    David,
I am not sure what I would have done either. I would have had a hard time letting this opportunity pass by so I guess that I would have gotten the nerve to go to Bruce and say “Hi” and probably something about the show in Greensboro and the upcoming show in Boone. After that, if it looked like he didn’t want to be bothered, I would have probably left it at that. I don’t think that I would have asked for an autograph. From what I have seen in the past though, Bruce is a very cool 8) , non-celeb ego kind of guy and not have gotten ticked off at you saying “hi”.
I am interested in what did happen though so don’t keep us in suspense too long…

Thanks Larry for your interest, but I need some more begging than that! 😆 Rich, where are you? Should I send a pose’ out after you? 😆 Rick does some great begging! 😆 Common Rich! What would you have done? :D

Just one more final thought. 😆

I couldn’t help but post this reply from Bruce from his website! Even though my post was about his solo show at Boone, I think it is very applicable to Camp Meeting!

If you let Bruce “move forward and grow”, you will like it! :D

Before I blabber on, I realized that some of you in the rest of the world may not know what is meant by “Camp Meeting”. I honestly don’t know if Bruce meant it to mean this, but “Camp Meeting” is sort of a “southern expression”. That is southern USA, not southern UK or southern whereever. It’s a “southern thing” like from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia or Tennessee.(You cant’ trust anyone that wears orange! 😆 ) I’m a tellin ya!(Another southern cliche’!)

As a PK (preacher’s kid), “Camp Meeting” has it’s roots in southern black gospel. That may fit McBride and DeJohnette very well! The teminology really fits what Bruce is trying to accomplish here! “Camp Meeting” basic meaning means “revival”. Here is a definition that I found to help you understand better:
    Revival:
1 : an act or instance of reviving : the state of being revived: as a : renewed attention to or interest in something b : a new presentation or publication of something old c (1) : a period of renewed religious interest (2) : an often highly emotional evangelistic meeting or series of meetings

Camp Meeting is meant to be a “renewed attention or interest in something” and a “new presentation of something old”! That it is! :D

If you keep that in mind, you will love it! :D

Now that you are out of your comfort zone, check out Celia. You will like it. :D Concentrate on the piano. A strong theme, some strong chords, but this is what you like about Bruce! The ability to change from chords to dancing on the piano in a heartbeat! It’s very refreshing! It’s very lively! If you concentrate on the piano, it’s everything you like about Bruce!

Next, check out Straight, No Chaser. This will stretch you a little more, but it’s excellent! :D Great theme! If you like the way Bruce “frolics” on the piano, you can’t help but like this one! For a short song, it “builds”. I can’t help but think of Schroder on this one! :D

Then check out Solar, it starts out like a solo song, which I know you like. Then, changes into another theme with both strong chords and dancing on the keyboard. It’s very creative! Everything you like about Bruce! This will stretch you the most so far. It changes themes several times which you like about Bruce, but then comes back to the familiar. Your “resting place”. A great ending! :D

It’s time! I’ve been quiet on this one for too long! I’ve been jumping out of my skin to give a few thoughts, but wanted to listen a while longer before I did. I know that this will get a few of you out of your “comfort zone” with Bruce, but at least take some time to listen to it. I think you will enjoy it! :D Let me give you some thoughts.

The first thing you need to do is purchase the CD! 😆 When you do, the second thing is to open it! 😆 I know that is a hard thing to do with the shrink wrap, but once you do, it will be a “Camp Meeting” with you and Bruce! :D

There is so much to say, but I will contain this writing to Bruce’s song’s. Here are my first thoughts, subject to change, but like I said, I know it will probably get most of you out of your “comfort zone”.

My favorite song so far is Stacked Mary Possum. It has some great piano that you will like! :D Bruce really dances on the keyboard with this one! 8) It is “upbeat” and it “builds”. I love a song that “builds”! :D When I first heard this one, I thought to myself, “Yeah”! :D

My second favorite song so far is Un Poco Loco/Chant Song. This one really “builds”. As DavidR puts it, Bruce “engages” very well on this one! :D To me, this is more like “salsa” than jazz. Sort of reminds me of a more mature and more sophisticated Joe Jackson, but better! :D (What do you Brits think about that?) (Would love to hear Dave Rich’s & Si’s thoughts on that comment!) My first thought after I heard it was, “Wow”! :D 8)

My third favorite song so far is Camp Meeting. This also has some great piano! :D Great intro! :D You will reconize what you like in Bruce here! :D If you like Bruce in concert, and I know you do, you will like this because it changes themes many times! :D This song gets “down and dirty”. 8) You will like it! :D You can almost see Bruce playing this at a show as you listen! 8) When I first heard this one, I thought “Wow”! :D 8)

Then, there is Charlie, Woody and You! :D If you like to hear Bruce at solo shows, then you can visualize Bruce playing this one! :D (Didn’t he play this at Boone?) This is another “dance on the keyboard” song! :D Very creative! :D
I must say that Christian McBride & Jack DeJohnette do a great job! They blend very well! :D

That’s enough for now! That’s just a few thoughts. Do yourself a favor! Purchase the CD, open it and just listen to those four songs! I know it will get you out of your “comfort zone”, but to get strong, you need to be stretched every once in a while! :D If you don’t have a “Camp Meeting” with Bruce, then we might need to have some Questions and Answers! :D 8)

(More to say about the other songs later. :D )

Listened to a bit of it in the store (will pick it up very soon, my CD spending budget is quite minimal at the moment) and it is far, far better than I could have expected. I was stunned by the immediate chemistry on “Questions & Answers” and “Charlie, Woody and You,” and Hornsby’s true facility in the jazz idiom. He’s not just faking it, he’s truly engaging DeJohnette and McBride at their level.

Good to hear from you DavidR! :D Well said! 8) Bruce does “engage” very well! 8) I have a feeling that his best is yet to come! :D

If Bruce and I had made eye contact, I probably would have smiled, given a little wave and left him to read his paper. I’m not one to go up to people and start a conversation because I’m terrible at small talk! :)

    Get the picture! :D

I walk into this sports bar and nobody is there. It’s Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, NC. The barkeep yells out, “How are you doing?”. I look over to the right of the bar thinking a booth might be the best place to hang out. And there he is. Less than ten feet from me. It’s Bruce! :D Bruce starts to rustle his Sunday paper as he turns the page. 8)

What do I do? My brain turned into warp speed! I’m torn in many directions! What do I do? What would you have done? :?:

What a great report! You have a talent with your writing! :D You even get “extra credit” for telling about the lighting!

There’s only a few things I can add. Bruce made it clear when he came out he was not going to play anything he played the night before at Boone. (He did make a few exceptions.) Bruce also did not take an intermission. He played for two straight hours and then played two encores.

I’m also proud to say that I was not the “disruptive one”. I was on my best behavior! :D

    Victor Alvis

Victor Alvis was born July 17, 1928, near Knoxville, Tenn. He has always been a music lover and, as a teen, often performed on the Cas Walker Radio Show as the Dobro and triangle player for the Poor Valley Boys, a regional bluegrass band that signed briefly to play on the Blu-Tunes label.

He served his country during the Korean War as a member of the 15th Field Artillery Regiment stationed near Taejon from Aug. 1950 through April 1953. He was honorably discharged and awarded the Purple Heart. Following his military service, Victor took up a career of 30+years in the newspaper industry, spending most of his years as an award-winning business journalist with the Chattanooga Free Press.

He returned to his musical roots upon retirement, tracking the rise of one Bruce Randall Hornsby from the early 80s. After the untimely death in 2004 of his beloved wife of 56 years, Beulah, Victor became an official “Bruce-head,” following the master of the ivories to performances throughout the Southeast.

He is an accomplished woodworker and enjoys TexMex dining and wearing well-tailored, three-piece suits.
