ParticipantWay back awhile, Si featured a book on his site called Till The Dreaming’s Done by Andy Harley. It’s a book of poetry that features at least one Bruce Hornsby phrase in each poem. The poetry’s pretty good, and it has been really fun reading through to try and find each of those sometimes elusive phrases. Here’s an example:
“It seems that when the day
Goes down on the water town,
And the friendly fishermen
Head back – back to dry ground.
That this is often the idle time,
When it really hurts the most?
When the one I love so deeply love,
Is just not anywhere close?”–exerpted from “Expressing Emptiness” by Andy Harley
Well, I have to admit, I’m stuck. There are two poems in which I can’t find the “Bruce” phrase. They are “Summer Solstice” on pg. 25, and “Starlit Darkness” on pg. 49. I don’t think copyright laws will let me print the entire poems here, or I would turn it into a contest. Does anyone have this book, and can you help me out???

Here’s the phrase from “Starlit Darkness” on pg. 49. The phrase is taken from Defenders Of The Flag and it’s in the last verse of the poem:
“Our galaxy surely is something of splendor,
The planets, part of God’s grand design;
Tonight see how those stars just seem to flicker,
Wow,can’t you see them shine?“
–excerpted from “Starlit Darkness” by Andy HarleyI’m still puzzling out the other poem…Hope this helps.

ParticipantHey, SIB,
Wow, how could I have missed THAT one!?!? Thanks. I was starting to go crazy.Hey, check out page 68. Funny, but from the notes I’ve made in the margins of MY copy, Andy didn’t use any lines from Big Swing Face – except this title. In fact, the “Bruce” phrase in this poem is from “Barren Ground”.
Andy, if you read this — I would LOVE to chat with you about your wonderful talent and obvious love of Bruce’s work.

ParticipantIf one of you would like to PM the other poem, I’ll gladly try to figure out the elusive line.

ParticipantThank you MVF and treah for PM’ing the poem.
After the first scan I thought the Bruce line was..
“Stepping out onto the front porch,”
..but then I realised I was thinking of a line from “The Road Not Taken” which mentions a front porch, but is different.
So I read it again and got it. The Bruce line is..
“I know that sometime soon (today).”
..from “Walk in the Sun”.

ParticipantThank you, thank you, thank you!!
You are a genius!!I have highlighted the “Bruce” phrase in each of the 62 poems in Andy Harley’s book. It’s kinda fun to flip through and read just those snippets. For each one, just the phrase brings back the entire song. The subtitle of the book is “Poems Crafted For Thinking People”. I think it should be “Poems For Bruuuce.comPlete Fanatics”!! 😆

ParticipantI sent an email to the address on the back of the book, and, lo and behold, I received a delightful reply back. Andy Harley and I had quite a little chat through email about his poetry. He is an insightful poet, and, boy, does he know Hornsby music!.
Andy was curious as to how many people had purchased his book Till The Dreaming’s Done through Bruuuce.com. Let me know if you have, and I’ll pass that info on.

ParticipantUmmm…I sort of bought it. I requested it from my library, even though it wasn’t in their catalog, and a couple weeks later they called and said it was in. I love my library! So I guess I bought it vicariously – does that count?

ParticipantYes, because SOMEBODY ordered it on your behalf. I’ll let Andy know!
