OK, swapping between interfaces is driving me crazy. After I read your post, David, I started looking for the “Like” button.

I couldn’t pick a favourite if I spent all day considering it! I guess iTunes gives it away by listing how many times each of them have been played… but I really do like them all.

The Bruuuce.com community is a very creative bunch and I’d like to think that some of the interpretations were put together in ways that wen Bruce would never have seen coming.

With all due respect and gratitude to previous contributors, I think this was my favourite project yet.

See… I don’t contribute, and it’s your favourite!!!! I’m glad I could help out in my small way 🙄 I promise I’ll ruin the next one for you ;)

I’ve been playing it a lot, too. I’ve got a few tracks that I tend to play a bit more than others, but I do really like them all. Do I dare risk mentioning which, or shall I be as reluctant as David and Si are?

I’ve got CDs of a couple of shows from that era. I think one was a radio broadcast from Philadelphia, and the other is a really good recording form Springfield, MA. This is from back when they were touring “one album and a Dead song.” I haven’t listened to them in a while. I’ll have to get the details and make sure that the CD-Rs haven’t deteriorated.

Dave/Si…. we could even do it for free!!! They have a 14-day free trial option (http://www.webex.com/ft/index.php?TrackID=1017640&hbxref=http%3A%2F%2Fwebex.com%2F&goid=webex_ft). Unlimited meetings with up to 25 people attending. Si would just have to use their “record the meeting” feature, or hook his gear into his computer’s audio, to get his raw material for the podcast. I’m liking this more and more….

Wow…you did NOT just compare BH to Peter Cetera and Chicago……………. 👿 Oh no, you did!

But, good point, and one that I think most of us take for granted…BH was kinda initially hard to categorize, as he got played on rock stations, pop stations, adult contemporary, etc. I remember hearing BH hits from the 1st album on my local (at the time) rock station (95YNF, in Tampa) and ALSO on the soft rock station played in the drugstore where I worked after school. P’raps the mid 80s were still a part of that semi-inclusive nebulousness of “roots rock,” “alternative rock,” “album rock,” “smooth jazz,” etc.

But, prejudice aside, we ALL know that Bruce rocks. And he rocks WAY harder than Chicago (and ick, Peter Cetera) EVER did. 😆

    T

I see you got the point, though. It is often impossible to judge a musical outfit by the singles that make it on the radio.

As for the WAY harder… give Chicago’s first 5 albums (especially the Carnegie Hall live set) a relisten. Listen to what Terry Kath does with his guitar. I would suggest that the rhythm section of Chicago (Terry Kath on guitar, Pete Cetera on bass, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Bobby Lamm on keyboards) was as good a core rock band for the late 60s/early 70s as there was. If you must, tune out the horn section and listen to what’s going on behind them. Please don’t judge Peter Cetera by what he did after the “learned how to sing” during that first summer tour with what was left of The Beach Boys. He used to be one a$$-kicking bass player. Unfortunately, he wussed out when he became a power-balladeer. Heck, Bryan Adams used to rock out before the song for the “Robin Hood” movie. Remember when Elton John used to rock out? It’s sad, but it apparently happens to some people. But it doesn’t eliminate the past body of work – it just makes the new stuff not worth buying.

Has anyone else found a dose/doses recently that reminded you of how amazing Bruce’s music is? Which ones?

I was listening to some CDs of some older shows and rediscovered the version of “Sugaree” that Bruce and band did from the Hagerstown, MD show back in 1995. WOW!!! Bobby Reed’s bass clarinet solo just flat out kicked, and the whole band was merrily tagging along with where he and Bruce took the whole thing. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!

Do you know the difference b’tween a gek and a nerd? A “gek” gets the job done! 😆

Rich…..Being the “gek” that you are, check out WebEx. I think that would get the job done! Don’t know bout “set-up costs”, if any, but I know it’s a free download for users once you’re on. Plez shoot me a PM if any set-up costs are involved.

Bruce on computer, speakers and phone is easily accomplished! :D Check it out and let me know! 8-)

I’ve taken a fair number of training classes and attended numerous meetings on WebEx. It seems like a good venue for a Bruceists Chat. I was actually considering having a meeting of my fantasy football league via WebEx. I’ll check it out and let you and Si know. I think Si had suggested Skype, but I’m not as familiar with that as I am with WebEx. When I find out more, I’ll let all know.

So, as not to be a hypocrite, p’raps I ought to listen to, urg, AMBROSIA?
I’ll get around to it in May. Maybe this May, maybe May ’11…know what I’m saying?

    😆

I’ll being my investigations this weekend. If I find anything of merit to support the description Mr. Hornsby offered forth, I’ll make a point of turning the group on to it. Heck, it wasn’t that long ago that someone gave me a CD full of tracks from the Aussie band, The Church, and I was pleasantly dispelled of my notion that most of their music was on the same lines of the hit single, “Under The Milky Way”, that many of us probably know. Of course, I started with actually liking that song a lot, so the journey wasn’t too surprising.

BTW… how do we describe Bruce’s music to someone who only knows of him through the earliest hit singles? They were great songs, but he got typecast as “soft rock”, and we all know that’s bunk. I do the same when describing the early Chicago albums to someone who has only heard “If You Leave Me Now” and “Baby What A Big Surprise” and Pete Cetera’s solo hits.

As one who lives in aforementioned state (a.k.a. “commonwealth”), I can tell you that folks here aren’t all that happy with the proclamation, either. Oh sure, some are, but I guess that’s their thing.

One of the unfortunate backlashes that I’ve seen in some of the other online discussion forums, particularly replies to the posting of the news item by the Daily Press (our local news rag), is that some people are saying that it’s not anywhere near as racist as having “Black History Month” and such. So, maybe, festering under the surface, there is something to some of the out-of-state commentary. I hope not.

Personally, I see no harm in paying attention to history. The initial idea behind Black History Month was that there were significant contributions to our society and culture that had been made by a certain ethnic group that has historically been downplayed as having nothing worthwhile to offer. Regardless of the merits of demerits of that, I think it unwise for Virginia, which such a rich history going back to 1607 to overemphasize the events of such a very short period of time, especially when they didn’t go so well. And yet, I would hate to be ignorant of anything significant from that era, so I am confused on this.

What I DON’T want is for this to turn into a way of trumpeting the post-war racism that we should duly be ashamed of, and of somehow whitewashing it (borrowed phrase) into appearing as though it were somehow a good thing.

    More thoughts later…. maybe

    Si,

You cracked me up with your description of David Day :) Yeeeeeeeeeeeah… he’s a shy one.

However… there ARE avenues available that might accomplish his goal of getting everyone together for a live Q&A type of thing. There are many internet sites that function as virtual meeting facilities, gotomeeting.com, etc. that allow for both audio and video connection, as well as text chat and the ability to do mass presentations. It might be somewhat of an undertaking, but maybe something like that could be engineered as a sort of annual “Bruuuce.com Convention”. I’m still thinking it out, but it is an interesting idea.

I’m sorry. I missed that. When I first saw the subject, I thought, “hmm… bruuuce.com toys? this could be dangerous and/or interesting.” I was wondering how you’d handling the licensing for Noisemakers Action Figures. Hey!!! That gives me an idea for a fun and somewhat off-beat question to throw at Bruce: “If some enterprising manufacturer were to come out with Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemaker Poseable Action Figures, which one of you would have the Kung-Fu Grip?”

Actually, it’s because we’re getting to the exciting part of the hockey season. Once the playoffs are done in June, then… baseball season will be in full swing until the World Series in October. But after that… uh… football season, which will take us up until hockey seasons starts getting really good again. I’m sorry. What was the question? Oh yeah… dominant females? So “get me a beer” isn’t an appropriate or safe reply?
