    Great question!

I true Road Scholar would study every possible way before they even got in their car. The “mission” to get there are fast as possible to get to the meetup. Sometimes short cuts pop up and gut instinct tells a true Road Scholar where to turn. So, a true Road Scholar doesn’t need GPS, they got GPS in their brain! :D

To be a Road Scholar you need to be highly esteemed by all road scholars, to explore remote places trying to find unfound shortcuts not shown on mapquest, to report on assorted journeys, shows, songlists and thoughts to other road scholars, to help organize meetups near venues, to practice two hand independence on the dash while driving and be looked upon as a true fan by the Bruce Nation.

    Steve,

You’re close, but probably still a Road Scholar in Training. Need more information about the number of shows, miles driven and some more road stories. Walking 10 KM (6.2 miles) to a show does give you some extra credit! :D

You will be a good Road Scholar one day! :D

    Well David….let’s see if I qualify. :)
Jamestown made show #21 for me. I live in eastern PA so Bruce is often in “my neck of the woods.” I’ve seen him a number of times in or near Philly and New York. I’ve traveled to Richmond, Baltimore, DC, Pittsburgh, and now Jamestown. The furthest I’ve gone is Indianapolis….to treat my sisters to a show. This last trip, I was travelling with Elyce (gdwoman) which was especially great! I love when I get to share a show with someone of equal enthusiasm.
Every mile has been worth it….and I’m looking forward to more!

I think 21 shows qualifies you! With one exception…….We need to hear from you more often!

Let it now be know that I hereby decree & declare that you are a Road Scholar and are no longer a Road Scholar in Training. You will now be bestowed all the rights and privileges by the Bruce Nation of not only being a true Bruce fan, but membership into the elite society of Road Scholars. :D

Speaking of that one…What is the difference between the version on Bruce’s album as opposed to the one on the Backdraft Soundtrack. I know that I heard there is a slight difference but not sure what it was…

    I can’t answer that one. But, I do know……..

The show goes on and the sad eyed sisters go walking on
    Everyone watching all along
The show goes on as the autumn is coming
And the summer is all gone
Still without you, the show goes on….. :D

Bruce is playing with Ricky Skaggs and Chaka Khan tonight at the 400th anniversary celebration of the first landing at Jamestown. HAmpton isn’t all that far away in terms of miles. As much as I would loe to go and see that show, I hae vowed to stay away because of the traffic debacle that is Williamsburg this weekend. In some really wonderous feat of planning, they scheduled the Jamestown celebration and the LPGA golf tournament at Kingsmill on the same weekend. As badly as the Jamestown planners have botched everything else, I just cant see subjecting myself to that hell, even if it were The Beatles playing.

David – I have to ask… if Bruce said he’d play either Candy Mountain Run and Tango King for you, which would you choose?! 😆

That’s a tough one to answer!

    On one hand:

Been around town and we’re going again
Halleljah when you get to the end
Summer’s come now don’t you feel the sting
All going down looking for the tango king……..

    Or,

    Rolling and a tumblin
    Take me to the mountain
    Fly closer to the sun……

Tango King has got an interesting beat that’s different from anything Bruce does. That is creative and I like that! On the other hand, Candy Mountain Run has got some sort of “energy” about it that sticks to you!
    I obviously like them both.

In Tango King, John D’earth plays a mean trumpet, but in Candy Mountain Run, Bobby plays a mean woodwinds and Doug plays a great guitar lick that I think is better that Eric. Sonny is outstanding in Candy Mountain Run! JV & JT seems to get into Candy Mountain Run more than Tango King.

Thru the years I’ve heard Tango King more that Candy Mountain Run, but Candy Mountain Run was very outstanding at Biltmore last year. In fact, it was memorable!

All that to say…….I don’t know. That’s the beauty of you guys penning me with the “Czar of Blabbery” I can now blabber all I want even if it doesn’t make much sense. 😆

Forget about tomorrow live for today
No guarantee I’ll make it anyway
My special candy tastes good now

    David

Thanks DavidR! That is interesting! Maybe that’s why I like Tango King so much.

What about the two hand independence on Circus on the Moon? Does Bruce go flat in the middle of the score? Does he go flat with the left hand, right hand or both?

I need to know so I can sleep better at night! 😆 I’ve always wondered that!

Well, both Bruce and Brad are influenced by Keith Jarrett, I find. They both have fantastic two-hand independence:
Other than that, I find their touch and rhythmic feel pretty different – Bruce doesn’t play over the bar line the same as Mehldau does, and the harmonic language Brad uses is more advanced than how Bruce usually improvises. Brad’s also done a lot more stuff in odd meter than Bruce has.

I’ve always thought that too! The first time I ever heard that I thought “Let my love open the door”.

I’m showing my age, but back in the sixties when you wanted more than the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Herman Hermits and the like, you turned to The Who, Yes, and later to Pink Floyd and an American band that brought some jazz influence into music named Steely Dan. Did someone say Steely Dan? :?:

I’m a telling ya! Jazz is Bruce’s calling and destiny!
