I see what you mean about having a unique style. It sounded very crisp and refined. I’m embarrassed to say I had not heard of this gentleman. I’m curious as to why Bruce chose to play THIS song at Woodstock. It’s a great song with which to highlight Land’s phenomenal sound.

Now, his playing sounds great, and Sonny Emory is a genius on the drums AND the washboard, but, in my eyes, no one compares to Mr. John Molo. I saw him play with Bruce during the Range days, and when he and Bruce played with the Virginia Symphony, and during the Jimmy Haizlip/John D’Earth days. My favorite was when Bruce and the Range played at William and Mary Hall back around ’90 or ’91. They were coming to the end of “Defenders of the Flag”, when John climbed down off the drum platform, grabbed George Marinelli’s guitar, sat on the edge of the stage with his legs dangling down, and played those first few notes of “The Star-Spangled Banner”. What a thrill!

BTW, has ANYBODY ever seen Molo with his hat OFF? That might be a more elusive sight than Bruce without a black, buttoned-down shirt!!!!!

Oh, yeah, I forgot. Speaking of “Levitate”, I got the rats at the local temporary Halloween store. Now, I actually got mine right AFTER Halloween, when they were 75% off. See, I didn’t want them for Halloween, I had OTHER uses for them ……..

Oh, but how can you NOT include “Dexter”????? I know there is only one more episode for the series, but I have become totally engrossed (pun intended) in the whole premise of the show. In fact, I have compiled a list of my own that, had the series continued, I would have sent to Dexter Morgan. Hint, hint.

Hey, anybody remember his sister, Deborah, when she played the oldest sister on “Seventh Heaven”? Quite the turn-around for THAT actress, huh?

Monica, I agree with your original observation: the more I think about it, the more correlations I see between “Dexter” and “Paperboy”. Hmmmmmm……..

Oh, man!!!! I saw JT the FIRST time he played with Bruce — ca 1991 at William and Mary Hall. And now I might have missed his last performance? Say it ain’t so!!!! Soooo glad I got my picture taken with him in Raleigh. Also, I have one of Si’s tye-dye Bruuuce.com shirts with just JT’s autograph on it. Wonder what I could trade THAT for????? A recording of the Raleigh show???? Car fare from Podunk, NC to Nasheville, TN to see Bruce and Ricky at the Ryman????

Oh, man!!!! Plugged “Cluck Ole Hen” into the old Discman and took off on my morning walk. So engrossed in the music that I walked two extra miles! Didn’t even notice. So far, my favorite is still “Darlin’ Cory”. Also love the banter between Bruce and Ricky. Please, please, please let me win those two tickets to the concert at the Ryman Theater.

Hey, Jackie, I really should have gotten back with you way before now about a couple of items:

    1. Thank you so much for helping set up the “Picnic” Fiasco! And THEN, you even helped me frantically pack everything back up when the skies opened up.
    2. I am so sorry that things were so confusing after the concert. By the time I realized that we had a bunch of your picnic stuff in our van, I could not find you. A lot of stuff got wet while stored in the cooler.
    3. Oh, about that humongous pan of peach cobbler that “accidentally” got left in our van …. Monica, John, the kidlings and I enjoyed a delicious midnight snack. They couldn’t take it with them all the way back to Texas, so I ended up with it. Well, I am the only person at my house who will touch peaches, so I made the ultimate sacrifice and dropped it of with my son and his wife on the way home. I made big-time Brownie points with them on that!!!!!
    4. As I stated before, for reasons only you and I know, I was able to attend this wonderful concert. Someday, I hope to be the one that can clear the way for you to be able to attend a BH+NM concert. I’m still awaiting the day that our schedules work out so that I can furnish transportation and accommodations for a concert. If we could get Monica and Lelie to come along, we could have an old-fashioned slumber party!!!! Sound good??????

***** annotated version of Treah’s magnificent review (I think she may have missed her calling). Comments by MVF*****

    treah, post: 8924 wrote:
The pre-show coolers were unpacked, people were lounging in chairs and on blankets on the grassy hill behind the bleacher-style seats in front of the stage, then the rain, thunder and lightning appeared. The order was given for everyone to find shelter and the concert area was cleared. Old friends were found and new friends were made while taking cover from the storm.

**** of course, Treah and I ran into an old friend at the liquor tent. While ordering my “pre-show” bottle of Shiraz, I couldn’t help but overhear the dulcet tones of a VERY familiar voice with a highly distinctive accent. I mean, where else would Dreadlock Dave be? *****

When the mighty downpour subsided, everyone had time to mingle a little more, find their way to their seats or to the area in front of the stage so they would be ready to dance,(Bruce named this group “the devotees” :). ) ,then it was concert time!

Bruce complimented the audience on being “a hearty breed” because we persevered through the storm.

***** So now I can add the phrases “devotee” and “hearty breed” to my list of talents. Right up there with “fanatic”, “psychotic”, and “stalker”.*****

    Highlights:
Bruce mentioned our friend Zann before playing Look Out Any Window

Bobby Read was on fire all night! He really shone on Tango King,Road Not Taken,Valley Road,Prairie Dog Town,Barcelona Mona(of course), and Big Rumble.

*****Had not heard Road Not Taken in person since Bruce and Molo played with the Virginia Symphony back in 1993. Very, very nice.****

High points for JT Thomas included Tango King,Road Not Taken and Valley Road,

Sonny Emory left the crowd awestruck during Barcelona Mona and Big Rumble. We were all trying to follow his hands when he played the washboard on Tropical Cashmere Sweater and Valley Road-an impossible task!

***** Sonny also showed his incredible mastery of the drumstick (perhaps he twirled baton in another life???.*****

Doug Derryberry showed us his extraordinary skills during Road Not Taken and Prairie Dog Town.

JV Collier impressed us all throughout the evening, but he was really jamming during Go Back To Your Woods,Tango King,Road Not Taken and Prairie Dog Town.

*****Bruce told the audience that the people of Raleigh must really have an affinity for those little rodents out in the Midwest badlands, according to all the requests he received. ~~~Confession time~~~ they all came from me!!!!! *****

I don’t think the word has been created yet to describe Bruce Hornsby’s playing this past Saturday night, especially during Road Not Taken. Phenomenal? Singularly spectacular? No-not descriptive enough.

*****How about “Finer than frog hair split four ways”?*****

    Some of the memorable banter:
*Bruce really liked Monica’s (babytweety2yo) request designed around a medicine bottle for Life in the Psychotropics.

***** Yes, about the new song “Psychotropics” —- I want to know where Bruce got a list of my meds. I thought it was an invasion of privacy for him to include them ALL, in order, in a public song. Shame on you, Bruce!*****

Bruce mentioned that he & his son Keith toured the NC State campus in Raleigh a few months ago. Keith was considering transferring from UNC-Asheville to the Raleigh school. He ultimately chose to attend LSU :(. (“Keith was almost a ‘Wolfpacker'”)

***** my son and ALL my money went to NC State — Go Wolfpack!! Woolf — Woolf — Woolf!!!!!!!*****

*Barcelona Mona was played in honor of Branford Marsalis, who lives near Raleigh

*****Branford lives in Durham, and sometimes shows up onstage briefly when Bruce plays the Triangle.******

*Big Rumble-the Perdue marching band plays a version of this song. Since Sonny & Bobby play “marching band instruments,” they got the spotlight during this song.

***** I have often wondered why the accordion has never been widely accepted as a marching band instrument. Hmmm.*****

***** As much as it pains me to say this, I think this Raleigh show was the best one I’ve attended ….. including the Biltmo’ Shos. Maybe it was because of all the sweet nothings that Dreadlock Dave kept whispering in my ear all night!?!? *****

    Jackie

***** Thanks, Treah, for letting me impinge on your most excellent review. Oh, and again, thank you for all your help before and during the meet up and concert. but especially your help BEFORE the concert. You know why!*****

I TOLD you why I had to pass. Believe me, I would NOT have been pleasant company AT ALL. If there had been any way to drag my carcass to Asheville, I would have. Looking at the set list, it seems Bruce simply waited a week before playing ALL of my requests. Oh well, better late than never. At least I notified SOMEONE ahead of the fact, instead of simply NOT showing up in Norfolk at Harborfest, hmmmm?

And a good time was had by all …….

And what a great bunch of “all” there was in Raleigh last night. Let’s see if the ole memory is still working ….. well, I was there, along with my roommates Junior and Abby, plus Monica and her husband John. Ran into Virginia while in line (and picked up a NEW friend who also remembers seeing Bruce playing clubs around Tidewater Virginia, way, WAY back when). Jackie and the peach cobbler made it before the rain did …. barely. HDBahn had called me around 3:45 to say that he was already there, and the sound check was getting ready to start, although I didn’t actually SEE him again until right before the show.

After waiting out the nearly hour-long rain, then numerous trips up and down the hill to put away the now-water-logged picnic, little ole MVF was in sore need of some liquid relaxant. Ran into Jackie again at the “spirits” tent, when I heard ……… a very distinctive ……… Georgia drawl, inquiring about the wares. DAVID!!!!! There was much hugging and chattering amongst us all, especially when the rain decided to return about that time. We quickly made friends with the sommeliers under the tent, and rode it out there.

FINALLY it quit raining for good, and everyone in General Admission went back to claim their original seats. Many, us included, found squatters had taken our spots, in spite of personal belongings left to hold them. Well …. since it was bleachers-style seating, the shy, introverted MVF sat her considerable backside down beside the guy. I explained the problem, as nicely as I could. Then he explained, nicely, why he still wasn’t going to move. Well, we COULD have reenacted the fight scene from that first Biltmore House concert, but instead I just slowly kept moving over, up against him (no cheap thrills there). He would move down, since I suppose he didn’t like being THAT close to me (go figure!), and then I’d move closer still. Didn’t take long to get our spots back.

Of course, it really was for aught, because, face it, none of our group has ever SAT at a Bruuuuce concert, have they?????? I know that I took my place at the left-hand side of the stage, by Bruce, and HDBahn took his customary spot at the right-hand of the stage with JT. Monica, hubby and kidlings were right up there with me, and good ole Dreadlock Dave and companion were right behind me. This way, DD and I could voice our comments, observations, and witty conversation without having Bruce stop the show and look at us (reference the Greenville/Spartenburg solo concert from many years back). Leslie was up there with us. I know there were a couple of other Board people I ran into, but by that time, I had pretty much killed off over half that bottle of Shiraz and I just can’t place you now.

So, by my count, that was at LEAST 11 Board-related people there. Hey Si, is there a record for the number of us at a concert? If not, I declare this a record number, to be beat at some later date.

    More to come…..

    MVF
    Most Vigilant Fan

UPDATE – DD says I need to add 8 more to the count, so that makes it at least 19 Board fans in attendance. If anyone wants me to add to that total, let me know!!!

Oh, yeah! Oh, yeah! That little ole rain cloud (that lasted for an hour and made national news) may have interrupted the meet up a bit (but we DID save the peach cobbler!), but it didn’t dampen the spirit of the concert one bit! SO glad to see ole Dreadlock Dave there! We actually had some pretty good ” hangin’ out time together!
