Lake Lanier, GABonnie Raitt for VP. That would give them something to talk about. The campaign sloagn could be “We can’t make you love us, and that’s just the way it is.”
I would hope that the UK would make Si Twining the Ambassador to the US during a Hornsby administration.

I found it amazing that my five year old son Junior found a preference with Bruce’s music.I put the older One Night On the Town DVD and Junior says to me…That is too slow, I want the fast one. Meaning he prefered the Three Night On The Town DVD with the Noisemakers over the One Night On The Town with the range.
Its amazing to me a five year old would have the ear for rhythm. 😯
Whats your Preference???????
That’s pretty cool that your son is developing his own pereferences and taste at 5!
I like them both, but my preference is still the original on the Night On The Town album.
This song is typical of a lot of Bruce’s songs – it is possible to hear soooo many different ways of performing the song. At times, I thought that it would be a great song to do as a slow old-timey acoustic blues song, maybe with a slide guitar thrown in. Think of the version of The Way It Is that Cruize Henderson did on the Shadow Hands project, and you’ll get kind of what I was thinking, except maybe with a little more chunky acoustic guitar at times.

It’s called Megan Metcalfe- Live From The Bunker.
If you’re interested, check it out.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks for listening!
Megan MetcalfeMegan!!! I downloaded this from napster.com yesterday! I haven’t given it a full and in-depth listen yet, but what I did hear was absolutely exquisite! You’ve got quite a voice, and the musicians you work with are excellent. Congratulations on a job well done. Once I give it a few more whirls, I’ll give the rest of these folks a track-by-track on it. To the rest of you: GET THIS RECORD. IT’S WONDERFUL!!!!! And the picture on the cover artwork is pretty cool, too!

It’s hard to be a Prozac Baby once you’ve visited the Opium Den………….Now, I’m perplexed. When I meet Dave face to face, should I be so brazen as to start the conversation with “Hi”?

Lake Lanier, GAYeah, if nothing else, you could probably beg your way into the chords or a tab for the tune, and then piano-fake your way from there.

ParticipantThanks to my wife remembering my birthday, I added a couple of new CDs to the rotation. If you haven’t heard the new Coldplay CD, Viva La Vida, yet… do. I love Coldplay’s sound anyhow, but the added touch of Brian Eno doing his thing as producer makes it all the better. The other newbie in the rotation is James Taylor’s Covers CD. I’m really digging his versions of “Summertime Blues” and Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away”, but I think the gem on this one is his rendition of “Wichita Lineman“. That song is perfect for his voice.

ParticipantMy favorite song of his is “Silver Thunderbird” from his first album. It’s a very touching little paean to his dad’s favorite car. Great hook for the refrain:
-
[list:73720]Don’t gimme no Buick
Son, you must take my word
If there’s a God in heaven,
He’s got a Silver Thunderbird,
You can keep your Eldorados,
and the foreign car’s absurd.
Me I wanna go down
in a Silver Thunderbird[/list:u:73720]

ParticipantPersonally, I think having music start playing at a musician’s site is pretty appropriate. What REALLY bugs me is the sites that have video clips that automatically play when you get to the site’s main page. If I want to immediately go to another page, it slows the whole flippin’ thing down. For example, ESPN’s web site. I go there because I play in a fantasy football league through ESPN. The page that I have to sign in through is their fantasy football main page. When the page loads, the stupid streaming video with their “insider tips” automatically plays, and it slows down the whole sign-in process. Then, after I sign in, the page refreshes and the stupid video starts all over again. Egads, man! What’s with that? I guess if I had a faster computer, it wouldn’t be such a pain in the butt, but I don’t, so it is.
OK… rant du jour is done

Some great, and I must add “soft” two hand independence! Refreshing!
Wonderful!
Two hand independence with a feminine touch and a soothing voice. Very nice takeoff on a old familiar childhood song too!

ParticipantDavid Day wrote:Rich, how creative! How in the h@!! did you do the strings & horn sections? The ending is a very nice touch!I cheated on the strings. The cheap little Yamaha keyboard that I got for $50 about 10 years ago had the exact string sounds I was looking for, so I used that.
I did, however, play the oboe at the end of the string passage, and I yanked out my old trumpet from school marching band days for the horn parts and used the recording software to drop a couple of octaves on the part that sounds like a tuba line. I also played what sound like clarinet lines on a little plastic recorder, and buried it in effects to make it melt in with the rest. The flute line was a pain. I desperately hacked away at part for a couple of days until I got it right once, and then copied and pasted like a crazy man. The drums were strange. I used that same Yamaha keyboard for that, but had to play around with the mixing software to try to make it sound like a whole line of drums.
I wish that part had come out the way I originally envisioned it. I had this goofy idea of having a marching band come through the middle of the song, going from left to right in the stereo mix – just to be strange and not what you’d expect. I think the idea hit me when I was listening to the Quadrophenia album and heard the little snippet of a marching band between songs. My thought was, “hey, that’s cool, but would anyone expect a marching band to sneak it’s way through during of the song??”
The morse code and the ending bit with the footsteps were last-minute afterthoughts. The morse code spells out “here comes the chill”, and the end part is from an old VHS tape I took when I visited Montreal back in the early 90s and was getting on the subway.
I’m glad you liked it. It didn’t come out as crisp sounding as I had hoped it would. Maybe one of these days I’ll pony up for some really good audio software.

ParticipantVery cool stuff. I’m really digging on all of these tracks. Dave Rich, Megan Metcalfe, and Harm van Sleen never cease to amaze me with their work, and the guys in TWII sound like they’re having way too much fun

The word out is that Bruce is involved in a new tribute CD of Michael Jackson songs, tentatively called “Beat This”, and he’s chosen to do a version of “Rockin’ Robin” . It should be out by Christmas. The most intriguing track, based on the previews, is Ben Folds performing the most beautiful love song ever written about a rat, “Ben”.

“Maybe we would like him so” – in sneaking up on boo.
he’s also very fond of adjectives – “so curious, so secretly” – in the road not taken,- they dont really convey much extra to the tale,- but they do add a certain Hornsbiness to the song..
Of course then there’s a fair smattering of local landmarks mentioned,- I wonder what the total is of his whole catalogue…..?

Dave,
You got me to thinking…..
I keep reading about how there are Beatles Landmarks tours in London and Liverpool. I wonder if we could come up with a lit of Bruce Hornsby Landmarks in this area that would make for a fun tour. I need to do further research to find out exactly where this “roadside trailer” is that Bruce so affectionately referred to in “Down The Road Tonight.”
