And regarding the pictures, if you wanted to send them to me I could scan them and put them online. Give me a shout if you’d like!

Personally, I always thought he said “Mr. P.E. in the corner” — as in Mr. Phys. Ed. … referring to the “jock,” one of the stereotypical “cliques” of high school life.
But I guess it wasn’t P.E. after all, huh? Oh, well. “Defensive End” serves the same purpose, I suppose.
Anybody going to be at the Louisville solo show on Oct. 8?

ParticipantI think I remember either hearing an interview or reading something about Mr. D.E. I think Bruce said Mr. D.E. was what many people might refer to as the “shop teacher” (I think we called the class Industrial Arts at my high school). For the life of me, I can’t remember what D.E. actually stands for…
Miss Virginia Former, I promise,I’m not ignoring you. When I try to remove you from the Ignore list,I can’t seem to do it. I’ll keep trying.I don’t even remeber putting you on that list, maybe it was my evil twin!

You are the closest so far!
Last year, I posted this question on Bruce’s guestbook. I thought for years that Mr. D.E. would be Mr. Defensive End, but after I saw a post from Miss Virginia Former, it aroused my curiosity and I decided to ask Bruce that question. He did answer my question in his guestbook and it is not Mr. Defensive End. Jackie you are close! Check out Bruce’s archives of his guestbook for the answer.
Who is Mr. D.E. in the corner dancing with Miss Virginia Former?
Miss Virginia Former, I hope you know that your post about Biltmore last year actually started all this!

Keymaster“D.E.” is, I believe, “Distributive Education”.

ParticipantOkay, nobody panic here, but I can’t quite lay my hands on those pictures AT THE MOMENT…. I’m still looking. And I know I don’t have the negatives. But I DO know I snail-mailed copies of them to Si Twi over a year ago. I remember making a comment about George Marinelli’s “big hair”, and Si said I better be careful, because he was a good friend of George’s. Si……do YOU still have those copies????? and if so………POST THEM!!!!!!!!!
On another note…. anybody up for a road trip to Virginia the weekend of November 3, 4, 5??? Bruce will be playing solo shows in Richmond on one night, and in Norfolk on another. I will volunteer to be the “travel agent” for the gig….you know, seeing about group discounts for motel room(s), concert seating together, etc. Williamsburg is the halfway point between, and that’s Bruce’s turf. Who knows?? If we get enough of a group together, maybe he’ll meet us for lunch or something??????? I’m game!!!!

KeymasterI do have the photos (somewhere!) but, alas, no access to a scanner.
I think poor Bruce will be too busy with a solo tour and spending some precious time at home to be meeting a party of us for lunch! (I’ll just be missing the VA gigs, but I’m making it to New York again… any excuse!)

ParticipantYou are right, sir!!!
I remember hearing or reading about that and BRH said “D.E.” was distributive education– which is vocational education… at least in Pennsylvania. It’s lodged in my memory because that is my field.
Oh, I didn’t read far enough… someone asked Bruce to qualify?? Cool! I wish he’d respond to his guestbook with just a little more regularity…He reads the stuff, doesn’t he?

ParticipantI’ve been spending a lot of time in my car lately and this morning something happened that I wanted to share. I had just put on Scenes from the Southside and right when Look Out Any Window came on, the most beautiful sunrise happend across the hills of north Georgia. All the beautiful fall colors and all the pinks and lavenders of sunrise. I couldn’t help but think what a great sunrise song!
I know you think I’ve probably fallen off my rocker, but check it out! Does Look Out Any Window remind you of a sunrise? Let me know what you think!

ParticipantTry driving through the rolling hills of the Palouse in late summer just before the wheat is harvested with all the windows down in your ’68 Firebird and “Look Out Any Window” cranked up on the stereo. That, my friends, is almost paradise!
October 10, 2006 at 8:27 pm #26826Victor
ParticipantMy moment
Allisa, I see your “hills of the Palouse” and raise you the Walking Horse farms in the rolling pastureland of Middle Tennessee.
Not only did I get the fields and horse farms of Kentucky on my drive to Louisville this weekend, but I also ventured off the interstate to Bell Buckle, Tenn., a Mayberry-esque town if ever there was one! Wildflowers and corn-stalk decorations dotted the landscape under clear blue skies, and the scent of wood smoke filled the air.
Driving down those country roads to a soundtrack provided by Bruce was a perfect fall road trip — a great excuse to look out any window.

ParticipantI run four or five times a week and generally start in the morning while it is still dark. As I was running across the hills this morning I experienced another beautiful sunrise. There were deer and wild turkey everywhere. A mist hung over the pastures below the splendid fall colors of the trees.
As the sun began to rise, it hit me again. Look Out Any Window!
The song starts out slow and soft as if the sun is just waking up. Then it builds as if the sun is starting to rise. The song then hits full tempo and you have a full sun smiling down on you.
No, I wasn’t on any drugs, but maybe I should have been to help dull the pain of running. 😆
Check out the intro to Look Out Any Window. Doesn’t it seem like a sunrise?

ParticipantWell (deep subject), here I go again. Another road trip to see Bruuuce! Spartanburg will be my 51st (yes 51st) show! It will be my 5th show for this year! It’s been a good year!
First, there was the Atlanta “Solo” Show. I’m a telling ya! If you missed this, you missed something special! Then there were three shows in one week. Chastain Park, Biltmore (show of the year again?) and the grand Tennessee Theater in Knoxville home of the Vols. (You can’t trust anyone who wears orange!)
There were some great pre-show parties at Four Seasons Brewery and Horseradish Grill in Atlanta, on the veranda by the bar at the Biltmore Inn overlooking the valley & mountians and the Downtown Grill & Brewery in Knoxville.
There were many great “Bruce-heads” that needed to be met. My high school buddies David, Judy & Mike; Marc from Cincy, Vic from Chattanooga area (check out his pen pic & bio!), Amanda from MO, the infamous webmaster Si and friends and even running into Miss Virginia Former.
There’s been great moments as Bruce played my requests like Tango King and Pastures of Plenty. Talking to JV & JT before and after shows. E-mails with JV. Bruce answering my questions in his guestbook. Not to mention great shows!
I was reflecting on all of these things early this cold morning as I was running and I couldn’t help but ask myself, “Why do you do this?” You’re getting ready to go on another road trip you’re fifth this year! Why?
As I was running down that long, cold road this morning, it was the first time in a long time that I didn’t have an answer. I was really bothered by the fact that I didn’t know.
Then, as the early morning rays started beaming through the trees and I could feel the warmth of the sunrise, I got this peaceful feeling inside.
Bruuuce!

Participant‘Might as well face it ; You’re addicted… to Bruuuce!!!
And, boy howdy, I am feeling ya! My seventh and eighth road trips and BRH shows will be Richmond and Annapolis next week-end. It’s been a very good year, especially with the gifts of the boxed set, ‘I’m-a tellin’ ya.’
Please, enjoy the concerts for those of us who can’t get enough. Have a ball in the low country!!![Could I get any cornier?]Lola

ParticipantDavid,
It finally hit me this week…”Look Out Any Window” DOES remind me of a sunrise! I was on my daily commute to work riding the public transit mini-bus from the city where I live to the city where I work when it happened. The sun began to rise as I was listening to the aforementioned song and voila! A beautiful sunrise began. The pinks and purples were breath-taking. I started to smile and thought to myself, “So this is what David has been writing about!”
I suppose the time change also had something to do with this unexpected event; I’m usually inside loading vending machines when the sun rises. This past week I was given the opportunity to see it. That same day I was even inspired to get out and enjoy the sun and glorious fall colors.
Thanks for planting the seed…

ParticipantIt’s Thanksgiving here in the states. A time to reflect on the things (and stuff) we are thankful for.
I did live in Jamaica for five years and was not a ganga farmer as my pen pic suggests, but was on a “mission” to help the Jamaican’s meet their physical needs. I brought in construction teams, medical teams and dental teams. I was considered a Jamerican by the locals. Everyday I would wake up and be struck by the poverty all around me.
In the mornings, I would travel to a construction site or take doctors or dentists to a clinic “in the bush” as the Jamaicans would say. Every morning, without exception, I would put on Scenes from the Southside as I was driving my pickup down the country roads. As the sun was rising, there would be Look Out Any Widow to greet my day. It was my connection back to home. It was what helped me keep my sanity. It was what gave me comfort which I needed everyday.
I reflect back to those days and know how blessed I really am. I think back to those days and am thankful for the music of a Mr. Bruce Hornsby. Bruce was my crutch and was always there when I needed him. On this Thanksgiving, I give thanks for the music of Bruce Hornsby.

ParticipantVery nice, David. Very nice.
I, too, am thankful for Bruce’s music. I have just gone through the roughest patch yet in my life, and it was The Man’s music that got me through it. In fact, it took me playing every Hornsby-related CD I own, from The Way It Is to the entire boxed set, and everything in between, including the bootlegs (and I played the Charlotte show three times just to hear my name…thanks gunky
) just to get me back to semi-normal.
So again, thank you Bruce for your phenomenal music. You don’t realize it, and you will probably never even read this to know it, but you saved my life.

ParticipantNow that the “intersections” tour is over, it’s time to pull out “intersections” and check out a few things.
On the DVD song “The Mighty Quinn” with BB King, who is the guitar player center stage behind BB King? Where did he come from? What other instruments does he play?
You guys need to know this. This guy was my mentor on the guitar. In fact, I had a lesson from him in the late 70s.
Here are the questions again:
a. Who is he?
b. What group or groups has he played with?
c. What other instruments does he play?Bonus question:
What is his nick name?Very interesting!

ParticipantHi David!
I’ve watched the video of “The Mighty Quinn” at least two times, but I really never noticed the other players (shame on me!). The guitar player behind BB King is Jeff Baxter. He’s played with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. I don’t know what other instruments he plays, but I do know his nickname is “Skunk.”
You had a lesson with him? Seriously? I’m impressed! (and I’m not saying that sarcastically…). Really cool.

ParticipantDing, Ding, Ding! We have a winner!
Wow Jackie! I’m impressed! I thought that would be a hard one.
“Skunk” left Steely Dan with Michael McDonald to play with the Doobie Brothers. He also plays steel & petal guitar and saxaphone. Not too many guitar players that play sax.
I got to jam with Skunk while he was with the Doobie Brothers. They were filming a special for a TV station in a small studio. I had a pass to watch the taping. We played together for a couple of hours that day while they were setting up and in between breaks. I got to play with the full band during sound check. I said we “jammed”, but it was really more of him giving me a lesson. He was quite helpful and seemed to enjoy playing with me. A neat individual. What an experience for me!
Any idea how he got the name “Skunk”?

ParticipantQuote:Any idea how he got the name “Skunk”?According to Wikipedia:
Quote:Jeff (Skunk) Baxter (born December 13, 1948 in Washington, D.C.) is an American rock guitarist, and currently is an anti-terrorist consultant to the U.S. government. His career includes stints with Steely Dan and the transitional incarnation of the Doobie Brothers, as well as longtime session work for a diverse array of performers.Contrary to rumours that the nickname “Skunk” alludes to anti-social habits (his self-deprecating wit may cause some to mistake it for social reluctance), or that a band member hung it on him in a lefthanded tribute to his looks (unknown or unconfirmable), its actual origin is unknown. Baxter has been quoted as saying he has no intention of revealing just where it came from, or why.
Even odder than his nickname, IMHO, is the business about him being an anti-terrorist consultant…
