Fun fact – tonight, he did not play ANY of “the big three” and we were actually all pretty pleased by that, and by what he DID play. I’m terrible with set lists, but he opened with Gonna Be Some Changes, and then launched into Spider Fingers (w/Tempest Fugit AND Tighten Up jams). This really set the tone for me, for the rest of the show.

Danced my ass off…. the 2 hour drive home from Atlantic City was easy, with the adrenaline buzz I was floating on.

Looking forward to my last show of the tour – tomorrow night in Boston.

I vote mutt. I also vote for a rescue from the humane society, pound or SPCA…. these dogs are almost always the most eager to please as they know you have saved their little doggie lives (so therefore, would probably submit happily to piano or singing lessons as necessary to meet your requirements).

I will be in NYC – Not sure what my schedule is that day, but I’m sure a meet-up would be very doable. The show is in the seapoart, and there plenty of bars/places to meet nearby -the only thing is that they are typically crowded with Wallstreeters getting off work and having a drink around the time before the show.

I can see if I can come up with a place that’s relatively close yet off the beaten path a bit…. how many people do we think we are looking at?

    Hey David,

It’s so nice to hear the reports from the road. Once upon a time, I was the one traipsing around the country following these boys from town to town. As a Grad student then teacher, it just seemed to work out for me during school breaks. Man was I spoiled! I wish it were still so…

I was so pleased to be able to make it out to the Northwest to my former hometown shows… and am very much excited by the fact that there seem to be monthly shows in the Northeast coming up – end of Aug/Early Sept – NYC and Portsmouth, End of Sept/Early Oct – NJ and Boston. I’ll be hitting those shows for sure.

Just saying that I’m glad you’re there to carry the torch!

    Keep having that ball!

I have to say that I just saw two Bruce/Bela shows in a row. Woodinville, WA and Portland zoo. Bela opened in Woodinville and Bruce opened in Portland. Both shows were amazing musical experiences! I have worked with and followed Bruce since the early 90s. Knowing Bruce the way i do, i think it is clear that he has great respect for Bela and considers him an equal and thus deserving equal bill and that would be why they share top bill and rotate opening and closing. I understand the point that Bela is a bit more mellow but the encores with both full bands on stage made it hard to leave both venues! SERIOUS JAM AND HIGH TIMES!
DON’T MISS THESE SHOW REGARDLESS OF WHO OPENS!

I was at the same two shows, and am in full agreement. Bela and the Flecktones are right on, tight, and funky. There is no question as to the talent and awesomeness of this band. Regarding Bruce…well, ’nuff said here about how much we love him and the Noisemakers. While I am typically partial to seeing just Bruce and the Noisemakers (sans co-headliner or opener), this is one combination I flew 3000 miles to see because I was unable to make any of the East Coast shows due to other obligations. Bottom line is – if you have the chance to see one of these co-billed shows, don’t miss it. You will have no regrets.

    Greetings All…

Yes, it’s been a very VERY long time since’ I have visited The Board – the world has kept me plenty busy. I do have tremendous gratitude for my dearest of friends (Kat) who keeps me in the loop. (I remember when I was the one with the loop keeping responsibilities…ah how things change!).

The good news is that I have just purchased my airline ticket to Virginia, arriving late morning on Saturday for Opening Night of SCKBSTD. Yes – I am well pleased and ready for the quick flight down and a road-trippin’ adventure home with Kat.

Si – sorry you won’t be there. We’ll miss you………………………………. biatch.

Best to all – see you in a few weeks

My heart is with Bobby, Ann, Susannah and the entire Hornsby Clan. My family went through almost the identical situation in 1999 – I felt a giant hole in my heart last night up on reading Si’s message.

Interestingly, just this morning, a friend of my brother’s wrote to me and mentioned that he was really feeling Dave. So, as much as the Hornsby’s are feeling their loss, and there is no way to replace that living, beautiful energy that RS carried with him, he will never be completely lost.

…and I also know that those words mean nothing to the family right now. In time, they will, but not right now. …and I am so sorry

I have one of those alternate copies of The Way It Is LP…. with the funky cover. I also have some good shwag from the millennium new years show – the plastic cup they gave away (which I use when I brush my teeth!) and one of those brass “ticket” key chains – still in it’s plastic bag.

…oh, and I also have an original copy of the photo used for Here Come the Noisemakers, signed by Bruce with a personal note to me. (but you guys should have assumed that).

I remember being at those shows, and I was wandering around the back of the field. Being “less than tall” I can never see the stage, and I didn’t realize Bruce was with the boys that night (although I should have known, as he always played with them when they played near Virginia). Anyway – I just remember hearing the keyboards and saying to myself, “Wow, Vince (Welnick, the Dead’s keyboard player at the time) sounds really good today!” Then I got a look at the large video screens and realized what was going on, and said to myself “oh – I see. He sounds so good because it’s Bruce!” :D

I’m kind of mortified to say that my first show was Adam and the Ants at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC in 1982. I have no idea how much the tickets cost – I was 14.

Saw a variety of concerts over the next few years, varying from the Ramones to the Go Gos to Chicago and James Taylor.

Then on March 27, 1985 I saw my first Dead show at Nassau Collesium and that is when I really began to understand what music was really all about!

Oh, honey – I never had the pleasure of seeing the Octane Kids! In April of 1974 (when those black and whites were taken) I was just a cute little girl in pig tales, barely 6-years-old, living in Long Island – a far cry from UVA frat parties. I sort of doubt they’d have let me in, if you know what I mean! I just know the stories from hanging around, paying attention, and doing my homework – I guess take the “scholar” part of road scholar to heart…

hey now – yea, I’ve been absent a while. My life is in the rhythm of chaos right now, I have a lot to try to keep track of, so it’s difficult to get on line and read for pleasure. I’m changing careers, living on the edge and “working it” as hard as I can. It’s exciting and terrifying and challenging and liberating…. and that can all be very time consuming.

I don’t know a whole lot about Bobby Hi-Test and The Octane Kids, beyond what I have already mentioned…. hidden in Bobby Hornsby’s professional Real Estate Website, are the following pages…

Bobby and Ann joined Bruce at the Millennium New Years Eve gig… and I know Bobby has played with him at other gigs as well. Not sure if Ann has joined him much, but she should. I really like when they get the family up there, including RS – Ann and Bobby’s son, who is a very talented guitar player (I think he channels Jerry when he plays, so I’m a bit partial). Not only do they sound great, but it gives you that whole warm and fuzzy feeling. 😆

I love those old photos…. they are so real. They really show Bruce’s inner geek. (let’s not forget the man plays the accordion!)

Dude… that is kick ass! It’s probably from Bobby Hornsby’s site. (“Realhorsnby” Bobby is a real estate guy). It is clearly a pic from an Octane Kids gig from when they were in college. The band included Bobby on Bass… his then girlfriend (now wife) Ann on vocals and baby brother Bruce on keys.

I have always thought, it must have been a total trip for Bruce to have been a deadhead, in a band, playing Dead cover tunes… and then getting to play with Jerry and the Grateful Dead… how cool is that?

Elyce, I love you — you’re a special ed teacher, so you’re a giving person — and judging by your Pen Pic, you’ve survived a broken neck(!) But I have to place myself in the position of Defender of Ricky Skaggs again.

I feel it’s unfair to categorize the Skaggs/Thunder shows as “the same schtick every time,” and I sincerely doubt Bruce thinks so, or else he wouldn’t have scheduled so many of those gigs. Bluegrass is as improvisational as jazz any day of the week, and Skagg’s band is a top-notch group of musicians.

Just because it doesn’t suit your tastes is no need to diminish its artistry. I wouldn’t do that with the jazz stuff.

    That is all. :)

    Vic

Now, now Vic…. I’m feeling the love, no worries. I didn’t mean to insult. Please accept my apologies for any inconsiderations… I totally dig bluegrass music – have enjoyed it for a long time, but I just have found that by the time I saw my third show with Bruce and Ricky, I felt like I could join in and help tell the stories and like there weren’t any surprises left. I prefer to be caught off guard. I encourage people to see Bruce and Ricky play at least once because it’s a great show. I don’t think I would hit up a whole leg of a tour, though. Hell it was the same with The Sensitive Ones tour a while back. Bonnie Raitt and Shawn Colvin are two of my favorites, but I know that all the shows the did were pretty much the same, so I would not have wanted to see a whole slew of them. Contrast that with Bruce solo, or Bruce with Bela Fleck, or Bruce and his boys (meaning JV, JT, Sonny, Doug and Bobby… not Keith and Russel)… I could see them play every night and remain 100% attentive for every moment. Those are shows that are always changing, always different, you never know where they will go… I mean – truth be told, Bruce is far more improvisational than the Dead were (and Dead tour is where I got my “training). There is never a dull moment.

Ricky far from sucks. You are right – Bruce would not have signed on with him if he did. I just wish he would loosen up a little bit and “go with it” a little more.

    It’s all good…. stay well.

I was at the gig as well – what a great performance! Bruce was really in top form – having a clearly wonderful time. I’m sure that this group is such a breath of fresh air for him, in the midst of the gigs with Skaggs. I know those have gotten kind of old for me, and I’ve only seen a few of them. I can’t imagine Bruce having to play to/with the same schtick every show…..

Killer music on a sweltering hot day – well worth the sweat!

(ps – on a funny note, while inside J&R, Kat (sunflower Kat) tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Hey, Elyce, you’re on the wall at J&R!” – pointing to a photo of Bruce from a signing at J&R that was clearly from when Here Come the Noismakers came out – in the photo is the promo poster for the cd right behind Bruce! ….ah, her 15 minutes of fame continue…. ;-)

I really like Rainbows Caddilac and Tango King… but the problem is it might take some time, and creative breeding, to “manifest” these names. If I’m not mistaken, race horses names are chosen based on thier parentage. So I believe that the names must incorporate some aspect of at least one of the parents, if not both….

it might take a while to come up with some of the appropriate pedegree’s for the cooler names.

I think all you really need to do, in order to “hang out” with Bruce is to have the balls to say hello. (oh, sorry – was that a bit strong with the language? oh, well…. you know what I mean).

The very first time I had a chat with Bruce was outside the Calvin Theater in North Hampton, Mass. I was in my car, looking for a parking spot – while sitting at a stop sign, I noticed Bruce standing outside the theater talking to some folks. I backed up the car a bit and, perhaps a bit rudely interrupting, called out, “Hey, Bruce!” He looked over, and I beckoned him with that crooked finger thing, and said, “I have something for you.” I was completely shocked when he actually started walking towards my car. I had made an elaborate song request, and gave it to him. We chatted for a moment and when I told him my name, I was amazed that he had remembered me from a card I had written for him at a show the week before. That was really all it took.

(I have always had this problem with being shy…. )

    (ok, that’s a lie.)

That was in the beginning of my ride “on the bus” – well before Noisemakers or any of that. I guess when you followed the Dead like I used to, no one in the band or crew noticed you because there were a gazillion others following the band. However, when you follow Hornsby around with that same level of passion and zeal (which seemed perfectly normal to me, and not a bit like stalking – which fortunately, Bruce “gets”) the folks begin to recognize you, so eventually I sort of became a part of the family – but it all started with a “hello.”

Don’t be shy – Bruce is real people and he surrounds himself with people who are real people. It’s all good.

Well, David – that’s not me in the Candy Mountain Run video from Intersections (which, as it turns out, is from the 3 Nights onthe Town DVD). There was a woman in the audience who was filmed a bunch, but I was dancing off to the sides. I have a hard time being contained in the seating seciton a)becuase I just like to dance too “big” and b)I love to dance, but don’t want to irritate people. Because so many of Bruce’s fans prefer to sit (which I just don’t understand, but must respect) I do what I can to at least be mindful that I don’t piss off too many people. I’m lucky that most people smile at my dancing, or are at least amused by it – but some folks do get kind of aggrivated. My goal is to have as much fun as possilbe without annoying other people. I’m not always successful, but I try.
