Thanks for spurring my memory,Rich.Jackie, you really should check out what Loudon Wainwright III has been up to recently. He’s definitely come a long way from Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road. He may be the best of a very good lot of folks plying the acoustic singer-songwriter trade.
The Good Ship Venus tune is from a 2006 CD called Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys. A number of people had a shot at some of the nearly 50 traditional (and rather bawdy) tunes on the 2-CD set. Lots of good fun, as long as you’re not either very prim and proper or near little kids who might ask questions.
I found that while trying to get my head inthe right place for the Blackbeard Festival that is going to be in Hampton in a few weeks. A few years ago, I learned form one of the late night balladeers at that festival that there were far more verses to Barnacle Bill The Sailor than I had every imagined possible. Aaarrrrrrrgh! Gotta let your inner pirate out!

ParticipantThat is a very unique “randomize” playlist. It seems just as strange, obscure, and ‘out there’ as everyone elses. So kudos to you!

ParticipantSomeone mentioned Yes. I’ve been rediscovering a lot of the Yes catalog again lately. So many of their albums have made their way into my players including “The Yes Album” “Drama” and “90125.” I happen to like Yes from all their various eras and lineups. Many of their CDs (albums) have been remasterd and sound better than ever.
Also in my home CD player now is:
“Buena Vista Social Club”
“Kenny Burrell At The Five Spot Cafe”
Mozart Violin Concierto #2 and #4
Rush “Snakes & Arrows”October 15, 2008 at 1:59 am #26247David Day
ParticipantSeveral months ago I ran across Marc Cohn on XM Cafe. It was interesting to me that over several months a song would come and I would go have to see, “who is that”? There was a common demoniatior…..It was Marc Cohn. Interesting enough, after several months, I finally went to Amazon to order one of his CDs. When I ordered his “Very Best”, I couldn’t help but check out “what other artist are others ordering that bought this”. There was Bruce in the #2 slot!
Has anyone else heard of this guy? Do you like him? Am I “off my rocker”? Like daverich he plays piano and guitar. No two hand independence, but still very good!
Very nice!
Check it out! I think you will like him!
Let me know what you think!

ParticipantQuote:It was Marc CohnHis self-titled album had considerable radio play circa ’92. I saw him listed on a concert bill last year (I think) opening for Suzanne Vega. Seems like he has some stylistic similarities to Bruce. I’m not that familiar with his lesser known stuff that didn’t get play.

ParticipantI haven’t heard a lot of Marc Coh’s music, but what I’ve heard,I’ve liked. When his latest album was released, several negative reviews were written by music “experts”-I didn’t agree with them.
“Listening To Levon” and “Living Out The String” are two memorable new songs of Mr. Cohn’s I’ve had the pleasure of hearing.
My favorite lines from his hit “Walking In Memphis”:
Now Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would —
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
And she said —
“Tell me are you a Christian child?”
And I said “Ma’am I am tonight”Jackie

And I said “Ma’am I am tonight”I understand he won a Grammy for that song and like Bruce, “Best New Artist of the Year” for whatever year that was.
Sorta like Bruce and The Way it Is.
“Burning in the Daze” is great, but check out “The Very Best of Marc Cohn”! My favorites are Turn On Your Radio, The Rainy Season, Paper Walls, Olana, but check out Lost You In The Canyon!
It has sorta of a Pink Floyd type of intro.
(Rich would love that!
)
Check it out! There are some similarities between Bruce and Marc!
Marc loves to do ballads if you like that about Bruce!
Let me know what you think! Am I “off my rocker”? 😆 I think you will like it!

ParticipantMy favorite song of his is “Silver Thunderbird” from his first album. It’s a very touching little paean to his dad’s favorite car. Great hook for the refrain:
-
[list:73720]Don’t gimme no Buick
Son, you must take my word
If there’s a God in heaven,
He’s got a Silver Thunderbird,
You can keep your Eldorados,
and the foreign car’s absurd.
Me I wanna go down
in a Silver Thunderbird[/list:u:73720]

ParticipantThanks to my wife remembering my birthday, I added a couple of new CDs to the rotation. If you haven’t heard the new Coldplay CD, Viva La Vida, yet… do. I love Coldplay’s sound anyhow, but the added touch of Brian Eno doing his thing as producer makes it all the better. The other newbie in the rotation is James Taylor’s Covers CD. I’m really digging his versions of “Summertime Blues” and Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away”, but I think the gem on this one is his rendition of “Wichita Lineman“. That song is perfect for his voice.

ParticipantOh yeah,I forgot about “Silver Thunderbird”! It contains my favorite example of Marc Cohn’s piano skills.
I heard a radio show a couple of days ago where James Taylor sang “Wichita Lineman.” When he sang: And I need you more than want you/And I want you for all time.-it really emphasized the complex nature of the relationship in the song.
This new release is definitely going on my wish list.

ParticipantRe: Other music
Rochelle wrote:I just purchased the Pretty in Pink cd actually I had it in record form in 1986-I know it sounds corny but there are a lot of great musicians on that cd- The Psychedelic Furs, OMD, Echo and the Bunnyman and Suzanne Vega with Joe Jackson-OH the Eighties!! RochelleThat movie had a great soundtrack to it! In an era where movie soundtrack albums were chock full of hits, that one was one of the fullest with great songs. I think that’s when I first got turned on to Orchestral Maneuvres in the Dark.

ParticipantI’m listening to the “newest” Chicago CD, Stone Of Sysyphus. Pretty good stuff. I still miss Terry Kath’s guitar on their albums, but I guess I need to get over that, since he’s been gone since 1978 or so.
