Changing the subject (sort of), I also enjoy listening to Bruce’s versions of Comfortably Numb and Tempus Fugit. I neglected to add these to my original favorite covers list because they appear in so many of the great recordings I have that I’ve been thinking of them as Bruce’s own songs instead of covers.

Oh, Jackie, I agree. I don’t know how I, of all people, could have left out “Comfortably Numb”. As much as I love Pink Floyd, I absolutely love the way Bruce handles the little nuances of the lyrics. Especially the lines, “…now I’ve got that feeling once again, I can’t explain, you would not understand, this is not how I am…” That phrase got me through some pretty tough times last summer. In fact, when I put that particular disc from Intersections in the player, it almost goes to 4:30 in “Fortunate Son” all by itself.

It seems that we like so many of the same things, are you sure we aren’t twins separated at birth???? 😉

I feel so inadequate now! The “oldest” items I own are the original cassette tapes of “The Way It Is”, “Scenes from the Southside”, “Night on the Town”, and a ticket stub from 1990 for “Bruce Hornsby and the Range present ‘A Night on the Town'” at William and Mary Hall (check out my pics from that show on Bruuuce.com). Oh, and I also have the signed liner notes of all the Noisemakers (including R.S. Hornsby) for “Halcyon Days, and my “Miss Virginia Former” hat signed by Bruce and Ricky. But somehow, all MY treasures seem to pale when I read about all the really neat stuff that ya’ll have collected. Maybe I can find/collect/steal/get something signed at Bay Days?!?!

In all seriousness, as long as he plays what he wants to, Mr. Hornsby’s music is alright with me. Nicos

Amen to that! In fact, that made me remember ANOTHER of my favorite covers.

“Play That Funky Music, White Boy”. It was in concert at the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk, circa 1994. What a hoot!

What, you mean Bruuuce.com isn’t your only concern in the world? 😉 I know it is MY only concern!! I only go to work in order to make money to pay for my Bruuuce habit!

ALL sarcasm aside, Si, please, please take the time you need to get back to normal. God knows I’ve been there myself. Don’t worry about us here on the forum. We can keep ourselves amused chatting with, picking on, and harping on each other. If all else fails, we’ll all just start dancin’ with Nicos!!

Okay, not to beat a dead horse, but….
I have recently been revisiting “Intersections”, and ran across that version of “Candy Mountain Run”. Does anybody know what the intro song is?? Something about the Children of Zion?? Could this lend to us some insight to the song’s true meaning, or is it just another of Bruce’s red herrings??

    Oh, yeah, I forgot.
My favorite cover song by Bruce is undoubtedly “Freebird”.

No, no, I’m just kidding. I really like “Go Back to Your Woods”, but am also fond of “Madman Across The Water”, since Elton was my first really big crush (don’t say it, DPD!). There’s just something about those piano players that I love. I even like to listen to old Floyd Cramer and Jerry Lee Lewis once in a while.

Nicos, I agree that the “Scenes From The Southside” era is one of my favorites. I saw Bruce & the Range perform right after “Night on the Town” came out. Good concert, but sounded like the CD — not overly spontaneous. I also saw him after “Harbor Lights” came out. It seemed like a totally different sound. I love to watch Jimmy Haislip play, and Bruce’s brother, Bobby, even came up on stage to play bass. John Molo was still on drums (I love that man), and Bobby Read was on horns with another guy whose name I can’t remember. Although that era isn’t one of my top favs, I love the songs themselves as played today in concert. Does that make sense? :?: I mean, that’s when my signature song came out. I haven’t heard him play it in concert yet, even though I have requested it at every one of the 4-5 concerts a year I have attended since then. Does that make me a groupie? 😉

I also like your new photo. Much more personable.

Well, I have the tables in my classroom numbered 1-4. I had a kindergarten student ask if I was going to line up the students in “numberbetical order”. This is also the same student who made a President’s Day card for anybody running for president. It said, “Cogrtulshuns, u r a prsdent”. He told me that when I saw someone running for president, I should give it to them. So………when Bill Clinton came to Elon University to campaign for Hilary, I gave it to him. Hope it helps.

I know this isn’t exactly what you were looking for, but it gave me a chance to show off one of my students (tee hee).

Hey, I was just willing to defer my public opinion to The Master Who Knows All. Although, secretly, I still stand by my “anti-drug” theory, and I have many, many examples from the song to back it up. I would only defer THAT theory if I heard it from The Man Himself.

Dave, I’m surprised you haven’t received any backlash over that last post. But I tend to agree with you to some extent. I don’t “get” the Dead much, either. Maybe I’m getting too old, but then, I didn’t get them when I was younger, either. But I have to disagree with your statement about why Bruce played with the band, and here’s why. I think that every artist is influenced by those around him. Listen to the album “Night on the Town”, then listen to the album “Hot House”. Big difference, huh? I think this was close to the time Bruce hooked up with Jerry. I once read an interview from Bruce that said Jerry really encouraged the whole two-handed independence thing. He would tell Bruce, “play this with this hand, now play this with the other hand. Now, can you switch out?” I think the piano solos on “What a Time” from Harbor Lights and “Spider Fingers” from Hot House are phenomenal. Without the Jerry “influence”, we would not have “Sunflower Cat (Some Dour Cat)( I’m Down With That)”. I also think Jerry influenced “White-Wheeled Limousine”, and you have to admit that Jerry’s guitar on “Cruise Control” is something else (is it me, or does R.S. Hornsby sound just a bit like Jerry??)

Here’s a thought — maybe Bruce has railed against drug use so much (and I STILL say that’s what “Candy Mountain Run” is about, I’ll tell why in another post) because of his friend Jerry????? Just a thought.

You seem to be the “local” for Bay Days. How’s it gonna work???? Is there an entrance fee?? Concert fee??? Beer on tap???

    Rich,

Hmmmm, now if Bruce DID read the forum, wouldn’t THAT be cool????

Yes, it would be more handy having him just read our requests here, but that would ruin my whole “Humpy the Bear” history of requests.

    Am stoked for Bay Days!!!!!!

    Hey, Lady!
Been on the look-out for you for oh, so long. Am still jealous of your “bowling” date with Vic. I have yet to meet the gentleman in person….

Don’t suppose you can make the Hampton Bay Days Shows this summer???? I’m aiming for that one. Only 3.5 hours away from me. I am in desperate need of a Noisemakers’ fix. Can’t wait for the weekend after Labor Day!!!

Yes, that WAS thunder in the background. But we all just partied on and enjoyed the light show.

I’m probably going to get raked over the coals for this one, but here goes…

From the first time I heard this song (Candy Mountain Run), I saw it as a railing against drugs. Aren’t drugs referred to as “candy”? And that truly makes the line “every day I die a little” fit with the rest of the song.

Anybody else hear it this way? I’m open to suggestions.

Let me be the first to officially invite you to the next (???) Biltmore show. And I’ll buy the first bottle of Biltmore wine!

Hey, anybody on the site remember the year that those at the head of the line passed around the bottles of Biltmore’s finest????? To quote Bruce, “What a Night”!

Nope, not this summer :( . As you are standing in front of the Biltmore, look to your left. You will see a set of steps going down into a terrace area. Go down those and straight through a little opening in the wall. There is the terrace where the show is performed. The stage is at the back of the terrace area. They usually played colored lights on the Biltmore once it got dark. With the mountains off to the right, it was gorgeous. Only had rain once, but he played on through. Usually just a bit of mountain chill to the air, but almost no bugs! This makes 2 summers in a row without my Biltmo’ fix, and it hurts!!!
