Oh well, time to move on.

Hmmm. Begs the question — on a comment board — of what “an unnecessary comment” is. Especially when many of us aren’t really thrilled about the new guys. But that’s a different issue, one that again begs the question…on a comment/fan board…of what “an unnecessary comment” is.
Maybe I should post some Youtube shit of me rocking BH tunes. Would that be unnecessary?
What is “unnecessary,” when you really think about it?

Having said that — it’s RARE that you NOT see some joker (or two) with an actual TV cam at an outdoor “show” in the Tampa area. Why? Cable access, of course! 😆

ParticipantHighway_61, post: 9333, member: 317 wrote:I still cannot “get with” how people chatter incessantly during concerts.Yeah, the ambient chatter WAS pretty bad.
Here’s the thing to remember — the crucial term is “concert.” B&NMs are seen playing (here) at “The Taste of Pinellas,” which is a foodshow for Johns Hopkins/All Children’s Hospital in St Pete…where the music is perhaps charitably (no pun intended) meant to be of the “pleasant background variety while people eat ribs, seafood, watermelon, etc and the kids play in the ‘family zone’.” Probably not the show to go to if you wanted to see B&NMs stretch out, get their grooves on, get “out there,” etc. As such, with people milling about, snacking and drinking, they’re most likely NOT gonna be that into the acts…hence the chatter.
Bruce had the pleasure of appearing with (add your own snark) Loverboy, Pat Benatar & Neil Geraldo (talented indeed, but a little past their prime, perhaps?), KC & The Sunshine Band (which FL event DON’T they play at?), and the Jim Belushi/Aykroyd edition of The Blues Brothers.
http://www.tasteofpinellas.com/
I’d hazard a guess to say that this gig was seen as a good payday and a chance to get a little road seasoning on the new guys. Bona fide concerts (at actual venues with tix paid by fans to see the group later this summer) will probably feature less chit-chat.

Forget what I said about (which was mostly good) Bob and Doug (but still, git/sax guys ARE numerous)…these two latest NM are not my cup o’ tea. Sorry Bruce. I know that you and the new dudes don’t give a shit but damn…a Mumford & Sons backup and a Stevie Ray clone? Really? Wow.
Here’s hoping that I’m proved wrong and BH comes up with some crazy new reinterpretations of tunes, and just plain ol’ new tunes too! (I can also get where BH might’ve been coming from regarding the same band for at least a decade.)
For some perspective, it might be worthwhile delving into any bandleader and his/her touring/recording band members — lots of flux, lots of comings/goings. I’m thinking of Mingus and Zappa in particular, and BH. Perhaps the clips (Droll/Holmes) that were posted were the best available?

If there’s one thing we all should know by now, it’s this — Bruce loves to throw his “fans” sliders. Not curveballs, but sliders.
The last such time he did so was probably with “Big Swing Face” and that was, what with no piano and its pseudo-electronica/funk direction, probably a hard slider. (It was also the very definition of a “one-off.”) But now? Not so much. This is kinda like people complaining about “Camp Meeting” (Wanna have some fun? Go to Amazon and read the idiotic reviews from people who “just want Bruce to sing!”) Jazz to bluegrass to classical to r&b to pop etc etc.; everything that BH likes to do. This is surprising?Bob and Doug — They’re great players and quite adept at the genre-jumping BH required…but sax guys and guitar players are a dime a dozen. This is not to diminish in any way their contributions and time-served. Hey, how about that George Marinelli? Is anyone upset that he’s still gone? (What’s more interesting IMHO is how JT, JV, and Sonny interact with the new dudes, which brings up…)
“As I’ve gotten older I’m more of a folkie than a jazzer,” THIS is a bit worrisome (as more of a rock/jazz/pop/classical-with-the-bluegrass-as-a-garnish dude myself) but probably shouldn’t be — again, see BH’ diverse palette. However — are Sonny, JT and JV on-board with this? How “folkie” will it be? (Can’t really see those three being down with, as BH used to joke, a possible nomination/win for the Ebony/Jet bluegrass chair.) Notice that BH is touring with Sonny (what are they gonna do, a cool half-hour of “out” improv!?) as an opener for Metheny’s Unity Band (NOT “folkie” LOL) and then the Weir dates (also NOT “folkie”)…the “folkie” thing can be caricatured any which way you want, but only until the material (new and/or reinterpretations) gets aired out will we be able to properly judge.
In any case, this bullshit is probably pointless — ‘cuz BH is gonna do what BH wants to do.
If we go along for the ride, so be it. If not, maybe we’ll catch him down the road…

ParticipantThe AMG does NOT have the “Halcyon Days — Value Added For Tower” live bonus tracks “Darling Be Home Soon” (Lovin’ Spoonful) and “Play It All Night Long” (Zevon) listed. It does have “Changes Made” listed, but not as a live single.
Was just browsing iTunes and the Zevon track popped up; as far as I was aware, it was only available as an intro to “Valley” on the Munck download from Portland OR ’05.

ParticipantHa.
He mentioned the same thing (see the Goon’s anecdote) at either the Keene show or the Rutland one; seemed like it was tied in to a complaint about “how come you don’t sound the same anymore.” “Play it like ‘The Range’ played it.” “I don’t like this improv bit” etc etc. That’s when he chuckled to the audience and referenced The Range — “People say they miss ‘The Range’ but the funny thing is that ‘The Range’ was mostly just me with a drum machine and an OBX” or some such. He’d have Marinelli do some overdubs, other people do some dubbage, but yeah…apparently BH gets a kick out of that particular artifice.

ParticipantI’ve heard that one.
But he also says (on another of the Munck shows) that “Big Swing Face” was “the best” they’ve ever done, and that that’s why it was ignored in the marketplace or some such. So it’s “the best” vs. his fave which certainly aren’t/don’t have to be the same thing.
My personal fave is “Halcyon Days” (is that still noted w/this new format, SiTwi?) — it has a consistent sound/feeling, and a very pronounced psychedelic quality to it. It also is the ONLY one of his studio albums that I can play all the way through without skipping a tune.

ParticipantI don’t have the fortitude of the Guinness Goon — never have, never will. Particularly now that I’m approaching my dotage.
Furthest to see Bruce: From Bratt to Boston solo. Going down not too bad, coming back was a bitch. Had to actually slap myself a couple of times, and crank Zeppelin’s “Presence,” then “In Through The Out Door.”
Runners up would include Tampa to Jacksonville (return trip) for Metallica 1992 (I drove from Gainesville back to Tampa) and Fishbone 1994 (return trip) Gainesville to Tampa. Both of those return journeys (pun intended) took place after midnight and solo. Hard-ass shit.
None of that is meant to be bragging. Far from it; I’ve never been one to be able to endure long slogs to see musical acts. I draw the line at around 2.5 hours….otherwise I’d be going postal on some peeps….
Yours truly,

I’ll see you at the Northampton show…your bit about “good food” assumes both that there is any in Northampton and that we like such things. Not to mention that we would agree on what constitutes the above…
Can’t make it to “Kaunkid” — bit too far to drive (or that I feel like driving, rather) and that day is the better half’s b-day…oh well. And no, she’s not crazy about Bruce, so that wouldn’t work… LOL

Participanttreah, post: 8630 wrote:Bruce that his solo shows sell more tickets than the band shows. This really astonished me. Does anyone have any theories as to why this is so?Hmmmmm, yes! Or maybe…
He’s said this a couple of times and each time I just kinda let it pass as “Hmmmm, that’s interesting…” and then away it goes…
But NOW I DO wonder why. Is it just the case that the casual concert-goer is just SO into nostalgia and carbon-copyism that he/she gets flummoxed when he/she reads “…and the Noisemakers” instead of “…and The Range”? Ya know, like “Whut the hail? Who the HAIL are ‘The Noisemakers’? I wurnt the Range, gotdammit!” LOL
Or maybe the solo gigs’ corresponding venues are a bit smaller than than larger theaters/parks/arenas/hockey rinks? Are the fan combos leaning more towards people of “that type” who are into seeing solo shows, but not the full band experience and all that that entails? Dunno, but it IS interesting.
I like ’em both…

Not to be cheeky, but this is from the link —
“Creating an authentic Jackson Browne / Bruce Hornsby experience will be the wonderful line up of Bernie Segedin, Sam McNally, Angus Steventon, Peter Northcote, Mark Costa, Clare O’Meara and Johnnie Waller(MD).”
It’s not posted because it’s not a Bruce gig, it’s a cover band gig. Not to put too fine a point on it or anything…

Wasn’t BH mentioning that a Skaggs/Hornsby live album was in the offing? Thus a reason for a tour…
I’d definitely go see the S/H hoedown; not the biggest fan of bluegrass, but DO appreciate it (my teenage git teach was/is a touring picker/grinner, so that influenced me a bit). Would be cool to see/hear a different set from Bruce.
Maybe the Goon could forget about that 5hr. travel limit of his and motor to the NE area for a meet-up. Ya never know…

Excellent write-up, almost a standard-bearer if I may be so bold…
The SF>Q&A>ELK you all got makes me very, very envious…I could be wrong, but I think that BH has a clip of the Schoenberg/”Paperboy” number up on his Vimeo site.

Yeah mon, let us know. I’m ashamed to say that I hadn’t visited the ol’ PopDose in a while, but now that you’ve reminded me it’s as if a breath of fresh air has been (re)injected into my ‘net wanderings/yearnings for “that one cool site where I don’t feel like barfing.” I know, cold comfort, but still…LOL
“Invisible”: made the better half watch “World’s Greatest Dad” a few months ago, and she actually enjoyed it. Hearing that particular tune reminds me of the flick, hence the mention. If any of you BH fanatics have yet to see it, shame on youse. It IS strong stuff, tho — be advised.

Ha! Same shit hap’d to moi back when the Keene/Rutland shows rolled around: came home from the Keene show, wrote a long-ass review, hit submit, only to discover I’d been logged out and the rev was GONE! Wrote the 2nd that morning, but alas, the feeling (and long-windedness) had evaporated……..
Any more deets on that Spike flick (remake of a Korean violent potboiler called “Oldboy”)? I tried to get him to play some of that when he was here, but as I noted, he dissed all of my reqs both nights. LOL
“Bird Music” is “Reveil des Oiseaux” (pretty sure), a 1953 work by Messiaen.
Did you scandalize BH with more of your insults re. Jerry Wannabe? Heh. Hit me up offy so we can gossip ’bout that and de ol beisball…

ParticipantWow. $230 for a (seller’s) copy at Barnes and Noble.com and around $400 for the same at Crapazon. Geez, I’m glad I got mine when I did…probably about 2/3 years ago from B&N. The transcriptions are impeccable and mind-blowing; between this one and the (also out-of-print) Frank Zappa Guitar Book (transcribed by BH’s fellow Berklee-ite Steve Vai) I’ll be busy until I die…
The Bruce book also features a hilarious intro by the man himself wherein he blames all transcription errors on JT. LOL
I feel for ya — I tried to order the “Hot House” book from BH.com and was apparently beaten to the punch by someone on this very board. Arg.
All hope is not lost, however — MusicNotes.com has 3 pages of BH, and not just the Tupac covers of “Way.” I downloaded “Stander,” “Swing Street,” “Hot House Ball,” Spider F,” etc. Discounts on multiple purchases! No, I’m not affiliated w/them….

It seems, again, SEEMS, ‘cuz I still have yet to go back and actually do a dummy’s analysis, but the setlists have lacked, ahem, “deep diversity.” By which I mean the deeper album cuts aren’t repped as much…plus it does feel like BH trots out “P Dog Town” any chance he can, and the spontaneous ad libs/attention to written requests are getting short-shrift. This is just an off-the-cuff and entirely hasty generalization, I admit…
Yes, defenders of the BH flag, he is STILL the best in town. No question. We’re just saying that the deep cuts are not getting stage time, thas’ all. Don’t hate the playa, hate the game…by that token, maybe BH is just getting tired of trying to bridge the great divide (too easy) between the poseurs and the hardcore…………
