I was unable to access the board the entire downtime–and I tried doing so on some days (perhaps, foolishly) several times per day.

Suprised Bruce busted out ELK. He hates that song. “Doesn’t ring true anymore”….or at least it didn’t a few years ago to him…

He likes it on dulcimer. I think it’s in a lower key, and the dulcimer makes the song seem fresher to him.

Thank you very much for posting these.

Still love J.V.’s bass work on “Jacob’s Ladder.”

Additionally, I still cannot “get with” how people chatter incessantly during concerts.

Those of you who drive great distances and go to multiple shows are truly devoted fans.

Maybe a peripheral V.I.P-type of perk could be one in which song requests would get bumped up the “song request ladder” based on the number of current tour ticket stubs are stapled to the request sheet.

I’ll try to have a better piece of paper to write swing street on. That is one that has not been played in years!

Yeah I haven’t seen/heard him do that one in awhile.
What I do is I usually hit up a craft shop like Pat Catan’s and get bright colored paper to make my requests on…so that it not only stands out, but I can also tell when he’s looking at my request. I usually hurry up and take a picture when he’s reading my request 8-)
I found this paper that is basketball print and I wrote ‘Please take me to the Old Playground’. I kinda figured he wouldn’t play it but it would have been pretty cool to have a pop-rock moment as its one of my favs from the Range era.

Do your feelings get even a little bit hurt if the song you requested doesn’t get played?

I also like “Great Divide” from this concert very much–so much so that, when I listen to other recordings of “Great Divide,” I almost always sing the word “Roseburg” like Bruce does in this version.

As a sidenote, this performance seems to be the only concert (if there others omissions, I haven’t yet discovered them) that’s no longer available at Munck.

In another thread, a couple of people said that they don’t particularly care for “Big Rumble,” and though it’s not one of my favorite songs, one performance of it is one of my all-time favorite Bruce performances. (It’s from my first purchase of a live recording of Bruce, and it “sealed the deal” for me: How great was he that he could be so generous as to share the stage with a longtime friend and let the friend sing, not one, but two verses? A great Bruce moment:

I might be mistaken, but I thought that his son, Russell, was on the track team at Oregon. (In New Orleans, during the JazzFest performance, Bruce points to someone in the audience and says, “And I like your hat: “Go, Ducks.”

…and I bet we could get him to wear a custom made shirt if it had a small Oregon Ducks “O” on one of the cuffs or on the front of the shirt where the front pocket would be (I see a custom stage shirt as having no pockets).

I understand Bruce’s choosiness. He really needs something that is custom tailored. Getting in the way of that, however, is Bruce’s aversion to pretentiousness. But he shouldn’t expect to have such a unique and singular, yet extremely eclectic, taste in music and not to have that same approach to clothing. Music made for the masses, clothing off the rack: Neither is going to appeal to Bruce.

    But, you know…

    BTW, let’s take a poll…….
How many people would like a pattern so they could sew their own shirts? :? How many people would rather pay for a completed shirt? 😆

I agree with highway_61… I really hope this little venture can work. I mean, how many other artists have fans that are so dedicated that they want to design clothing for them? Face it, there is a fine line between fanaticism and obsession…. and I’m not sure which side of the line this falls. 🙄

    ***seven more and counting***

In regard to the line between fanaticism and obsession, I really do think it’s really just gratitude: We are thankful there is music that defies genre, that moves us (often simultaneously) emotionally, physically, and intellectually.

I’ve PM’d Si to see if he can help us find out neck size and sleeve length (I suppose anyone of us could Facebook Kathy, but I believe a query from Si would seem the least intrusive)

In the meantime, thank you for not allowing my post about designing a shirt to just fall by the wayside. If you need some cash for materials if you continue working toward a prototype, please let me know.

I really hope (I would be very happy, and much more importantly (!)–I think Bruce would be even happier) if you could make the shirt happen (with or w/o epaulets, though I can see Bruce enjoying the epaulets).
Re: the sweatshop, I know, of course, that you are kidding, but I know that making several shirts would entail a great deal of work for you, so I was thinking that maybe (and here’s my sewing ignorance reappearing, perhaps) you could make a few shirts for you, Bruce, and your loved ones and, then, could make the pattern available to others who wanted to make shirts for themselves/their loved ones, as well.

It’s possible it was Santa Barbara the night before, but I was almost sure he did Super Freak in Scottsdale towards the end, either during or right before the encore, after getting heckled with it by an audience member. It is entirely possible the drive time and jet lag from that weekend might have done crazy things to my memory.

Yes, I can imagine. I live only twenty-five minutes from the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, but I was so tense from anticipation and so moved by the concert that I was exhausted by the time I got home. I can’t even imagine that whole thing times five. But I’m certain that he didn’t do “Super Freak.” (He did it when I saw him Ricky Skaggs in Mesa a couple of years ago, though.)

Thank you. I definitely will check that out. Somehow, I didn’t realize that “Most of the Time” had been on the front page. Again, thanks.

I appreciate very, very much the five-concert review, and I thank you for posting it.
One thing, though: I was in the third row @ Scottsdale, and I did not hear or see a performance of “Super Freak.”

I’ve been giving this some thought and would like to suggest that the tailors/seamstresses/designers among you fashion some shirts for Bruce. (I have zero fabric arts skills, or I would try my hand at this.)

I think Bruce wore the black shirt for the longest time because he is not a guy to stand in front of the mirror and preen; nor is he one to want to invest time in considering what outfit he should wear on a particular night. He wants to have something that he know–no matter how he is feeling about himself that day–is going to look a certain level of good, and on many days, excellent. The black shirt filled that bill.

In addition, Bruce doesn’t want to be constrained/constricted by clothing. Because of that he wants something that hangs loose, that won’t cling, even under the siege of hot stage lights.

I would guess that the black silk (?) cotton shirt was becoming too “clingy,” and that is why he has migrated toward wearing a loose fitting sweatshirt.

Also, Bruce doesn’t want a collar to get in his way when he bends down toward the keys as he merges with the piano. (It’s possible that the collar of the black shirt had stays that made the collar stand upright, obstructing movement. A banded collared shirt in a flexible, comfortable fabric (a fabric other than that which is used in most banded collar i.e. tuxedo-style shirts would work. Or, perhaps, a half collar (something slightly taller than a banded collar).

So, this is what I’ve got:

    Banded or half collar shirt
Soft, wicking fabric that won’t cling, even when “confronted” by “stage light perspiration”
    loose fitting
    no front pockets
    solid color (probably black)
    long cut
    straight tail
something that will look “dressed up,” but will still coordinate with and/or contrast nicely with his preferred loose-fitting jeans
perhaps, a bit of texture: buttons for front pockets, even though no front pockets exist
one variation of the above with some kind of “texture” (perhaps, epaulets–which could have the added benefit of getting more performances of “Take Out the Trash”)

Please don’t let any perceived glibness of the “TOTT comment” allow you to think that I’m being facetious. Truly, the fashion designers-at-heart among you really should design something with Bruce’s stage performance needs in mind.
