ParticipantBruce, Ricky, and KT at the Ferguson Center Newport News, VA
Finally here it is! Well I will try the best that I can to give you a review of yet another amazing performance of Bruce, Ricky and Kentucky Thunder! Please keep in mind that I was busy working (videotaping some of the performance for a monthly show that I do for the City of Newport News Government Channel and also I wasn’t familiar with some of the traditional kick ass bluegrass songs but here goes nothing! October 19, 2007 The Ferguson Center for the Arts on the campus of Christopher Newport University, a beautiful performing arts cener that opened up in 2005 and it very intimate and performers and artists have claimed that it has some of the best acoustics in the country comparing it to Carnegie Hall in NY! Well Bruce and Ricky have performed here before individually, but this is the first time they have been back together, and what a show they put on for this sold out show! I of course was there to shoot the first 3 songs w/ Bruce and Ricky’s permission of course and what a show they put on, they started promptly at 8PM and played well after 10PM giving the crowd a show that they will never forget, I could not believe how fast these guys could play and of course how impressive they were once again! NOW the show of course was not like the JAMESTOWN 2007 show that I wrote about earlier this year because of the party atmosphere, the location and of course the reason being there to celebrate and commemorate the first permanent English Settlement at Jamestown, but I will tell you that these guys are having the time of their lives and giving the crowd wanting more! Andy Leftwitch was indeed the talk of the crowd, as well as other members . . .The Setlist (give or take a few that I didn’t know (with Question Marks) were Bluegrass tunes, and I may have missed one or two as I was locking up my camera gear, but hear goes-
1) ?? Instrumental Bluegrass
2) ??
3) Midnight Train
4) The Way It Is
5) Mandolin Rain
6) Across the Rocky Mountains
7) Dreaded Spoon
Sheep Shell Corn
9) Come On Out
10) White Wheeled Limousine/Long Black Veil
11) Fiddlemaker????
12) Sally Jo
13) ??Ralph Stanley tune
14) Darlin Corey
15) Uncle Pen
16) Valley Road
17) Super Freak
18) Crown of Jewel (quick few lines with Ricky, because Ricky forgot some of the words)
19)Pig in a Pen (MY REQUEST- I glued a plastic Pig in a Pen, and really got Ricky and Bruce’s attention- Bruce gave me a shout out! Pretty cool!)
20) Blacked Eye SuzieWhat a show! Unbelievable! After the show I got to see Bruce and he told me that my request was hilarious and even personally introduced me to Ricky! What a guy!
And if your asking about the video that was featured in my montly show, unfortunately the City of Newport News doesn’t stream video so you can’t see it! (You can buy copies from the City of Newport News Video Production Deparment though- Newport News City Channel 48) The story is about 3 minutes and the focus of the piece is really on the Ferguson Center with Bruce and Ricky added in! The show and the 15 or so stories are up to me, but I have to focus on the City Govt side of things and the city is a contributor to the Center! Another note- I did a story when this Center first opened, pretty much just empty seats and just to show the place off, well it has taken me almost 2 years to get in to videotape an actual performance! The Ferguson Center always said yes, but the performers always said NO! So when I heard Bruce was coming I put my request in early and of course he said SURE, so that it is pretty much the story! So take this for what its worth, and if Bruce, Ricky and KT come to your town, or close by- definitely don’t miss out on this incredible experience to see the two masters and mesmerizing bluegrass band like Kentucky Thunder at work- you will not believe your eyes or your ears!

Well I will see what I can do on my end, but I will tell you that the local listings that I have checked out online say this program is only an hour long so I am assuming that this is probably a collection of performances from different artists that were apart of this three day event! I am pretty sure that they of course aren’t just showcasing Bruce in this hour special!? I will keep you informed and see what I can find out!
Sincerely,

ParticipantJamestown 2007 Report
A Party Like No Other- Jamestown, Virginia- May 12, 2007/Anniversary Park/
America’s 400th AnniversaryWhat a time to have a party! 400 years in the making! Virginia commemorates the 400th Anniversary of America and the beginning of a whole new world on the banks of the mighty James River. May 11-13th marked 3 big days for locals and visitors from around the world as tens of thousands of people flocked to Jamestown, Virginia to mark this important time in our nation’s history.
For all you out there a quick history lesson- 104 Colonists set sail from England in January of 1607, with the likes of Captain John Smith and Captain Christopher Newport (who led the Susan Constant, Discover, and Godspeed) in search of gold and wealth which brought them across the Atlantic and landing at Virginia Beach, from there they went up to Hampton, Newport News, and eventually found there way to Jamestown Island on May 13, 1607. Of course once there, they struggled to survive, but set up the Virginia Colony and ultimately helped to spark the birth of our nation.
This Anniversary has been in the planning stages for more than 5 years and took quite a lot of efforts from the state, federal, and local governments to pull off. Historic Jamestown and Jamestown Settlement were the site of this humongous celebration which brought the Queen of England to town, President George Bush, community groups and performers from all over the state of Virginia, and yes Virginia’s own Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers, Ricky Skaggs
and Kentucky Thunder, and Chaka Khan!A quick note- A lot has been riding on this Anniversary because of the number of resources and money being thrown into this as well as a lot of people not having faith in pulling something like this off- Things have changed a lot since the 350th Anniversary in 1957. Also a lot people were upset initially because the Jamestown 2007 organizers failed to release the name of their nationally known music performers and even when they did, a lot people were disappointed with the naming of Bruce which lit a few fires among the Bruce community. But The Show Goes On!
And what a show He and his friends put on! Saturday, May 12, 2007 focused on 400 minutes of music which featured many local musical groups, choirs, performers, etc and the nightcap finale was of course Bruce! This event was outside and in a section of the grounds called Anniversary Park which used to be an old campground. The weather was overcast in the morning, beautiful midday and the evening wore on so to did the rain, but luckily it didn’t last for long as the show started right around 6:30 and from their this Anniversary got kicked into high gear!
From The Star-Spangled Banner to White Wheeled Limousine with Andy Leftwitch on violin from Kentucky Thunder (This guy is a rare breed and simply amazing to watch) this show was off to a great start! Bruce and the Noisemakers jammed the first set and were definitely having a ball- other songs included Big Rock Candy Mountain>Candy Mountain Run and of course the only request of the night which came from yours truly- King of the Hill>Twelve Tone Blues>Mystery Train! Simply Incredible!
The next set saw the Noisemakers exit and now with Bruce were Ricky and Kentucky Thunder- and they hit the ground running with Dreaded Spoon, Uncle Pen, Sheep Shell Corn, and ended with Sally Joe! They kept teasing that they should make a Bluegrass album sometime!
The next set saw Bruce take a much need break and the exit of KY, so Ricky brought his son Luke, recently graduated daughter Molly on stage for her song “If My People.” Ricky then introduced his wife Sharon White Skaggs for a beautiful “The Old Rugged Cross.” And even though Ricky may have given his own account of why the colonists came over (religious freedom) it was actually to get rich, the first stop was Virginia Beach where they erected a cross in the name of God! Anyway that set closed and the next set was amazing!
Bruce, the Noisemakers, and Chaka Khan- simply jamming- from an old
Nightingale’s song called “The Meeting” to a “Love Me Still” Duet, to the
jamming “Tell Me Something Good” and Chaka’s famous song “I Feel For You” which had Bruce and the Noisemakers reading the opening verses from paper- “Chaka Khan let me love you, let me rock you, let me feel you too.” what a great showcase of a music melting pot where music has no boundaries and artists can simply jam and have fun!The final set saw Bruce, the Noisemakers, Ricky and KT return for a Bluegrass version of Valley Road and then Bruce invited Governor Tim Kaine on stage to jam with them on Jacob’s Ladder>Pig in a Pen>Cartoons and Candy>Jacob’s Ladder- How incredible! The final song was The Way It Is and a perfect ender to a perfect night!
Bruce and the gang played an incredible 3 hour show and had the crowd on its feet, dancing and just totally jamming! I can guarantee for all of those who questioned why they brought Bruce into town for the 400th Anniversary, they definitely know now! This is not the Bruce from twenty years ago! This concert was intense, tight and had you begging for more! They did tape the performance for the Big Screen TV’s and hopefully we can see this in the future from Bruce, the Jamestown 2007 people or hopefully MunchMusic! Who knows!
This show in my opinion was the best concert I have seen in my entire life and for a $30 dollar ticket for a show like this- what a deal! I missed the Big Millennium Bash in Williamsburg in 2000 and always regretted it, but now since I got to attend this show on Bruce’s home turf , a hop, skip and jump from Williamsburg, right on the James River, and near the Surry Nuclear Power Plant (Hot House Ball origin)- what an incredible night! Thank you Bruce once again for a very memorable night, for inviting you talented friends and supplying us with the best music around!
Happy 400th!

Allisa-
That is all I know for now- The Richmond Times Dispatch and the Virginian Pilot does offer pictures for sale from their staff- I looked at a few but all the really cool ones are not for sale, and I am not sure if you knew they did video tape the entire show- now I am not sure if the final product will be from Bruce or just snipets from the Jamestown 2007 folks, but it was taped.

ParticipantWe sure did miss you!
Sorry to hear that you couldn’t come! The traffic and planning was as smooth as butter! The shuttle buses and the satelite parking lots were well planned out! And at $30 a ticket per day, the Bruce show with all his friends was a still and in my opinion the best concert that I have ever been to! Check out the setlist on the Current Tour Forum, I also have sent some pictures to Si for posting at a later date, also The Richmond Times Dispatch as an audio clip of the firs few songs! We sure did miss you!
