ParticipantLovely youtube video, Monica! Lovely! I have one boy and one girl myself, so I know how magical that is….my kids are old enough now to FIGHT over their favorite Bruce songs….Mason (9) is very big on the Camp Meeting album (has his guitarist/producer father’s Jazz soul…..) but Charlotte (4) is still hanging with me on Spirit Trail, especially See the Same Way…..she can really shake it, Man!
would love to hear more about your beautiful family!!

ParticipantOoooooh, this is a serious challenge for me….it would be much easier to count the songs I’m NOT fond of (and even then, I’d have a tough time finding any!) But as for a top ten, let’s see…..
1)The Way It Is
Heard this when it first came out and it literally made me fall to my knees—-thank goodness I was in my living room! The thought that went through my head was, “Holy Smoke, somebody’s finally writing real music!!”
2)Every Little Kiss
Can’t help myself! I too am aware of Bruce’s feelings about it, and I even understand WHY he feels that way about it, but personally I find this song powerfully evocative and moving. I also enjoy hearing Bruce’s old, caramel candy/primal scream, un-educated voice every now and then….
3)Fortunate Son (Spirit Trail is my favorite album. I love every song on it and this one particularly)
4)Sunflower Cat
5)Harbour Lights
6)Look Out Any Window- Fields of Grey (It’s a tie–is this cheating??)
7)Shadow Hand
8)Across the River
9)Halcyon Days
10)See the Same WayEven as I’m writing this, I know I’m going to go and check the CD inserts and find 40 more that I could’ve swapped for these….but these were what leaped into my head….
Incidentally, my favorite cover combo is Girl From The North Country/Darlin’ Be Home Soon. Rips me to pieces.Happy Birthday to my dear friend, Bruce!

Bruce: Happy Birthday! (you are gettin’ sooo old)Well thank you so very much for saying so…and yes, WOW Bobby Read INDEED!! It’s a rare combination when talent like Bobby’s comes accompanied by such an open and generous heart. I’m lucky to count him among my friends.
And hey, if Bruce is gettin’ old, it’s only like fine wine, baby, it just keeps getting better…..Happy Thanksgiving!

ParticipantWhat a shame, David!
I have such a strong feeling Bruce would’ve enjoyed meeting and chatting with someone like you…..

ParticipantDon’t put me in either camp, David! I love the new jazz CD and the bluegrass CD equally…I just believe that the musicianship and improvisatory nature of both kinds of music are equally wonderful!! My thing? It’s ALL good, because it’s ALL Bruce…He obviously doesn’t take sides, why would I?? It’s music. There ARE no sides….

ParticipantWell said, and it couldn’t be more true. Thanks Victor!

ParticipantHey, slow down people….check out one of these shows and I think you might be surprised….there is a comfortable, less urban, southern-ness to these shows that is refreshing, unassuming, unpretentious and really special…I just got back from seeing these guys in Washington and I was amazed….fans of musicianship will be picking their jaws up off the floor….it’s not “country” it’s bluegrass….the rapport and interaction between Bruce and Ricky is charming, simple and very very real….I felt much the same way as you guys before I saw the show…”what, no Noisemakers??? Whaaaaa” but I was moved deeply by the rustic interpretations of some songs we take for granted as rock or pop standards…..
Don’t knock it ’till you’ve tried it. This is an aspect of Bruce’s music that merits your attention and your attendance!
Go if you possibly can.

ParticipantYou know what I think you should do? Send an email to Bruce’s organization, explain what it would mean to you to have Bruce take a minute to sign the item you described and I’m sure they’ll pass the information on to Bruce…as everyone has already explained, all it usually takes is asking….I’ll bet he’d be pleased to do it! Just my opinion….

ParticipantHey J.V.!
We’re gonna miss you big in the Pacific Northwest this summer, my friend! Not only are you a phenomenal performer on stage, a shining light in Bruce’s show, but a genuinely wonderful human being to hang with after….
Thanks for both your excellent chops and your kind heart! Hope to see you again soon!

ParticipantI agree, Dave Rich’s band is awesome and well worth the time to listen….thanks for the tip, D.D., I really enjoyed their music.

ParticipantYes, I agree with Si, “partying” with him is not how you’d describe spending time with Bruce. Being with him feels like being with a good friend you haven’t seen in a very long time…lots of catching up to do….he asks a lot of questions, shows genuine interest in your answers, is unfailingly polite, fun, fascinating and fascinated. There is nothing “precious” or arrogant about Bruce. He doesn’t look over your head to see who else has come in the room, he never makes you feel like he’s tolerating your presence. He looks you right in the eye. You forget very quickly that you’re with someone famous.
I’ve had the experience a few times now, and I treasure it. I’m a singer/songwriter from Canada and I’ve been allowed the experience because I sent him some of my music and he liked it. Simple as that. After a phone call a few years ago which I wasn’t home to take (he left a message and ,in typical Bruce fashion, at one point apologized for “rambling” on my answering machine) we’ve simply stayed in touch, and I’ve been afforded the opportunity to enjoy his company after some shows.
I know exactly how lucky I am.
Anybody else? I’d like to know about other people’s experiences too…p.s.-shameless promotion here, I know, but please check out some songs of mine and let me know what you think! Thanks!

ParticipantI am so late, but so enthusiastic………(!!!!)
Hey everybody,
I only made my first test post on a forum today, just so I could tell the other guys who worked on Caesar Salad what a magnificent job they did!!
I thought the whole project was amazing….my favorites tracks would have to be:
Noah Wilker’s wonderful singing and playing on “White Wheeled Limousine”, and Erik Nagel and Gavin Murphy’s version of “Changes Made”….I don’t know, somehow it works better (I’m definitely out on a limb here) as a “guitar” song….
I thought the dance twist and Abi Ellis’ vocals on “Look Out any Window” were wonderful….the purity of the take on “Pastures” impressed me, as did the mezmirizing intro to “The Road Not Taken” by Fieldwork….The “Defenders” interpretation was great fun….
Did you guys enjoy this as much as I did? When can we do it again? Has anyone heard from Bruce?
Si, thanks for the opportunity to work with such a brilliant, imaginative and spectacularly creative group of musical minds….
And thanks for giving us the chance to contribute to a cause so much larger than ourselves….
Yea Missy!!
Sincerely,
Megan Metcalfemeganm
ParticipantFirst time on ANY forum….
Yes, I am a forum virgin…and I’ll answer your question before you ask it, David! I’m Megan Metcalfe, singer/songwriter, I’m from North Vancouver, B.C. Canada… And I hope I’m not seriously screwing this up….funny, I’m completely comfortable on the computer, but trying out posting so publicly makes me feel so self conscious! What a wimp, huh?
Anyway, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it…. -
