What to you is the Bruce Hornsby sound that makes him so unique.
To me it’s the combination of folky/jazzy riffs and the piano with the synth pad in behind it. That’s what immediately made me listen and really love what what going on.
What do you find in Bruces music that makes it so special?
Is it the piano, is it the synth? is it the live band (personally I think they’re nuts not to push this more, search you tube for bruce hornsby and you’ll get a lot of older stuff which doesn’t show bruce at his best IMO).
There’s a lot in Bruces stuff,- but you always know it’s Bruce.. why?. discuss
Kind regards

To me, it’s a combination of the piano and the lyrics. It’s hard to put it into words, but my best stab at it would be to say that you can tell from both that he’s put a lot of thought into them, has something to say, and says it very eloquently. In many respects, that it even more true with the instrumental work than with the vocal work, although the lyrics are intensely thought-provoking and honest, too. Maybe that’s it — he plays a very honest piano where what he’s playing comes from a special place inside of him and speaks directly to me.
Thanks, Dave… that is one of the hardest things to put into words. I know I did a hideous job of it, but that may be the best I can do without further prodding.

Well, imagine trying to focus on teaching 16 first graders while “Eat Your Fred” keeps playing over and over in your mind. Not to mention the fact tthat I tend to hum, and “White Rabbit” may not be the most appropriate tune for my students to be hearing. Oh well. It beats “Froggy Went a Courtin'”…………..Were there any kids in the class named Barney, Wilma, or, dare we suggest… Fred?

Lake Lanier, GAWhy do I get images of some scene out of a Disney animated feature when I read that? Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, man!
I can’t believe it hasn’t leaked out any more than the brief mention I made in another thread, but I can GUARANTEE you all that you will enjoy it! Our friend, Si, has indeed been a busy man, and he is about to unleash upon us the fruits of his considerable labours, and there will be plenty of high-quality fruit to pick. Like the ad on TBS says, “there’s nothing quite like October baseball.”

Thanks so much for finding and posting this…I owe you one big favor. This should count as your good deed for today. Actually,it should cover several days worth of kind acts.
I think I might skip the singing along, though. I’m sure the people on the city bus I ride to work each morning already think I’m not quite “all there” when my face bursts into an uncontrollable grin upon hearing a favorite Bruce song on my mp3 player! 😆
Thanks again,Rich.

Does anyone remember the old Saturday Night Live commercial for the medicine Triopenin? This discussion reminds me of that great it of comedy.

ParticipantThanks for the topic, Vic. It’s hard to forget.
Here’s something I did a number of years ago. I was fascinated with the worldwide news coverage of this sad event, so I threw together this web page: http://members.cox.net/rdiakun/frontpages.htm

ParticipantGood luck, Monida, and any and all affected by this. I guess I feel kinda silly for whining about the non-event that was Hanna wiping out Bay Days. You’re getting “the real thing” there, and they can be scary. Please make safety you first priority, and we’ll all pray that you get through it safely and that everything is relatively intact when you get home.

ParticipantAnd a might storm it was, indeed. We’ve had afternoon thunderstorms roll through in the summer that were more threatening. It turns out that Hanna was a wuss after all. At least I got to meet Dave and his lovely wife, although I missed meeting up with folks at The Taphouse. From what Dave told me, I must’ve arrived mere minutes after everybody else left. Heck, I probably almost ran them over trying to find a parking spot. Let’s do this again, except maybe this time, we could have a show.

I’m thinking, weather permitting of course, that the TapHouse is still on?
I could go for that… assuming Dominion Virginia Power and their iffy lines cooperate.

P.S. This sucks.

ParticipantThe weather forecast is scaring me. Last night, speculation had it (from several local tv station weatherpeople) that the eventual remnants of TS Hannah might bring us rain from Midday Saturday through all of Sunday. Another forecast I heard had the rain being here Friday through Saturday morning. I’ll guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

ParticipantMVF wrote:Hey, Guys, I’ve had a brainstorm of sorts….okay, maybe a flurry…. shut up, David……Anyway, my OTHER career (since teachin’ don’t pay) is beading jewelry. I was playing around with some alphabet beads today, and came up with a little seed-bead bracelet that says “Me So Hornsby”. I also made one that says “Bruuuce.com”. I thought they were kinda cute, and so wondered if anybody else going to Bay Days would be interested. Mine are made with turquoise beads, but I could take orders for any color or combination of colors (like college colors) you like. I’d have to charge a couple of bucks to cover materials — but I would NEVER profit off my SiBs and BiBs. So let me know if this is something you might be interested in, or should I take my one-of-a-kind Bruuuce jewelry and go jump in the lake?????
I think it’s an amazingly wonderful idea!

ParticipantSpeedsk8er wrote:Curious to hear stories of others who shun Bruce’s stuff.I try not to associate with heathen like that
I do agree with you that Bruce’s overall popularity is a victim of what is andn isn’t presented on radio. I guess that’s pretty much true all across the music business. To some people, he might be in the “Where Are They Now?” category, whereas there are those of us who are hooked on the music he makes and anxiously wait for the next release/tour like a bunch of crack addicts waiting for the next fix. (“Wow!”, he though to himself, “this is really quite disjointed. Get to the freaking point, man. That is, of course, assuming you actually have one! Jeez! And what’s with the crack analogy?”) I’ve long since come to terms with the fact that I am no longer a member of what is known in the radio biz as “the prime demographic.” The music business is no longer concerned with my tastes and preferences, and I’m actually quite good with that. I have the time and attention span to learn to appreciate good music, even if it isn’t the flavor of the month, and to seek out more good music. I’ve got all the stinky little pop tunes I could ever want in my MP3/CD/LP collection (Yes… I actually have an MP3 of Tin Tin’s one hit, “Toast And Marmalade For Tea”, so I do have a soft spot for stinky little pop tunes), so I don’t need any more of the formulaic garbage that sells product to the prime demographic. From Hornsby, I get something more than “songs” – I get intelligent and well-thought-out “music”, and I find it stimulating both intellectually and emotionally. And there’s plenty to “just tap your toes” to, as well. (“Yo, Rich,” said that voice in my head again, “Do you actually have a point, or are you just foaming at the keyboard?”) I guess it just boils down to where you are in your life, what you’re looking for from music, what your tastes happen to be, and what turns you on. Like I said earlier, I try not to associate with heathen who don’t dig Bruce’s music
I much prefer the heathen that DO dig his music!

I have an idea! 💡
Why not make the Taphouse the “Bruuuce Bay Days Watering Hole” for all occasions?
Come on Saturday night for the meet-up, Sunday before the show and the meet-after for “The Left Overs” after the show! How does that sound for a plan?
That way, all Bruceheads, Bruuucies, Hornies, Road Scholars, Road Warriors and “The Left Overs” will know where to go without confusion! 😆
David Day
Lake Lanier, GAI like David’s idea. Whether or not The Taphouse is jam-packed and we can’t get in, we should at least attempt to meet there. I’ll give the Taphouse folks a call and see if they can hook us up, although during Bay Days weekend, I’m not so sure how flexible they’ll be. What’s a good time to meet on Saturday? 7:00? 8:00?
