Baxter has been quoted as saying he has no intention of revealing just where it came from, or why.
Thanks Ellen_G! I thought you guys would find that interesting. That’s why I brought it up.
The truth is, no one really knows why his nickname is “Skunk”. Or do they? 😉

I knew that was going to be a tough one! It’s a good question and very interesting. There is a common thread between Bruce and “Skunk”. What do you think it is?

Tidings of comfort and joy to you! Ever since I heard about the making of the jazz record,I’ve been waiting anxiously for its release. I have a feeling we’ve only gotten just a taste of what Bruce can do with the “jazz language.”Jackie

Thanks Jackie! You just opened up a can of worms that needs some more Thoughts From A Road Scholar!
Stay tuned! But, before we can go any further, someone has got to connect the dots between “Skunk” and Bruce. It is all related!

ParticipantHere’s my best guess, although a feeble one at that:
Just like Bruce says he can pretend people are yelling “bruuuce!” instead of “booooo!”, maybe Jeff thinks they’re yelling “skuuuunk!” instead of “you suuuuuuck!” ????? (not that Mr. Baxter sucks – I’m sure he’s a very fine musician!) ;o)

And just to put my two cents’ worth in…. last summer when I had lunch with Mama Hornsby (no, go ahead, ask) she said that the next release was a bluegrass album with Ricky Skaggs.

KeymasterDavid –
I’m doing a bit of house-keeping here and I’ve moved your “year end” idea to the year end awards:

Bruce, “Skunk”, Steely Dan, Bruce’s new jazz recordLooks like I have to hold your hand on this one. I didn’t know that it would be that difficult. Let’s take one at a time.
In a previous post, Jackie knew that Skunk use to play with Steely Dan. Have you ever read anything about what Bruce says about Steely Dan?

Bruce majored in jazz at Miami.
How does Skunk and Steely Dan fit in all this?

KeymasterLong story with this topic – David, I’ve moved your most recent post into a new topic, which I’ve (jokingly) called “Stalking Bruce”
Link: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=860&p=4102#p4102
In doing so, I managed to delete ALL of David’s posts, so have been scrambling around ever since to recover them.
All done now – but please visit David’s topic as per the link above, and see if you can answer his great question!

Bruce, “Skunk”, Steely Dan, Bruce’s new jazz recordOK David,I give up! I’ve listened to the CD,poured over the liner notes and wracked my brain for obscure bits of Bruce trivia, but I can’t find the answer! Put me out of my misery, please! 😆

Long, long time ago. Way back when. I read several articles where Bruce said that he had been influenced by Steely Dan. Steely Dan being jazz/pop was in a class by themself. Very creative for their time.
Since Bruce majored in jazz, it was just a matter of time that he came out with a jazz record. Some of the songs on Camp Meeting definitely have a Steely Dan feel to them. Camp Meeting itself being one of them.
Did Steely Dan help influece Bruce to major in jazz that inevitably led Bruce to do Camp Meeting?

Hmmm…Great question! (preceded by some equally great Bruce quotes!) My best guess would be,”Yes.” Bruce often shows some of his “pop” influences-Leon and Elton-when playing,so it makes sense that the Steely Dan influence would apeear on the jazz album.
Ah,another reason to listen to this wonderful CD-trying to find more effects of Steely Dan on the music!

What do you think? What other songs sounds like Leon Russell?

Another Day
Look Out Any Window (some of the live versions)
Country Doctor
King Of The Hill
Preacher In The Ring I
Candy Mountain Run (style of singing)
King HarvestSpeaking of singing style, Bruce pays tribute to Leon Russell’s singing style throughout the A Night On The Town album. Am I correct or is this statement only wishful thinking?
