ParticipantI really loved the Keith Jarrett song. That really stands out. Also classic songs from Bud Powell and Miles Davis.
His original songs are less so, I think, in some instances. The ideas presented here sound very familiar to some live work from “Jacob’s Ladder” and from the intro to “Gonna Be Some Changes Made”. But they sound awesome nonetheless!
I’d love one day to see Bruce do some totally improvised live performances. This jazz trio seriously needs to add some more tour dates to their schedule. I can’t afford to go to the Newport Jazz Fest–although it would be well worth the money considering the line-up.

ParticipantAbout the popularity–maybe so.
Generally this type of jazz is played in a more intimate setting, anyways, hence less people. Have you guys been to Birdland or Village Vanguard? Two of the most legendary places for Jazz and they’re not very large. When everybody is there for the show, you feel like you are in somebody’s basement.

ParticipantI wonder what the cool kids in school listen to now?

Participantyes, good point–jam artists (knowledegeable ones, at least) would almost certainly have been influenced by jazz musicians
but I wouldn’t lump those two together, not for one moment. it’s something very different, and I think Bruce has eluded to this to some extent from the press release.

ParticipantI think Bruce is more of a jam artist than jazz artist.
My musical interests have been primarily jazz, but have always been a Hornsby fan. The fact that he has DeJohnette and McBride on this record is amazing!–You don’t get that kind of support usually when you do your first jazz record. I guess when you’re Bruce and you know as many musicians as he does, you can pull that sort of thing off.
As I expected, there will be a lot of standards on here. I hope Bruce can lend his unique signature to these songs, because a lot of times you don’t always get that with standards.
I wish Bruce would do a series of completely improvised solo piano shows running along the lines of Keith Jarrett.
And for the love of God, we need more tour dates with this trio! This is unacceptable!

ParticipantHornsby/Skaggs CD
I just got the CD today in the mail from CMT, which I ordered a couple of weeks ago to take advantage of the autographed copy deal.
My first impressions so far…
Mandolin Rain is superb. For those who’ve heard Bruce play it at Biltmore lately, it follows those versions. I have no other words to convey it other than it is truly a religious experience! I think this is the definitive Mandolin!!
A Night On the Town, Crown of Jewels and Super Freak are all great. I LOVE Super Freak! What a great rendition. Gulf of Mexico Fishing Boat Blues I also immediately liked.
You just can’t go wrong here. I think this album definitely needed to be made and I can see why Bruce has been wanting to do a bluegrass record for so long! No doubt this CD will be playing on my Bose for weeks to come. If the grammy rumors are true, I think Hornsby and Skaggs are definitely in need of this honor. What a great combination of musical talent!
What does everybody else think?
