I’ve been following Bruce now for almost 20 years. My line in the sand for traveling to shows has always been 3 hours. I decided to go to Knoxville knowing it would take almost 4 hours, but wanted to go knowing it would be special. It would be my third show in seven days. Chastain, Biltmore, and Knoxville in one week!

I’m bothered by some of the talk about accoustics at Knoxville and not ever coming to another Bruce show. Yes, the accoustics have been better elsewhere, but what a beautiful venue on the National Register. What a great setting with great people!

At the end of the day when the sun is setting and the cows are coming home, I don’t care what the acoustics are like. As long as Bruce is within 3 hours of where I am, come hell or high water, that’s where I’ll be. It’s not the acoustics that makes a great show. It’s the talent of a great songwriter and piano player that makes every show exciting and different that matters to me.

    The Show Goes On! :D

Hmmm, yes and no. The music is the main thing for me, but we ARE paying customers. If for whatever reason someone doesn’t think a concert experience was worth the price, they have every righ not to go back. I’d go see Bruce anywhere within my travel range but for an artist I’m on the fence about paying to see, I won’t go see them at a venue I don’t like the sound of.

If you think about it, outdoor concerts do not have good acustics! Why was Biltmore “show of the year” last year? Why does Bruce like Chastain so much? This was his 13th, yes 13th, show at Chastain!

The “bottom line” is this. A true fan, I mean a true fan, will support Bruce no matter where he plays!

Think about this….When Bruce books a show, he doesn’t book a show based on acustics. He loves to play! He really does!

Take a look at JV, JT, Bobby, Doug & Sonny. They love to play! You can tell that night after night no matter where they are. They want to please their fans! They want to have a good time while they give us a good time!

Like I said before, at the end of the day, while the sun is setting and the cows are coming home, their is no place I would rather be………

    Bruuuce!………….. :D

Sorry, but this is simply not true. Outdoor venues are far less likely to have problems with standing waves, and the resulting uneven bass response with some parts of the venue getting way too much bass and others getting far too little at certain frequencies.

What is a “true fan”? Who gets to decide on the definition?

Can’t say I’d go along with that sentiment, David, admirable as it may be.

I wouldn’t be tripping over myself to go to Oyster Bay any time soon, as the venue is pretty innaccessible (without a car) , the food/drink prices astronomical, and the staff are simply obnoxious.

I don’t have the discerning ear of, say, Will when it comes to sound quality, but there are factors that I need to consider when picking which shows I go to. Some may not persuade me, but that’s no reflection on the music, or my support of Bruce and the band!

What’s interesting to me is that all the positive comments have come from females, but all the negative comments have come from males. Maybe I’m showing my feminine, sentimental side here.

Don’t get me wrong, I love good acoustics at great venues. In fact, it was hard for me to travel to Knoxville. I get this bad taste in my mouth when I even think of Knoxville home of the Vols. (You can’t trust anyone that wears orange!)

I went knowing nothing about the acoustics, but knew the TN Theater was on the historic register and a beautiful venue. I went knowing that Si, Vic, Amanda and friends would be there. I went knowing that Bruce would put on a great performance. I went knowing it would be a great party and show. I went knowing that a great time would be had. I went hoping Bruce would play my request which he did! (Tango King) What a great time!

    Life is good! :D

    David!!!! I”m here!!!
It’s me, Miss Virginia Former!!!! I’ve been having a fight with the computer and this forum, and it’s taken me this long to log on!!!!

David, I was at the front of the line and the front of the stage at the Biltmo’. I was also the instigator of the fine, onstage dancing at Charlotte(yes, that WAS my bear!)

David, we must get together to discuss this terrible Hornsby fixation we both have.

Well, well, well! I can sleep better tonight! Miss Virginia Former! I was about to send a posse out after you. It’s great to finally hear from you again! This forum needs your flair and pithy remarks!

I think I saw you at Biltmore. Were you the one going around with contruction paper and pens asking people to write their request? If that was you, thanks! Bruce played my request that night! Pastures of Plenty
I’ve been trying to get him to play that on several occasions.

We do need to get together sometime and converse! You should have come to Knoxville! We had a blast! I couldn’t make Charlotte due to a commitment I’ve had since early this year. I would have come if I could. Charlotte is only 3 hours drive for me. Maybe next year!

    Please stay in touch! :D

Ooops! That wasn’t me! I was the red-head at the front of the line (where else??) with the Teddy Bear in the Bruuuce.com T-Shirt, trying to get band members to sign the bear’s shirt, drinking Biltomo’ wine out of a sippy-cup, and just being over-all obnoxious. Are you headed to any more shows in the line-up???? Oh, oh, oh, by the way, you missed the all-time best request played at the Charlotte show. About the third or fourth song of the show, Bruce started his spiel about how most of ya’ll probably don’t know what the h*** songs we’re playing up here so far….but we do take requests. I yelled out “Way It Is”, and he said “Yeah, like that”. Then I yelled “Freebird”. He laughed, and sang a few lines of “Way It Is” to the tune of “Freebird”. Don’t hear THAT at every concert!!!!

Miss Virginia Former! I saw you! I was in front of the line with you. I was the tall, dark, handsome one that’s too tall, too tan, too good looking with too much money! I’m just kidding, but Vic probably fits that’s description.

Speaking of Vic. Vic, where are you? You need to join in on this conversation! We need your journalistic skills and rhetoric! Vic is the real Mr. D.E. in the corner. I’m just the second string Mr. D.E. in the corner. Can anyone name that song?

Miss Virginia Former, I’m glad you’re back! I hope to make it to Spartanburg. I’m trying to make it work. Are you going to Spartanburg?

I really mean it when I say….”At the end of the day, when the sun is setting and the cows are coming home, there is no place that I would rather be!”

Sometimes I get a song in my head and just can’t seem to keep my mind off of it. I’ve been listening and thinking about Defenders of the Flag for the past several weeks. I guess all the hoopla about 9-11 is part of the reason I keep reflecting on it.

Defenders of the Flag came out in 1988. That’s 1988! I didn’t hear it in concert until early 2000. Does anyone know when Bruce first played that in concert?

Something to think about. Were the lyrics prophetic?

If these guys are the good ones
I don’t want to know the bad
    You wonder how it happened
They just picked it up from dad
Faded old glory hanging like a rag
    Defenders of the flag

What do all of you out there in Bruuuce land think? Was that prophetic? What other lyrics in Defenders of the Flag speaks to you?

What a great song and a better song in concert! Defenders, defenders of the flag!

Was the song prophetic? I don’t think that’s the case. I’ve always interpreted it as Bruce’s views about the sorry state of American politics and just plain old hypocrisy in general. But, I’ve been wrong many times before.

    Lyrics that speak to me:
The congregation’s waiting at the altar
They can’t find the preacher anywhere
They found him with the new girl from the choir
Where they store the boxes of the book of prayer

Around the time this record came out, I was coming to the realization (as many young adults do) that people in positions of leadership aren’t always what they seem. Defenders of the Flag expresses that perfectly. And I agree it IS an amazing song in concert. Thanks for giving me a brand new way to look at one of my favorite old songs.

    Hi Jackie!

I think you hit a bullseye! That’s exactly what I think it means also! What’s interesting is that when I received the notification of your post, I had just put on the download of Defenders. What timing!

By prophetic, think about this. The song was released in 1988 just before George Bush became president. Now that “W” is bogged down in Iraq….

If these guys are the good ones
I don’t want to know the bad
    You wonder how it happened
They just picked it up from dad

That’s what I mean by prophetic. What do you think now? What about you Bruce Nation! What do you think?

The lyrics that connect with you also connect with me. I’m a preacher’s kid. Yes, a PK! I can definetely connect there also!

Thanks for your response! Defenders, defenders of the flag!

I first heard this song in concert at William and Mary Hall in 1989, when it was Bruce and the Range…. he got a bunch of his “good ole’ boys” to come prancin’ out on the stage like politicians…..some musician I don’t know was dressed like a biker and played a mean harmonica solo on his knees in front of Bruce (on the accordian)…I have pictures of THAT…..Molo sat on the edge of the drum stage and picked out “The Star Spangled Banner” on the guitar at the tail end of the song…..it was a beautiful moment.

    Hi David!

OK, I see your point now. The era of “Bush the Elder” had completely slipped my mind. Though there have been relatives elected as president before (* John Adams and John Quincy Adams {father and son} *William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison {grandfather and grandson-I think}). Maybe we Americans like things in succession. Could it be because we were once ruled by a king and are unconsciously partial to the idea of a royal family?

Bruce as a modern-day prophet? Hmm, I may be coming around to the notion… :)

Miss Virginia Former: PLEASE post those pictures if you can! We’d love to see them!

    #29145

Well…….here’s the problem. I only have “hard copies” of the pictures. They are not digital, and I don’t have a way to put them on the computer. So……Mr. David Day, if I sent you copies of the pictures, would you have a way to put them online??? I feel like such a dinosaur, not being digital and all.

    #29146

Oh, and by the way, no, I was NOT in diapers in 1989, thank you very much. In fact, my SON was in kindergarten in 1989. 😯

    Hey, Treah….
I keep trying to send you a “”private message””, but it keeps saying that you are “ignoring” me. Was it something I said??????? Or can I not manipulate the computer as well as I thought????

It’s likely neither of these – Si can’t manipulate his own computer as well as he thought. There’s a problem with the “private messages” for now.

I understand that if you take your negatives to a Kodak place, they can put your pics on a disc. Then, you can either post them or e-mail them to me and I’ll make sure it happens! (Someone help me out here. Is that right?)

Miss Virginia Former! This is your mission for the Bruce Nation! We need to see those pics! I’ll do anything you want me to do to see them! I’ll even get down on my knees and beg! 😉
