I have to say I think 2004 is my favorite overall year of Bruce. I think the Noisemakers played some of their tightest shows during this year, with some of the best set-lists. A really good mix of Hot House, Spirit Trail, Big Swing Face, and debuting Halcyon Days. The Three Nights on the Town DVD was made in October of this year too. I’m just listening to the Cary, NC show from August of 2004. What an awesome show. A lot of the Live Noise Bruce has released from 2004 reinforces this as well.
Of course there are so many other years and eras that come to mind, but just from hearing a good amount of recordings from 2004, it’s really top notch.
Wouldn’t disagree with that, although the newest additions to the band offer much hope for this summer.
I think a lot depends on the quality of the recordings… and for that reason I’d suggest 1993 also. Some great soundboard recordings from that year.
Mine is 2001/2002.
The set lists were great and the band was on fire, especially when Steve Kimock or RS was involved. Check out 10/1-2/02 if u can find a copy without chatter.
Many songs were jammed out long and many of my favorite songs were played during this time that are now gathering dust on the shelf.I agree with both of your choices too.
1993 was a tight band with Jimmy Haslip…I just never cared for Debbie Henry’s belting out notes, just didn’t fit the tunes.
2004 was great because of all the great Halcyon Tunes and it was awesome to have RS in the band at many shows from ’04. Love his guitar tone. Glad there is a lot of nice recordings out there to be able to hear him add such a nice texture to the tunes.
I also what to show some love for the Range as I love 1988…it’s great to go back and hear early Bruce. I love the poppy sound of the Range…just wish there were more live Range recordings out there to hear some young vibrant Bruce jamming the classics.Lately really enjoy 1988-1998 (Minus Debbie H). I know a big stretch…but some spectacular recordings in that stretch.
Lots of good ones. 1993-96 probably features the largest variety of high-quality recordings, and Bruce was really beginning to find his sound – expanding from the very tight Range days to a free-form jazz sound. The shows had a real sense of fun to them.
The entire Noisemakers era after Doug/Sonny/JV joined the band is just unreal good. 2004 was a solid year. 2009 is always a highlight (and Bruce released a LOT of that year with the four Dagle’s Choice releases and several free BHLive downloads).
