Hey JF1 you got my same style when it comes to complaints about our boy BH. I too wouldn’t want all those cameos from members of a band that I wasn’t too familiar with. One or two songs but those cats better know the songs and have killer ass solos. I get frustrated when I see/hear/read that ol’ Brucie is playing the same 20ish songs during the past three years. I mean, bust out from the archives give me Passing Through, Harbor Lights, The Chill, or something…dust off some of those jams that haven’t been played in like 8 years. If I was ever asked what I thought was Bruce’s best years concertwise it would have to be somewhere betweeon 2000-2005 as those years and especially 2001/02 when they really jammed out the improvs and actually played requests as at most the shows I’ve been to in the last couple years, the requests aren’t really getting played as much as they used to…or else those set list wouldn’t be so similar.

Bruce hates the sound of his old records… I always thought he meant solely the piano sound, but maybe he meant his voice also. Perhaps the change is deliberate?

Bruce told us after a show while signing a bunch of albums for some ebay dealers that the Range doesn’t even play on the first couple albums that majority of those tracks were just Bruce playing to a drum machine and that the songs were pieced together in the studio. I don’t know though the band is credited on those albums and it sounds like a band but that’s what he was saying while signing them.

So far the closest show for me is the Virginia shows which are 6 to 7+ hours away. What I think is lame about this announcement is that they announce these dates 2 days before tickets go on sale. I need a little more time to make the call on traveling 3 times longer than what the show is going to be especially since those dates fall during the week. I would have loved to have more than 2 days to decide on taking the gamble that he may not play closer. Also seeing that its a two band gig that might make the set even less than 2 hours…so far this summer isn’t looking too hot as nobody wants to play near me. I mean even Phish ain’t coming near my neck of the woods. So far the only act swinging through is Dave Matthews Band and they are playing within 4 hours of me 5 times! Keeping my fingers crossed on more and closer dates!

Loved the interview. Thanks for posting the link-I’m now an “official” podcast subscriber! :)

Bruce mentioned that his solo shows sell more tickets than the band shows. This really astonished me. Does anyone have any theories as to why this is so?

    Jackie

I think that may be by accident as I have read some interesting and yet pathetic reviews on ticketmaster.com and livenation.com that many of those reviewers didn’t even know the show they were going to see was actually just Bruce and a piano and then bitched about it.
Maybe these people see the billing with The Noisemakers and they think its something else so they don’t attend.
It seems like any ‘solo’ show I have been to some ‘guy’ asks me if this is with a band or is it a solo.

West Coast Tour!?!? Full band or solo?

And what kind of “dumb” questions did you ask Bruce haha? I’m sure I have some similar questions.

I really didn’t ask him ‘dumb’ questions as I was just saying that to be stupid…..it was more or less just conversation about random stuff…mostly releasing more live shit, what he plans on doing in ’13, and we talked about his son Keith’s great game he played the night before as that was the reason BH came to town.
I’m not sure if the West Coast tour will be solo or full band as once he said West Coast I started talking about something else as I won’t be WC anytime soon so I didn’t need to know, sorry. He did say he will come back East and he is doing a spring or summer tour with Ricky Skaggs which I’m not too excited about as I would rather have him tour with the Noisemakers

…..but any Bruce is good Bruce unless its with a Fake Jerry ala Furthur…that one was for ‘nilla lips;)

It was so rewarding to hear Bruce admit he was eating in his car at “Taco Hell” when a working lady knocked on his car window … so details of “Sad Moon” were factual inspiration! Also, I greatly enjoy the awesome independent dexterity of “Night On The Town” live.

I have a recording from 94 or 95 where he tells that story and I kid you not…the first time I heard the recording I was sitting in the parking lot of a TB in Florida. My buddy and I just looked at each other laughing and then both without a beat each looked out our windows for some reason which caused even harder laughter.

I consider ’98 when Doug joined to be the begining of the NM era…the album ‘Here Comes the Noisemakers’ are shows from 98-00 so that is basically why I consider ’98.

60% of yuppies looking to hear Range hits
15% of ‘deadheads’ looking to hear Grateful Dead covers
25% of ‘die-hards’ but this percent might be even smaller as when I’m at shows most people around me tend to have no clue what is going on but they do seem to know some songs.

    -off subject moment-

Yeah I was glad not to get Sandy…Farrell is nice too, but I didn’t get why Bobby V got the blame as I would have got rid of Big Pupi Ortiz and his fellow entourage/distractions.
    The Francona era coming soon.

Seeing you live in Virginia, have you ever gone over the bridge pictured in ‘Scenes from the Southside’. One day when I go to VA I plan on hunting that thing down and getting a picture with it….same goes for the scene of Harbor Lights.

    Yo G —

I presume that your “detailed review” is on its way, having sprung from your fingers feverishly typing away at the keys…what’s that? Too busy stalking Joe Maddon again? LOL

Good setlist, I’m gonna try and give ol’ BH a couple of challenges or three…started writing them down already.

I guess you won’t be joining me for the Friday Keene show and/or the Sat. Rutland show, huh? SiTwi had also threatened but I’ve heard nothing from him, either. :(

    Oh well, waddaya gonna do.

Back to topic — details and gossip, please!

    T

    Yo T,

Word broseph you seen that Acta got fired…I know someone that works with him that says he favors…well you know and that upset the rest of the team so who knows if they sabotaged to get him fired.
Yeah I gotta come back to give a review as I’m heading out the door…I just stopped by for a minute but will be back with my tales of the show.
Also T tomorrow is my last day for baseball stalks…hopefully theres a decent tale that comes from that if not I’ll have to create one.

I know of two shows last year 10/14/11 & 10/15/11 with Moyes.
I attended the 10/15 show and I thought Moyes did a great job….the only thing missing was the drumstick tricks that Sonny does…but other than that Moyes added a nice rock sound.
I got to hang with him on Bruce’s tour bus and he seemed really cool. When I asked Bruce if he could play Lost In The Snow for me he said Moyes don’t know that one and Moyes jumped up off his seat and tells Bruce ‘Yeah I know that one’ and Bruce then says ‘ok well play it then’ and then Bruce asks Moyes if he’s sure he knows it and Moyes did the beat for a minute or so to re-assure Bruce that he did know it. It was great that he stepped up to make sure that I can get my request granted.
I have yet to find either of those two recordings but hopefully Bruce puts out the ‘boards of them after the show I asked Wayne Pooley if they’d ever be considered a release and he said most likely so who knows about that.

Good luck finding a recording and if you do please let me know.

😯 You skipped seeing Bruce to go see BB King sing parts of two songs and play guitar for 12 minutes…seriously thats basically all you get from BB these days.
Unless you got more please let me know, because usually his show will consist of his band playing for about an hour with BB talking and playing with his guitar for a few minutes then talking with a little singing here and there and a little bit of guitar playing…I couldn’t imagine trading a chance to see Bruce for something like that.
I hope you had a good time though :P

edit: I hear ya if you never seen BB King before as it is a tempting thought to go see a ‘blues legend’ but its also a lesson learned after you witness what goes on at his shows. Hopefully you got lucky and he actually played/sang a full concert for you guys.

I wonder if closing with Big Rumble was a tribute to a departed friend. Tony “Big Rumble” Merriman was a regular at the Kentucky shows.

He didn’t mention it. I think he played it because it isn’t that long of a song and he was already going over the curfew time.
I didn’t even think we’d get an encore because in Pittsburgh he played right to the curfew and couldn’t do an encore.
