Todd-NC wrote:(that F to E bass line might explain why it sounds flat, but you’re really spelling out an F chord before returning to E)Wow! I think I got it! That’s incredible! Still sounds flat eventhough it’s not. What a master composer!
It fools my ears!
On the right hand, I can’t seem to get the G to G# thing. What is the time signature of left vs right? Is G# on the right 1/2 beat after F on the left?
I’m obviously having problems “splitting my brain in half”. I can do it on the guitar, but the piano is soo much harder! Maybe the “brain damage” is kicking in! 😆

Lake Lanier, GAPS I was so excited about this I took my lunch hour practicing. It’s nice to have a piano close by my office!

I realized I needed to clarify something I said earlier in another thread about Bruce (and Sonny) majoring in jazz.
You don’t need to “major” in anything to be good at want you do. I can personally testify to that! On the other hand, I find it interesting that jazz was Bruce’s choice as a “major”. It just tells me that was his interest “way back when, long time ago”!
(What song did that one come from?)
I’m sticking to my story. Jazz is Bruce’s calling!
It is his destiny!

On the other hand, I’ll be studying the effects of the sun, stars & moon on the tide, beach, coral & fish of Antigua!
Someone has got to do it! 😆
I will miss being there, but look forward seeing you all in Boone & Greensboro!

All this before it modulates (or “goes flat”, as you put it).
Are you with me this far?Yes, I have that. Sort of!
At my age eighth notes are beginning to be more like quarter notes! 😆 I understand that and will practice that.
What next?

Participantdaverich wrote:reading through the promo blurb just now, I do wish people wouldn’t start splurting about how masterful jazz is and how it needs years of study blah blah – Bruce has always been a jazz artist and I do wish people wouldn’t put it up on a pedestal. Someone who is reasonably competent can play jazz – learn a few scales and get improvisingIn fact I think it’s the “fear of the unknown” that makes people think that jazz is something you need a phd in to be any good at it. Looking forward to this immensely

ParticipantDo yourself a favor! Check out Noismakers!
On Great Divide, after “Bobby Reed on the saxaphone”, listen to JV’s bass solo! Now that’s “down and dirty”! I love it!
Also on Noisemakers is, “All I want from tomorrow is to play with JV everyday”.
What song is that from? What a great bass player! You don’t see many six string bass players. Most play four. Some play five, but JV is da man!

Todd-NC wrote:Where you may think he is going “flat” is the most fascinating part of his solo. Rather than shifting down to E flat, Bruce takes that particular bar into the key of F major and back to E by the next bar.
The reason it seems to slip “flat” is in the right hand, where Bruce seems to improv on the Cmaj7 scale over a F chord bass line, the 5th of the C scale is the note G. He uses the G to lead back to the G# (the strong 3rd of the E major chord/scale). In actuality, the change is a 1/2 step higher than E.
It is not easy, but it is a great example of what Bruce does so very well. Two handed independence, in the wonderful signature hallmark of Bruce Hornsby!
ToddWow! Thanks Todd for your response! What great detail! This has taken me a couple of days to digest. I’ll never be able to do that.
It fooled me. I always thought Bruce went flat somewhere. Could never figure it out.
Does it sound flat to you? You’re telling me the flat is actually 1/2 step up to sharp (G#)? That’s incredible!
So…on left key of E to F while on right 1/2 step up from Cmaj7 to G# at the same time or offbeat? What is tempo of left vs right?
I hope you can tell this if fascinating to me!
That’s very interesting!

ParticipantHere’s a story from the archives. A classic moment in Bruce history that should never be forgotten!
At a show at Biltmore summer of ‘2004, Bruce takes a mike in the middle of a song, places it in front of JV and makes him sing! 😆 You should have seen the look on JV’s face as he sang. 😆 It was a classic moment that I will never forget!
JV thanks for all you do and being so friendly! You add a dimension to NoiseMakers with your bass that nobody else could do! I enjoy watching you play! You da man!
(Hey JV! Working on that singing voice?)

Lake Lanier, GAPS As a trivia question, what was that song at Biltmore that JV sang background vocals too?

I will say that it’s something I’ve always thought of Bruce, but never have brought up. It involes a cartoon character that will remind you of Bruce. Don’t construe me wrong, it’s a compliment not a put down.

When you listen to it, you might think, “Oh, that’s just another one of Bobby’s great solos.” This is like saying, “Oh, that’s just another one of Michelangelo’s great works of art.” He plays so consistently well, we may tend to take his talent for granted. (At least, this is my reaction sometimes…).Some of my favorite Bobby Read moments:
*The Valley Road –Here Come The Noise Makers
*End Of The Innocence-December 2, 2004-Chicago, IL-Bruce Hornsby Live release
*any time he plays during The Tide Will Rise or The Show Goes OnJackie
Jackie is soo right!
Several of those songs are on NoiseMakers. Bobby shines in NoiseMakers! In fact, Bobby makes NoiseMakers what it is. Listen to NoiseMakers and think what it would sound like without Bobby. 😥
