Dave RichSonny is not doing the drums. What’s interesting to me is that Sonny, like Bruce, majored in jazz in college. That maybe a little known fact and a good trivia question. I thought Sonny & JV would be the natural selection. 😮

Lake Lanier, GAya know I’m not sure i like this idea of people going to school to learn music. I learn 100x more jamming with people.
but yeah, sonny would’ve been a perfect choice. ah well – it’ll be interesting nonetheless.

Participantwe did a show last night in Cornwall and afterwards the manager of the venue said “ya know, you guys sound just like Nick Hornby – with that piano and all that”
He did mean bruce and the compliment was well received.

I don’t really expect him to. I don’t think anyone who participated in “Shadowhands” heard from him either.
oh he called us, said something about how dare we do that to his baby or somesuch.
(or was that a dream)

Participantbabytweety2yo wrote:I did phrase the initial question wrong at the time I wasn’t thinking correctly how to phrase it. After reading Si and Meagans posts I see how they have something in common with Bruce that would make it possible to meet him, but my new question would be how would that be possible for just an ordinary person that wouldn’t have those things in common?
If that makes sense at all?slightly off-topic but our drummer went to see the dave matthews band at wembley arena here in england last week. He hung around afterwards and to his joy a few of the band members came over after the show and hung out chatting for about half an hour to the die-hard fans who were waiting to catch a glimpse.
My drummer was ecstatic ‘cos he met his hero (Carter) and even took off his t-shirt he was wearing to give to him – so who knows maybe Carter will be wearing a dave rich band t-shirt in the near future!
to get back on-topic, it’s kinda hard to guage how big bruce is in the states, but here in england he’s not that well known – so I would say send him a letter, phone him – do whatever. Actually am I the only one who’s a little surprised he doesn’t post here? – Eddi Reader posts on her forum all the time.
One of my biggest lifetime ambitions is to jam with bruce, it might be tricky ‘cos we’re both pianists hehe, but even if i got to do that for 5 minutes I’d be made up (and if someone didn’t get it on video I’d cry
). It’d probably never happen unless I get my butt to america though.

ParticipantThanks for the listen Dave!
the album is available on http://www.daverichband.com in the shop section as a cd or as an mp3 collection- and I did hear the other day from out distribution company that it is now available on i-tunes (only after a year of waiting hehe) if you prefer your music apple-flavoured
ya know it’s funny – you’re the second guy who’s compared my voice to phil collins. It’s very strange, and must be happening with age I guess. I certainly wish I could hit his high notes.
On driving – I played one of the guitar parts, but only a rhythmic chopping part. My guitarist Brian Garrett did the great lead work on Driving, and all the other electric guitar parts. Pretty much all the acoustic stuff is my playing. It’s definately one of our favourite tracks to do live and that middle section is always a good candidate for some improvisation-time during the set.
Unfortunately we’ve had to go back to the 4/4 version of the way it is as people just can’t dance to the 5/4 version – so we keep that one just for jazzier gigs now.

ParticipantRegarding time signatures –
I think this is mainly because bruce has strong country/bluegrass roots – or maybe he just doesn’t dig fancy time sigs.
*shameless plug* – listen to our track Making Me Wings at http://www.myspace.com/daverichband
The verses are in 18/4 and the choruses 5/8
It just wouldn’t work in any other sig.
our drummer is pestering me to write something in 9/8 – the problem is getting people to dance in 9/8

Participanthmm.
i dunno.
When i first started I found it easier to kinda bob up and down to the tempo of the left hand – it kinda keeps it going easier, and then just forget about the left hand whilst playing other stuff on the right, after a while it’s just a matter of locking the different patterns in and then forgetting about them – leaving you to concentrate on showing off

Dave RichHey Dave Rich! Thanks for your post. Some very interesting thoughts! Please check out the topic “The Four Davids”. I thought you were the left hand guitar player in your band?
Are you left handed?
David Day
Lake Lanier, GAYeah, well – kinda depends what I’m doing
mostly I’m left handed, but I eat right-handed and catch a ball right handed etc.
I do play guitar also, mainly because it’s easier to do a gig carrying a guitar that trucking around the piano/keyboard.
I’ll check out that thread.

Participanttwo handed independance isn’t so hard, in fact i would say most piano playing of any standard requires it.
Other wise it’d be like banging out chords in a rhythmic pattern with the melody.
Playing a 5/8 over a 3/4 is difficult though – possible but difficult. – *EDIT* – just tried it, it’s actually pretty easy.
What I find difficult, in fact impossible right now,- is those really quick runs up and down the entire keyboard – Just can’t bloody pull that off.

Participantwell, I’ve watched/listened to it all now.
Certainly some nice stuff in there – I’d never heard the shaka-khan track, that is an awesome song – glad that was there.
I still feel that the 3 nights DVD is a better buy,- that is a brilliant concert and I watch it regularly – but the intersections is worthy of a listen – purely to hear those old songs again.
It is me or did they re-record “lost soul”? – I preferred the original but alas I had it on cassette tape and god knows where that’s gone now heh – still a great track though.

ParticipantOK from memory the CDs I have in my car. (incidentally they all are now scratched so the last 2 or 3 songs won’t play – wish I’d known about that before putting my original cds in the car)
Bruce Hornsby- Halcyon Days, Scenes from the southside, erm – the one with a black CD that looks like a vinyl record.
The Sex Slaves From Hell – absolutely fantastic Cornish folk-punk band, well worth looking up
Genesis 3 disc box set – doesn’t get much playtime.
Pat Orchard – another local guy who’s very good.
Dave Rich Band – Overload – of course
Josh Dodes – this CD drives me nuts, this bloke could be huge if only he found a great guitar player to work with – I find the CD quite sterile, mainly because it’s all keyboard/electronic sounds – it definately needs some human hitting/plucking going on. Great voice/songs though.
Edie Brickell – Shooting rubber bands at the stars – the ONLY person i’ve ever heard who sings out of tune and it sounds right.
Bob Marley – best of – for chillin.
ACDC- Back in Black – for the obligatory headbanging whilst driving sessions.
Denise Marie – all 3 cds, a great singer/songwriter I saw in Tavistock. She really is very good- the latest CD is the best, the others are OK, but sound a little in-experienced. “Who would Jesus Bomb?” is one of my favourite tracks.
Prince 2131- or is it 3121? – I like prince, always have done. He’s a little mad-scientist/genius guy in my opinion. I can’t wait til he gets out of trying to be a dance/funk artist and goes a little more jazzy. I’m sure he’s gonna produce some incredible stuff when he’s older.
Dave Gilmour – can’t remember the name of it, bores me to tears so don’t really play it. I should remember this as a “road rage” throwing cd when I need one.
Most of the rest is local bands/artists – I really do try to support these guys as much as I can and have bought some really great music from Indy artists this year.

ParticipantYamaha have used those cheesy LEDs in their Clavinova series of pianos for a while,- but looking at the one he plays on the 3 nights on the town DVD, it’s an acoustic piano with a midi controller, if it’s not acoustic then it’s a *very* nice electric piano.
I would take the LEDs off though, they’d drive me crazy! hehe.

ParticipantI reckon Gonna be some changes made sounds VERY like track 9 from Halcyon Days but at a faster tempo. (CD is in the car and can’t remember the name- it mentions the I-ching and mirror mirror on the wall)
I reckon both songs came from the same groove/playaround.
Kind regards
