I love the Range shows where Bruce goes off on his long rap at the beginning of “Down The Road Tonight” to let everyone in on the tawdry tale behind the tune. He seemed to have a lot of fun doing that bit. He should yank that old chestnut out some day, complete with the Range-era storytelling. Fun stuff.

She got up. She was a big woman. A big woman.
Her name was Bertha. Bertha Butt. She was one of the Butt sisters.
He didn’t care. He looked up at her and said: ‘

The man sure has sent plenty of crimson fish at us over the years! That’s part of what makes the ride so much fun. I’ll have to check out that Candi Mountains’ Run on Intersections and then make up something even stranger, uh, er, tell you what I think it might be.

I am referencing 1993 – 1996 only, or his first two solo efforts and the band. We all know the stuff from that era well.

That is one of my favorite eras of Bruce’s touring band, as well. I guess the only real difference between that era’s band and the one of today is the lack of John D’earth and Debbie Henry, the addition of Doug Derryberry, and changes in drummers. So, we’re not talking about a LOT of personnel changes (OK, he went through a lot of drummers), but the shift from having the trumpet and soulful background vocals and no guitar to having guitar and not the rest — that’s kind of a seismic shift in what your sound is.

No, no, I’m just kidding. I really like “Go Back to Your Woods”, but am also fond of “Madman Across The Water”, since Elton was my first really big crush (don’t say it, DPD!). There’s just something about those piano players that I love. I even like to listen to old Floyd Cramer and Jerry Lee Lewis once in a while.

Wouldn’t it be a gas if, in the middle of some really funky jam, Bruce started throwing out signature Floyd Cramer licks at us?

Nice updated pic, nicos. You’re smiling almost as much as Mr. Stacked Mary Possum Day above you! Hmm… there‘s a new holiday we could get Hallmark to declare… Stacked Mary Possum Day (wanna spearhead that effort, David?).

I agree, nicos, the bunch in here is so deeply into this stuff that merely picking tunes and ordering them is an impossible task. We know the lyrics, we know the music, and we have different things about each track that we do or don’t like. Some are favorite jams, some are favorite lyrical phrases, some are great stories, some are.. well, you know what I mean. I think we’d probably kill poor Si if we were to suggest to him that he run separate polls on each category – we might have so many categories that it would overwhelm his server!

I have a Noisemaker tease of it somewhere. I recall a guy in the crowd requesting it as a joke and the band played a bit of the intro – JT’s organ is the main part I remember. I don’t know what show it was from and I don’t have it notated on any setlist. Others probably have the show since I got almost all of my shows off bt.etree, but I’ll shuffle some live Bruce on my Zune and see if it comes up.

I’m sure you have the Zappa cover. Ludwig Von 88 had one of the more interesting covers I’ve heard. I also think I have a marching band recording of it somewhere… if you’re into that sort of thing.

Ooh! I hope you can find that. I’d really appreciate it.

The FZ and the Ludwig Von 88 and the Dread Zeppelin and lots of other versions can all be found in MP3 format at: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/05/stairways_to_he.html. There are about 100 of them, plus an MP3 of some guy doing a diatribe about how satanic the song is if you play it backwards, and then he goes off onto KISS and The Beatles and such. Quite an interesting period piece. All 100+ Mp3s fit on a regular CD (data format) with plenty of extra space to spare. Y’all’ll (is that a real woid?) get a kick out of some of them. My faves are the versions by Dolly Parton, The Beatnix (an early-period Beatles cover band from Australia) and another Aussie band doing covers of Doors tunes.

Jackie, you really should check out what Loudon Wainwright III has been up to recently. He’s definitely come a long way from Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road. He may be the best of a very good lot of folks plying the acoustic singer-songwriter trade.

The Good Ship Venus tune is from a 2006 CD called Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys. A number of people had a shot at some of the nearly 50 traditional (and rather bawdy) tunes on the 2-CD set. Lots of good fun, as long as you’re not either very prim and proper or near little kids who might ask questions.

I found that while trying to get my head inthe right place for the Blackbeard Festival that is going to be in Hampton in a few weeks. A few years ago, I learned form one of the late night balladeers at that festival that there were far more verses to Barnacle Bill The Sailor than I had every imagined possible. Aaarrrrrrrgh!
