    “Hooray For Tony”?

Sorry to be pedantic, but did BH change the lyrics to “Hooray For Tom,” or is it a new tune?

Or did someone make a mistake? :D

    Yes, it could’ve been me,

    Bounty —

Would be hard for a lot of us (those of us who were not at the show) to help you out…. 😆

Setlists are subject to that good ol’ “feast or famine” thang, you know what I mean?

Typically, BH throws in “That Would Be Something” or “Brokedown Palace” or “Row Jimmy”…if it’s not just “Muddy.” But you might know that, and he might’ve been doing something else. Hence the setlist would be cool. :D

Also, I Googled the show and got this —

Hey Guinness Goon, I’m pretty sure that that’s NOT the John Thomas in that Beefheart pic! ;)

Cool find if that is him, because of such a short of stint he had with that band, it would be surprising.

Pretty sure that’s JT — it looks like him, and if the zealots at the Radar Station are to be believed (Van Vlietians are, for the most part, even MORE fanatical than Zappologists, assuming that their info is also correct, tee hee), well, there ya go… 😆

    Plus, didja see this comment:

‘unknown bearded person – possibly John Thomas”

That is John “J.T.” Thomas. I knew him during this time period and have a few pics of him.

The posters are mentioning that this is a cover for the still-unreleased “BatChainPuller” lp, which (my Beefheart history is not as good as my Zappa history, despite this cross-pollination) I believe was bound up in Zappa suing another manager, or Van Vliet and FZ not getting along again, or some such shit. As for JT, wasn’t he hired, then fired for doing the sidegroup Mallard, then re-hired to record “BatChain”?

I would be very interesting to know…wonder if any eyes reading this could pass it on. Gossipy music fans (like me! :D ) would LOVE to get some inside dope…. 😆

Yeah Matt, anytime you want to write some more in-depth articles, knock yourself out. 😆 It’s a pleasure to read stuff “for the fans in-the-know, by a fan-in-the-know.” Reminds me of the good ol’ days of various music ‘zines…without being TOO obsessive. :D

Must be nice to get those promos, huh? Whenever you wanna pass those on, feel free to let me know! BTW, the Pop Dose site looks interesting; again, a pleasure to find something that touches on a variety of popular culture and etc, with depth. Too many sites are obviously for the younger reader (nothing wrong with that 8-) ) or, referencing the more pop-oriented, are too heavily skewed (vis a vis Hornsby) towards neo-Deadish followers (Phish, etc).

What was the free album released in 2007? Where can I download that?

It was a “special holiday treat” from BH to “his fans,” whoever they might be. 😆 It was available for download at his old site, and not available any more, ‘cept for maybe filesharing, etc. Oh, and p’raps a couple are on the “Bride”?

The tunes were collected from the Summer ’07 jaunts to St. Louis and Apple Valley, MN I believe…

“Down The Road Tonight” — I guess I’ve been fortunate; seen him do this one twice.

“Swing Street” — As for this smokin’ lil’ numba, I’ve worked references into at least two requests, and ain’t got it. Oh well, there’s always the next time, right? 😆

Yeah, I’ll second that…thanks for the link.

The cover kills me — the same bizarro mock-serious tone of Charlie H’s mug on “Spirit Trail.” Coulda been presented a tad sillier, but this way is both provocative AND more giggle-inducing.

The 429 site is a bit screwy; it says that the BH page is “Gin Blossoms” (phew!), and the track list for the album samples is all jumbled and mislabeled. One example — the track entitled “intro/Bobby Read” is actually a Bruce solo piece (one that sounds VERY SUSPICIOUSLY like Carter’s “Catenaires” 😮 ) that leads into “Talk.” Whatevs…I got goose bumps.

Unfortunately, no release date is noted… :(

    T

    P.S. Catenaires! 8-)

You forgot Marinelli, Hornsby’s original six-string strangler! And John Bigham (Miles Davis prodigy and former member of LA ska/funk rockers Fishbone), who’s all over “Harbor Lights.” And Kimock, who’s a bit indistinct and ethereal on, what, “Big Swing Face”?

For some reason(s), obvious and no, both Metheny and Garcia will always go well with BH; both in terms of style & dynamics, as well as history (by which I mean that the recordings can’t be changed, right? Who else would play those solos? 8-) Nevermind, I digress). I’m sure it has a lot to do with the nature of ‘partnerships in improv,’ which, if you’ve ever gotten your groove on with such a like-minded individual, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Those two both have/had very distinct voices, and the flavor that they could and did lend to the work is unforgettable. They could never have been permament members of the band — such individuals rarely can — (Bruce’s tenure in the Dead as a very surprising and welcome near-exception to that stodgy rule) but that’s why you have journeyman, jacks-of-all-trade rockers like…

Derryberry — fits in well, improvises nicely, great at rock, r&b, country/bluegrass stylings. I wasn’t so fond of him at first — (who cares, it’s BH’s call, right ) and could never really put a finger on why, so maybe I was just jealous ;) but he’s grown on me, and at this point I’d hate to see him go.

    T

P.S. I try to forget that Clapton’s on some of BH’s tunes. I appreciate his place in the rock pantheon but for some time now he’s been slightly embarrassing…IMHO you understand. ;)

Off the top of my head and perhaps to provoke more discussion —

    1) Other pop improv’ers: Zappa, Stevie W., George Clinton and PFunk, Primus, Grateful Dead. That grouping is certainly not conclusive, just sayin’….(and the degree of improv by each artist cited might vary, but is there in a large amount nonetheless)

    2) BH place in pop history: A talented songsmith and an almost impossibly proficient, versatile, and kickass piano player who synthesizes (pun intended) any and all American pop styles with an increasing dollop of both modern classical and American songbook influence. A ‘true’ music fan ignores BH at his/her considerable peril 😆

I know what Fbk. is. I wuz jus’ bein’ silly. It happens a lot.

I wish that there were more hours in the day, but between 3 lil’ chilrens, sleep, laundry, naps, mo’ laundry, cooking, attending the occasional BH show, watching as much baseball on TV as possible (during the season), noodling the guitar, and already spending an inordinate amount of remaining time net surfing, I just ain’t got time for no Facebook. I tried to do some Twitter but got disgusted with the self-importance, IMHO. ;)

But hey, if I can see some obscure BH clips, I might be baited…. 😆

Wow…you did NOT just compare BH to Peter Cetera and Chicago……………. 👿 Oh no, you did!

But, good point, and one that I think most of us take for granted…BH was kinda initially hard to categorize, as he got played on rock stations, pop stations, adult contemporary, etc. I remember hearing BH hits from the 1st album on my local (at the time) rock station (95YNF, in Tampa) and ALSO on the soft rock station played in the drugstore where I worked after school. P’raps the mid 80s were still a part of that semi-inclusive nebulousness of “roots rock,” “alternative rock,” “album rock,” “smooth jazz,” etc.

But, prejudice aside, we ALL know that Bruce rocks. And he rocks WAY harder than Chicago (and ick, Peter Cetera) EVER did. 😆

Have we southerners on the Board offended you in some way???

Alas, I see that the tongue-in-cheek nature of my post hath offended. ‘Twas not my intention whatsoever.

“What the hell brought THAT on?” Read the Post article — the idiot governor of VA.

No, not all Southerners are bigots…after all, I am technically a ‘southerner,’ (hence the provincialized “I’m not laughing at you, I’m laughing with you”) though the joke has always been “Are native Floridians southerners?” I was also alluding cryptically to the vote fiasco that cost Gore the presidency. SOME southerners are bigots, and therefore idiots…we know this to be correct. Some denizens of the northeast U.S. are dimwitted and prejudiced is also a valid observation.

However, no governor of any other state, save for the ‘southern’ states, has dared to condescend to the most illogical and inhumane residents of those states by (pun intended) whitewashing the Confederacy, “states’ rights,” and slavery of Africans with ludicrous ‘proclamations’ about “significance” and “heritage.” (I happened to forget all about McDonnell and Cuccinnelli attempting to take bias protection away from gays and lesbians, and the new stink about felon re-enfranchisement/de-facto literacy tests. What else would we expect from a graduate of Pat Robertson U.?)

Instead of trying to get a laugh, perhaps I should’ve just cited the article and asked what everyone thought of it. I took for granted that we all know the pros and cons of our various strategic origins, and snarked away. To me, a sense of humor about ourselves keeps us from erecting false idols, but hey, that’s just my humble opinion.

If my post rubbed you the wrong way, I am truly sorry and sincerely apologize. I don’t/didn’t take FL jokes personally — believe me, there were many after 2000 — and (perhaps?) wrongly assumed that other native residents of their respective states had/have the same sense of humor that I do about being born on a particular piece of this rock circling the sun.

    Love, kisses, and sorrow —

Well, guys, another way to look at it is that BH IS the boss, so to speak.

I think that he even jokes about this in one of those pre-release vids for “Levitate.” “Benevolent dictator” or whatever…obviously, JT didn’t leave. Also, sometimes a dressing down, as it were, might sound much worse than it is. Peeps are probably just used to BH screaming at ’em! 😆

BTW, indydarkstar, something is very much lost in the translation with all of those ^^&&*** and shit. Next time, give us the real dope cussin’! :P
