Participantfunny you should bring up these lyrics. With a 9 year old son now in Cub Scouts I’ve wondered the same thing.
I anxiously await David’s explaination.

Participanton the “Goin’ Down the Road” Skaggs added a verse, I’m sure from the old traditional song.
can’t remember exactly how it went, something like
“I’d rather drink muddy water, sleep in a hollow log”
and some other “feed me on cornbread and beans” lyric. I’d never heard them before.and yeah, the White Wheeled with Bela was nothing short of incredible.
I went to that taping with my now ex-wife and her brother and some friends. We VHS taped the show when it aired. May be super long shot but I”ll see if I can find it. If so, if anyone can tranfer VHS to disc I’ll gladly send it to them.

Participantmine would have to be the one with Ricky Skaggs,Vince Gill, and Bela Fleck at the Ryman. I was also fortunate enough to be at that tv taping and it was PHENOMENAL. I’d love to get my hands on that show. They did Valley Road, Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad, White Wheeled LImosine and Mandolin Rain if I’m not mistaken.

ParticipantI really think Vince was only starting to “come into his own” the last two years of Grateful Dead. ’94 and ’95. I never cared much for some of his backup vocals or “Way To Go Home” but “Samba In The Rain” wasn’t bad. I also think Vince was responsible for the Dead playing some of the more psychedelic cover stuff the band did from ’93 on. Like the Beatles “Rain”,”Lucy In The Sky”, “All Too Much”, “Baba O’Riley/Tommorow Never Knows”. I honestly think Vince added alot more to those final years than he got credit for and that was because everybody wanted to focus on how bad Jerry and the scene had gotten.
But I could definately understand him feeling uncomfortable with Bruce being there, hell, I would be too. Bruce was obviously my favorite keyboardist for the Dead but I also always thought that he was almost too big of a “power hitter” to play with them. Bruce is a “frontman” and Jerry was the “frontman” for the Grateful Dead.Overall, I was cool with Vince.

ParticipantI wanted to give thanks for this as well. I can’t get it out of my player and I’m sending out five copies to share with some folks from another message board. I’ve already had one person ask if there was a studio album and he’s gonna grab a copy.

ParticipantNo Victor, it’s not just you, prices are very steep. Even the so called “lower tier” hotels are only a little bit cheaper than the Broyhill. I think it may have something to do with the season. I have like 18000 in Choice Hotel points and wanted to use them for one night but but they have differing rates. From now till May 15th they only wanted 12,000 points but from May 15th to Sept. 15th they jack it up to 20,000 points. I’m thinking about just one night at the Broyhill.
I was also bummed about the Noisemakers not being there, I REALLY wanted it to be a full blown show. But I’ve never seen a solo show so I won’t complain. Makes me wish I’d gotten floor seats now cuz there probably won’t be any dancing at a solo show…even in the balcony.

Participantwent ahead and got my tix today too. I don’t know if it’s a misprint or what but on Bruce’s site it says tickets are $48 but I got mine for $18. I got balcony seats in case I have to dance.

Victor wrote:I enjoyed the show; it was interesting to see how they cut it together with the pre-recorded interviews. Bruce and Ricky have great chemistry.I’ll have to go back and look at it again, but there was one song in particular that I remember Bruce wasn’t happy with for some reason at the taping (sounded good to me!). And as you’re watching the show on TV, as the song ends, the camera pulls back to an empty audience. Did they not use ANY of the versions recorded with the audience and opt for a version they performed in rehearsals?
I’m thinking the song was “Valley Road,” but I’m not sure. They tried that, Super Freak, and another song or two twice during the audience taping because they had problems or weren’t happy with what they were hearing for whatever reason.
I was at the tv taping as well and I believe the song you’re thinking of was Mandolin Rain. I too was waiting on the applause at the end of the tv broadcast but instead it was just Skaggs saying “that’s beautiful, just beautiful”. I’m getting chills just thinking about it. Thank God for DVR.

ParticipantI hate to post an entire song but, sorry.
And I’d like the entire universe to know that if I were to ever meet an untimely demise I’d want Swan Song played at my funeral.
This is no fond farewell
You can be sure I could wish it was no farewell at all
It’s been a good long run
Oh to be sure I don’t regret much
Not much at all
I’m gonna dance the night away
Gonna do what I want to any old day
And all at once I know the clouds are gonna clear for meAnd I will do alright
Well in truth, I might
I may be stumbling round on some cold night
I will miss the times when we were so right
Although it seems so long ago, so long
This is my swan song, I’m gone, goneThis is no sorrowful day
You can be sure I’ve got no axe to grind at all
It’s circumstance or burn out
You can be sure I’ve been grinding
Till I’m grinding to a halt
Sometimes it’s the right thing to cut the cord
You’ve been holding on hard but your hands get sore
Sometimes it’s worth it, but sometimes you wonder what forAnd I will do alright
Well in truth, I might
I may be stumbling round on some cold night
I will miss the times when we were so right
Although it seems so long ago, so long
This is my swan song, I’m gone, goneAnd I will do alright
Well in truth, I might
I may be stumbling round in some dim light
I will miss the times when it was so rightAlthouhg it seems so long ago, so long
This is my swan song, I’m gone, goneDoes anyone know the background for this song?

ParticipantI may have to grab this one. The Grateful Dead is how I got turned on to Bruce.
God I miss Jerry singing Good Times.
“It might be six o’clock and it might be eight
It don’t matter that it’s getting late
We’re gonna make the band play one more song
Get in the groove if it takes all night long”gives me chills

Lake Lanier, GAnope. That’s a P not a V. It’s a Widespread Panic hat. That picture was taken at the 2004 Dead shows at Red Rocks. I bought a new Jerry hat that day and left that WP hat on the antennae of our car. When we got out of the show it was gone, donated to the community.
Thanks for the comment about my avatar. I hope to someday grow my hair out long like yours. 😉

ParticipantI’d like to personally thank whoever was behind this contest. I was fortunate enough to get to see this taping as well. Thanks to JimS. being the fifth and final email to make the cut. What an incredible treat!!

I agree with Dave B’s last post. I would sit in my seat at a solo show……and…..probably try and hold back a few tears myself, Bruce’s music touches me that much.
I just don’t like it when people have issues with folks dancing at “noisemaker” shows. I wish more people would stand up and dance. I live in Nashville Tn and Bruce comes to the Ryman Auditorium occasionlly (Bruce if you’re reading…….come back please!!! we got skipped the last tour) and most of the crowd at the Ryman choose to sit the entire show. I just can’t do it. Next time I won’t buy lower level tickets and will opt for the balcony so I can dance.

I didn’t care when she was over by the wall, but if I had been over there it would have distracted me.
When she started dancing right in front of the stage she was in my line of sight and it was distracting.
It’s a piano performance, if you don’t know how to behave you shouldn’t be there. Just like a Bela Fleck & The Flecktones show.so would you feel differently if this had been a show with the Noisemakers?
