ParticipantI don’t know David, we tend to make friends with EVERYONE around us at those events…so much fun! Just for clarification, this friend of mine is very style conscious, which is great, since I’m terrible for that stuff myself. She’s always correcting my outfit too, so that made her comment even funnier. As for WHY Bruce dresses the way he does, well…let’s just say he’s very pragmatic. Black clothes and jeans are practical, don’t show dirt so much, wash easily, etc. Black shirts and jeans are what ALL my musician friends wear when touring, it’s just that that uniform is usually reserved for “side” men, not “front” men. What’s endearing about all of that is it’s indicative of Bruce’s “less glamour-more quality content” approach to everything he does.

ParticipantMy best friend and I have been to so many of Bruce’s shows, and usually get to hang out and chat with the guys for some time after…anyway, after about her fourth show, sitting in the stands, watching Bruce come onstage wearing the usual outfit, my girlfriend leans over and whispers in my ear, “Oh crap, not again…we’ve just GOT to take that boy shopping”…..

ParticipantCurious to know if there’s been any response from Bruce to the new cover album? He’s a busy puppy, as usual, these days, but he’s never failed to respond before. Any word at all? Has anyone heard from him?

ParticipantBeing the children of two musicians, my kids (7&12) have been exposed to a huge range of music of every stripe. Avante-garde, jazz, bluegrass, classical, country, pop, rock, classic 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, yada, yada, yada….I mean, there’s 700 songs on my ipod alone!
They both have very broad ranging taste, musically, but the absolute reigning king of music for my kids is Bruce. It’s the one thing they always agree on. If we’re on long road trips, we have to have all of his CDs with us. My daughter’s favorite song is “Levitate”…she sings it to herself before she goes into a soccer game. She feels it helps her play better, gives her more confidence. My 12 year old son’s favorite song of all is “Here We Are Again”…he listens to it over and over…loves the changes musically and the concepts lyrically. My son also loves “Space Is the Place”…Bruce’s son was 11, I think when he did the voiceover on this song, so it speaks quite clearly to my 12 year old now…This makes me incredibly happy….meganm

Rich, thank you. For all your kind comments and musical support. I’m really excited to hear about those guys buying the album. The tribute albums are an embarrasment of riches, really, I’m honoured to appear on them with such a talented group….Let me know if you can bend the ear of the DJ! I want to come on down there and play!

ParticipantActually, I have third row tickets for the Vancouver show the previous night! First time since ’94 that my best friend and I don’t have to travel for hours to see a show….
Should be a very good time…

ParticipantOr maybe R.S…..he’s big on family.

ParticipantDavid, you beat me to the Hot House Ball, doggone it!
Running mate? Pat Methany, of course!
Meganmeganm
ParticipantOh, I forgot to say, you’re absolutely right about the band. The guys I work with are a motley crew of musical geniuses and I don’t use the term genius lightly! I’ll post the information about their performances on this album after I have a look at my (still being written) liner notes….
Thanks again,

ParticipantHoly cow, Rich, I’m blushing!! Thank you so very much for your kind words…we’ve been hanging onto these songs for a while now, hesitant to release them in this form, because my producer/guitarist/husband Robbie Steininger felt that the production was not up to rigorous scrutiny and it might not stand up to listening by people who are used to what they hear on the radio, ie: big, clean, idiosyncratically careful production. Finally I just got sick of waiting for people to hear the songs in any form, so I said, “Let’s run with the demos!!”
Your comments are hugely vindicating for me! Please be brutally honest with your track by track, since I deeply respect your opinion. I’ll look forward to that so much.
You’ve really made my day. Thanks again.
Meganmeganm
ParticipantSorry to disappoint you, guys, but that was an entirely “by ear”, not transcribed or written down one off! My husband, guitarist Robbie Steininger, just listened hard to Bruce and Chaka’s version, and adapted it for his guitar spontaneously. He’s a studio session player, and is very accustomed to doing this stuff “on the fly”, so we don’t really have anything available to offer! I wish I could be of more assistance….
My apologies,

ParticipantThanks, David.
It’s not technically a “live” album, in other words, we weren’t in front of an audience when we recorded these songs, but most, if not all the songs were recorded in a very basic fashion, live, “off the floor”, no retakes. A song in there called “Man In My Blood” was a one shot deal.
So, yeah, there’s mistakes in there and some flat notes and some stuff you might not see on something more “produced”, but we like it. It’s fun , it’s more like our live shows, and it’s more kinetic, spontaneous and real…minus the wild applause LOL ;0
The Bunker, incidentally, is what we call my husband Robbie’s basement studio…but don’t be mislead, some of the best players in Canada have recorded there…some of them appear on this record!
I await your critical appraisal and am humbled and uplifted by your support….
Meganmeganm
ParticipantVery cool stuff indeed, Rich. Thanks for the compliment and right back atcha. I feel very privileged to share a CD with all of you most talented people….I’ve already sent an email along to Mary Cockshoot, who also turned in a remarkable performance…I also was very taken with the creativity of Alan Kerry’s “Lost (In The Snow) Soul. Great fun!

ParticipantWell David, I really enjoyed the Friday night show…it was a different experience than usual, with the band rather comically introducing themselves as they entered the stage, ie:” Hello, my name is Bobby Read and I’ll be playing saxophone for you this evening.”…..and a short, tight, thoroughly packed setlist, played without the usual preamble, entertaining stories or long interludes. But looking at their faces, and talking with Bruce and Bobby later, it was obviously a ball for all of them, and maybe more fun just for being so different and unexpected. You know how Bruce loves throwing curves and this was simply another one.
I was surprised by a very straightforward, classic interpretation on solo piano to open the show with The Way It Is (spiked by the band’s introductions), by an exquisite new song possibly titled, “When Continents Drift” (help me here Allisa! Monica!) written for the upcoming Broadway musical and a truly moving and uniquely “Bruce” rendition of an old George Jones chestnut (don’t know the title).
The setlist itself was unexpected….they pulled a lot of rabbits out of the hat, stuff you don’t hear that often. I didn’t write the setlist down, so I won’t butcher an attempt at one, but suffice it to say it was a reawakening.
My girlfriend and I rounded out the weekend with some shopping in Seattle and came home Sunday evening.
Monica, I heard Bruce mention your name, but didn’t twig that you were “THAT” Monica until I was off talking to Bobby Read, but when we looked up from our chat you’d already left! I’m so sorry not to have had a chance to spend some time talking with you! Well, next time I hope! And Allisa? Third time lucky, I guess! We’ll plan it better next time.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Meganmeganm
ParticipantLooks like it’s you and me, Allisa!
Well, you, me and all the wonderful people who come along with us for the ride…I take my best friend with me every year and we have a good, old fashioned “girl’s weekend”…it doesn’t get any more fun than that! Unless we all hook up, that is….
Meganmeganm
ParticipantI’ve been wondering that very thing myself lately, since Si has had my contribution for a long time….(since last year, actually, because I gave him two songs, but he only had room for one)…I’m itching to hear what everybody’s gotten up to—my efforts, while heart-felt, are a little pedestrian next to some of the more fun, out-of-the-box creative spins on Bruce’s work. I admire my fellow contributors tremendously and look forward to hearing the results!
