You must forgive them! They just don’t know about the real Beacon! 😆
You also know what I’m talkin bout when I say Bruce would be great playing “Jessica”. Now don’t you?

Lake Lanier, GAPS You coming to Biltmore?
Thanks David 😆 The Beacon’s scoops are pretty good too!
I hope to make it to Biltmore. If I do, I will let you guys know.

ParticipantI have to put my vote with Monica but Aaron could be right too. Could it be both Daily Dose Week with Video? It would be the best of both worlds (no Hannah Montana jokes, please!) 😆

ParticipantHuh,
When I read that Bruce was at the “Beacon”, this was the first place that I thought of.
But I guess that those of you who aren’t from Upstate South Carolina wouldn’t know what that is but it is a pretty famous place ’round here. I love their Chili Cheeseburger A-Plenty. CALL IT!!!

ParticipantIt’s funny. Last night was the first time that I watched American Idol this season (except for the crazy auditions). My oldest daughter said that the guy singing next was singing a Bruce Hornsby song. I expected him to sing “The Way It Is” since most people only know that song. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the piano and he started to sing one of my favorites, “Mandolin Rain”. He was a little creative with the lyrics but he didn’t have time to sing the whole song so he had to “skip to the chase” as it were. I thought that he did a pretty good job. I even remarked that he looks a little like Bruce did when he was young. I hope that maybe he sings another Bruce song when he gets to play the piano. I will have to wait and see I guess.

ParticipantI also would like to publicly extend my condolences to the entire Hornsby family. My thoughts and prayers will be with them.

ParticipantHello, Patrice, welcome to the Bruuuce.com Board.
The song featured in the video (great find, by the way
) is “Song H”. It is on Bruce’s Intersections CD set. If you want to order a copy, you can find it in some music stores or online at sites like Amazon.com. The Amazon.com link to the CD set is at http://www.amazon.com/Intersections-198 … 990&sr=1-1.
I highly recommend the set,if you don’t have it already.

ParticipantI am on the map correctly now. I was surprised to find myself already on it but living in Spain. 😮
I know a little Spanish but not that much! 😆
Let’s see some more Bruuuceheads on the map.
You’ll be glad you did.

ParticipantI would hope that Bruce bails out the “Fortunate Son” especially since he is feeling “Comfortably Numb” because of all of the “Barren Ground”. Maybe Bruce could let him borrow his “Crown of Jewels” so he wouldn’t have to sell “Rainbow’s Cadillac”.

On the other hand…..This song remains the same!(who did that song?)
Have you had your daily dose of Stacked Mary Possum today? 😆
Hey David,
I knew that your keen senses would detect that your name was mentioned..
The song remains the same was done by Led Zeppelin. I had heard the name before but I had to google it to get the name of the band who performed it. 😳
I haven’t had my dose of Stacked Mary Possum yet today but I soon will! Yum! 😆

There is one like it here in Louisville and it is probably the only chance you’ll hear a post-’80s Bruce tune on the radio. While we in Asheville they played a steady rotation of bluegrass, which I felt was the mandatory soundtrack for the area.Yes! The station that you heard was WNCW (you can listen to it online at http://www.wncw.org/). It is a great non-com station that plays a program called “Goin’ Across The Mountain” on Saturdays which is all bluegrass from 11 AM to 7 PM. It is my fav show to listen to on Saturday which drives my wife crazy when we are going somewhere in the car. And you are right about it being the only ststion in the area that plays anything Bruce besides his “Greatest Radio Hits”.
I don’t know if the Biltmore Estate is doing their summer concerts anymore but they seemed really popular when they did have them. I would think that their visitor numbers are down since more people aren’t traveling as much because gas is so da#@ expensive 😡 It would be great if Bruce’s people and the Biltmo’ folks could work out a concert date.

About MerleFest: The mountain setting added much to the atmosphere and you’re right,it is a glorious part of the country. I had such a good time there I would go back again, even if Bruce wasn’t playing (and that’s a bold statement coming from me!) 😯MerleFest sounded great. There is nothing like listening to some great bluegrass music in the smokies. I was out of town when the Bruce and Ricky tour came to my town.
One of the things that I loved and miss about Bruce’s shows at the Biltmo’ is the beautiful mountain setting. Maybe Bruce will come back to MerleFest next year and I can go too. It wouldn’t be too far away for me.

Please don’t send the posse! I really appreciate your generous offer.
I didn’t make my statement to get anyone to buy it for me. I got some gift cards for Christmas that I plan to use to buy Camp Meeting and some other CDs that I have been holding out for. I promise to get my daily dose of Stacked Mary Possum soon! 😆

ParticipantOn thing that I love about Bruce’s music is that it not only makes you think but it also can have different meanings depending on who listens to it. Everybody can find some personal relationship to it.

ParticipantWell after much consideration, here is my top 10 list. As with most of you, I’m sure, it was tough narrowing down my favorites to only 10. Here they are in no particular order*:
Mandolin Rain (bitonal)
The Valley Road (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band version)
The Show Goes On
Fields Of Grey
The Tango King
Fortunate Son/Comfortably Numb
Great Divide (Here Come The Noisemakers CD version)
Gonna Be Some Changes Made
Candy Mountain Run
Crown Of Jewels* I could not include and songs from Camp Meeting since I have not heard them yet other than the samples on Bruce’s site. 😯 😳 Sorry David! I hope to buy the CD soon but $$$ has been really tight this year.

ParticipantThanks for the suggestion David, but I found a way to answer my own question. 😯
If you use Mozilla Firefox, you can download the extension Download Embedded at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1993. Once the extension is installed, just click the little red down arrow in the bottom right corner of the browser and select “download all embedded items” and then let it go. After the dose is downloaded you can then open it in any MP3 player you like.
I hope that this helps other stubborn folks like me.

Rainbow’s Cadillac brings back a very happy memory of mine that you can read about in MVF’s thread “Favorite Concert Moment(s)”.
For a while after Harbor Lights came out, that was all that I listened to. To me, that record marks a turning point for Bruce going from a very pop-like sound to more of the jazzy free-flowing style that he continues to use and evolve today.
What do you guys (and gals) think?

ParticipantI know how to save the Daily Doses with Internet Explorer but I do most of my web surfing these days with Mozilla Firefox. I can set Firefox to open certain sites with IE but I guess that the nonconformist in me doesn’t want to give Microsoft any more play than it already has. Does anyone know how to save the Doses with Firefox?
Thanks,
Larry

ParticipantSorry MVF. I wasn’t at the Biltmo’ when the big fight happened but I did go there in 2004 just after Halcyon Days was released. It was my first time there as well as my first noisemakers show. Needless to say, a good time was had by all!
.
I guess that my most memorable experience was at my first Bruce concert at Freedom Weekend Aloft in Greenville, SC. I went there with my future wife and some friends and we got there a little early. Being a big Brucehead, I recognized the strains of Rainbow’s Cadillac coming from the stage and I thought “Oh crap, the concert has already started!” I rushed to the stage as quickly as I could and looked for a good spot to set up our blanket for the concert. Once I did that and I took a look at the stage, I could see that Bruce was up there playing but the concert hasn’t really started because he kept stopping and talking to people on the stage. I then realized that he was just doing a sound check. 😳 That is when I got a clue about what kind of guy Bruce is that he does his own sound checks instead of chilling out backstage while some roadie does it for him. I probably could have met him since there weren’t many people around and no security at the time, but I was too chicken to do so.
The concert was “da bomb” and it was my first time hearing Bruce’s concert style of playing and mixing up the songs instead of playing them straight off of the record. Since then, I go to every Bruce concert that I can.

ParticipantI guess that you will find that most people that frequent this website have been Bruceheads since he gained national (U.S.) popularity in 1986. I am one of those 21 year fans too. I have followed Bruce through thick (Scenes From The Southside (IMHO)) and thin (Big Swing Face (IMHO)) and still listen to him to this day.
I would have liked to have known him before he made it big from his club days around Wiliamsburg, but I was not so lucky.

ParticipantI haven’t been to very many Bruce shows but each one has been memorable
. I first saw Bruce at a festival in my hometown called Freedom Weekend Aloft in 1992 with my soon to be wife. Next, I saw Bruce at the Biltmore House in 2004, shortly after Halcyon Days came out. It was very different than the first show with all of the Deadhead converts there
. The last time was in 2006 at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. It was my first solo piano concert and I had an excellent seat. The show was awesome and the ending especially was unique (David D. will know what I mean 😆 ). I hope to see Bruce when he comes to the Peace Center this spring, but I will have to see how my $$$ is doing.
So after all of that, I have been to 3 Bruce shows so far…

ParticipantTrent, that is very scary! I don’t think that Bruce would take very kindly to my walking up to his front door and ringing the bell. 😯
David,
I guess that I probably would have done the same thing that you did. My brain would have said that if he didn’t want to be bothered, he would have been hanging out in a public place. But I would have ended up respecting his privacy and left him alone unless he looked up and then I might have said “hi”. I am sure that he would have enjoyed talking to a true road scholar like yourself.
Peace,
Larry

ParticipantDavid,
I am not sure what I would have done either. I would have had a hard time letting this opportunity pass by so I guess that I would have gotten the nerve to go to Bruce and say “Hi” and probably something about the show in Greensboro and the upcoming show in Boone. After that, if it looked like he didn’t want to be bothered, I would have probably left it at that. I don’t think that I would have asked for an autograph. From what I have seen in the past though, Bruce is a very cool
, non-celeb ego kind of guy and not have gotten ticked off at you saying “hi”.
I am interested in what did happen though so don’t keep us in suspense too long…
