ParticipantAlways interesting to hear what else Hornsby fans have in their music collections, especially recent additions and new material worth checking out. I have to admit that I’ve been in a real rut lately as far as new stuff so I don’t have a very interesting list: right now I’ve got Mark Knopfler’s Shangri-La album (which isn’t exactly new) in rotation along with a couple Runrig (an alt Celtic-rock band) CDs which are even less new.

ParticipantOther music in my cd player…
There’s a great CD I just bought, “Until We Meet Again” by Kevin Moyles (http://www.kevinmoyles.com) that has an amazing cover of the Steve Goodman song, California Promises. I found the song on Itunes and bought the album directly from the artist, as I’m all about the indie artist support. I also bought Stephen Bishop’s (http://www.stephenbishop.com) Demo Album 1, which I’ve been enjoying. However, the best thing I’ve been listening to is a box set I bought from http://www.hiposelect.com, called Cast of Characters: The Complete Rupert Holmes Songbook. I’ve been a HUGE Rupert fan since my early teens and to have all his studio stuff on CD is amazing. So, I have somewhat eclectic tastes, but these are all great, great albums.

KeymasterBoth Josh Dodes CDs, who many will know from this site’s features in the past (and if not, I urge you to check him out – http://www.joshdodes.com)
Also Counting Crows, who I’d recommend live to anyone (Adam Duritz is great – he has a cooresponding “action” for about every line of every song).

Here is my list, some records are new, some are old standbys: Fair and Square (John Prine), Mercy Now (Mary Gauthier), Lightnin’ Hopkins in New York, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons (Lorin Mazel, et al) American IV: The Man Comes Around (Johnny Cash) Mercury Falling (Sting). I enjoy listening to the two versions of “I Hung My Head” from the Sting and Johnny Cash CDs back to back.
I’m always looking for interesting music, I’ll try to check out some of the CDs you guys have mentioned.
Thanks!

ParticipantTo be honest, Hornsby’s c.d’s have been in constant rotation in my c.d player for at lest a month!!! Although I have played the hell out of Rodney Crowell’s “Fate’s Right Hand” and his latest “The Outsider”. For any one who doesn’t know Rodney’s style; he was once Nashville’s leading balladeer in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Without rambling on, he is what I like to call a Cowboy Poet….just a great artist (all around!!! ) also played the hell out of Peter Frampton’s latest “Now”. This c.d his his best ever!!!!!!!!!! Best song off it is a six minute guitar solo track called “Greens”.
Even though I’m 20 I really don’t like any one who is out now on the charts…hell to be perfectly honest with you all, I don’t even know who is on the charts! Although I have been a fateful subscriber to Rollingstone mag. For years, I rarely open the dam thing…wow I am one strange person!!!March 3, 2006 at 2:21 am #26231David Day

ParticipantOK from memory the CDs I have in my car. (incidentally they all are now scratched so the last 2 or 3 songs won’t play – wish I’d known about that before putting my original cds in the car)
Bruce Hornsby- Halcyon Days, Scenes from the southside, erm – the one with a black CD that looks like a vinyl record.
The Sex Slaves From Hell – absolutely fantastic Cornish folk-punk band, well worth looking up
Genesis 3 disc box set – doesn’t get much playtime.
Pat Orchard – another local guy who’s very good.
Dave Rich Band – Overload – of course
Josh Dodes – this CD drives me nuts, this bloke could be huge if only he found a great guitar player to work with – I find the CD quite sterile, mainly because it’s all keyboard/electronic sounds – it definately needs some human hitting/plucking going on. Great voice/songs though.
Edie Brickell – Shooting rubber bands at the stars – the ONLY person i’ve ever heard who sings out of tune and it sounds right.
Bob Marley – best of – for chillin.
ACDC- Back in Black – for the obligatory headbanging whilst driving sessions.
Denise Marie – all 3 cds, a great singer/songwriter I saw in Tavistock. She really is very good- the latest CD is the best, the others are OK, but sound a little in-experienced. “Who would Jesus Bomb?” is one of my favourite tracks.
Prince 2131- or is it 3121? – I like prince, always have done. He’s a little mad-scientist/genius guy in my opinion. I can’t wait til he gets out of trying to be a dance/funk artist and goes a little more jazzy. I’m sure he’s gonna produce some incredible stuff when he’s older.
Dave Gilmour – can’t remember the name of it, bores me to tears so don’t really play it. I should remember this as a “road rage” throwing cd when I need one.
Most of the rest is local bands/artists – I really do try to support these guys as much as I can and have bought some really great music from Indy artists this year.
Kind regards
Dave Rich
