Correction — the Webern-heavy first set that I was referring to was Saratoga ’06, NOT ’04. 🙄

And I still have yet to listen to that quote from the Aladdin ’04. I blame Fallout 3. 😳

Jackie, I am surprised that no one’s answered you yet.

I was gonna do it yesterday, but then got sidetracked by Fallout 3. You know, important stuff ;)

This show (Aladdin ’04) is getting to be somewhat of a snippet touchstone, if you please…isn’t this the show that ALSO features the ‘snippety’ intro to “Circus”? The one that one of our members’ fathers asked BH to play at this past summer’s Lowell show? (I forget who that was, and am too lazy to search the archives for it at this point :) )

Speaking of snippets, I FINALLY caught the Webern quote at the end of “King Of The HIll” from Saratoga CA ’04…I know, I know, duh. Yes, even though BH himself references it, someone in the audience calls out “WEBERN!” and then BH does the “Webern Variations” as an intro to “Fortunately Numb.” (Heh.)

    Anyhoo…I’ll listen (again, it’s a GREAT) to that Aladdin show to see if I can ascertain…I ain’t promising a thing tho’….. 😯

Thanks for the notification! It would sho’ be nice to have Munck notify us (is that what that ‘e-mail notification’ check box is for? :P ) but I reckon that purchasers can’t be choosers…oh, wait… ;)

    D’lding now…Pavlovian drooling has already started… 😆

Thanks Treah, for the link…and all I can say ’bout that is…I guess Virginians ought to get together and have their own awards…after Chris Brown’s trial for battery. 🙄

Re. the Grammys — Damn, I’m glad that I was drinking watching that excrement. Made it a bit more passable. No pun intended…I’d forgotten how lame “pop” music is these days…always try to give it the benefit of the doubt (pop music and the Grammy broadcast), ya never know when a good performance will occur. Even if it is Soy Bomb. :P

What it is…what it is, what it is….

…is that, as ‘Service’ (what I like to call him :D ) at Munck replied, the Buff. show isn’t dl’able ’cause it’s not ready yet…$0 is listed, which means as such…

My mistake, that. (You could quarrel with them putting it up, but not being ready…but that’s another subject.)

However, as I alluded to, and mistook this new listing for, there are several shows in the ’04 and ’02 groups that are priced and yet cannot be clicked upon to purchase for dl. Anyhooo….

I’m sure that the Buff. show will be a tasty treat indeed, once it be ready. 😆

    Hey Jim —

Thanks for the setlists and review…always fun to read another fan’s perspective, not to mention just which tunes BH played…for the obsessed, like myself and many others here :P

I’m gonna be lazy here, but were the 2 shows on the same night?

I’d like to enlist the help of the musicians and music aficionados on the board.

We all know Bruce likes to change the way he plays songs from time to time, especially his hit songs. I’ve noticed one certain “groove” on two different songs from two different recordings:

1.The Valley Road from Here Come The Noisemakers
    2. Look Out Any Window from the Munck Music recording of the July 11, 2002, Salt Lake City show.

Does this tempo have a name? I really like it! :D (This is a serious question)

Does anyone else have a favorite version of one of Bruce’s songs?

    Jackie

I’ve not heard that “Window,” but “The Valley Road” as played on HCTN is a semi-shuffle, played in 6/8 time. Doesn’t BH state as such in the box set liner notes :?: I think that he also says that that version (of VR) was a segue out of the Dead tune “Wharf Rat”….altho’ I could be mistaken ’bout that :?

Fave versions? Why you gotta ask such a hard question? :P I happ’d to enjoy the HELL out of the “Defenders>King O’ The Hill” he played at Lowell this summer, a monster that featured a Ravel piece at the beginning, some ‘out’ seguing between the tunes, and a squeaky mic stand/drum solo. Also, funnily enough, a semi-regular tempo/time sig. “Valley Road” with the chromatic keys/sax/git harmony, and Ornette’s “Questions and Answers” rearing its harmolodic head in the middle.

    Memories…. :D

    Hmmmm, let’s see if I can remember…

Got a couple of dvds, Rush’s “Snakes and Arrows–Live” and the Police “Live In Buenos Aires.” Haven’t watched the latter yet (very much looking forward to it), the former is a bit of a let down: even tho’ the old stuff sounds great, the new Rush material (featured very prominently on the set) is lackluster and uninspired.

CDs — besides the new Dead Road Trips MSG ’90 (quite good, but I still like the Bruce-era ’91 Dead releases a bit better), I picked up John Adams’ “Big Sur/Charles Ives” which I’ve not got around to.
I did listen to Schoenberg’s “Warsaw” (and etc) — thumbs up — and Webern’s “Symphony/Six Pieces” etc, that I need to listen to again, shall we say… 🙄 Eliott Carter’s “Orchestral Works,” Bartok’s “Concerto for Orchestra,” both get a :D

What else…got the Zappa archive release “Wazoo Boston ’72” (or whatever the thang is called)…reminded me why the Hot Rats/Wazoo era is NOT a fave. :P On the other hand, save up yer dough, spend yer gift cards, use yer coupons to pick up, if you’re so inclined, the Genesis “1970-1975” box set…worth every penny, and I was initially VERY skepticalismic 8-)

But what I was really disappointed about was the no new Bruce ‘best o’ Summer ’08…that was quite a sad day ’round here :P

Thanks CD, for the review…interesting that Sonny wasn’t there…

The 90min. bit sounds constricting, fo’ sho’….

And Bruce saying he had never done “Innocence>Fields” is correct in a technical sense…the MunckMix boot of Portland ’05 has a “Fields>Innocence.”

I would’ve loved to’ve seen this somewhat strange show in my hometown, but no matter how I tried, the earliest we’ll be able to get down (GET DOWN!) Tampa-way will be in a couple of weeks….

Anyone else have a review that they can add to CD’s?

    Posting madness continues…sorry! 😆

Just got the payoff for the price o’ the set (which wasn’t extravagant at all, I’m just sayin’):
track 9, disc 1 (the jam out of “Let It Grow”) is roughly 10 mins. of Bruce and Jerry dueling/noodling with/at each other, and Bob chiming in every so often…fantastic.

“Road Trips MSG ’90” was just dropped off via UPS about an hour ago…so far, so very good.

The audio is great, one somewhat jarring edit from one night to another, but whaddaya gonna do? ;)

Set list (aggregate) is cool, but I agree with Mike C — the ’91 MSG shows were a bit better. However, putting things in perspective, a fine set of discs nonetheless!

    Phil —

If I may butt in :D — a few thoughts from a Tampa native (Tampan? 😆 ) now sequestered in southeast VT…

(Hey Dave, I think that by ‘GA’ Phil meant ‘general admission,’ NOT Georgia… ;) )

Here’s a basic overview to enjoying other things in the area —

Try Ybor City, for food and drink (happens to be close to the concert venue). Yes, if you must, go to Busch (not ‘Bush’) Gardens, but it’s expensive (consider the season pass). For the sun and fun, avoid the Clearwater beaches, try St. Pete’s instead — the water might not be THAT cold (plus, you get used to it pretty quick!)….

Back to food, I’m trying to think of some decent restaurants: Sukhothai (Thai), Joto and Ichiban (sushi), the former in South Tampa, the latter in North T…used to be a few Brit-style pubs in So. T, and there were at least 2 Irish pubs in the aforementioned Ybor City area.

If you have any other questions, post here or e-mail me off board…I’d be glad to answer any queries. I grew up there, went to ‘university’ (heh) there, worked/played etc etc until I was 30, so I should be able to help you…I could even suggest some people to see 8-) We still get back frequently (to go see Red Sox v. Rays games at the Tropicana Dome, family in the area, friends etc).

Enjoy the show, and the Tampa region! (I’m jealous…we won’t be able to go to Tampa until Jan. at the earliest….)

However, I can’t help you with your American football issues…I’ve got no idea re. the esoterica of deciding which locale and location collegiate ‘football’ is played :)

    Lucky you!!
I’ve been handing in some pretty creative requests for about 25 shows now, and none of MINE have shown up in a Request Collage…not even one of the many Teddy Bears I’ve sacrificed to carry my requests on stage. And, believe me, giving up Humpy the Bear was woefully painful….but… it got me onstage to dance with Bruce and Ricky in Raleigh!! 😆 😆 😆

Maybe my request for Bay Days will make a Collage….a black rubber rat to request “Black Rats of London” 😉

Speaking of dancing, ya shoulda seen the stage at Lowell 8/14…like CGessner said, I believe, when they played “Jacob’s” at first there was nobody, then the whole front was inundated with chicks a’dancing…and a couple of dudes, which was somewhat comical…

The black rat will probably get his attention…but it seems like BH likes to play his faves, and/or material which has been recently released…fr’instance, I e-pestered him (thru the BH site) about how much I dug “Camp Meeting” and how I was gonna see BH and the NM at Lowell…he wrote back saying that I should request some o’ those tunes. So perhaps it ain’t the lipstick, so much as it is the pig (or in this case, the rodent)…if ya know what I mean? :D Ask BH to play something he could work into one of the concert chestnuts, and he seems to go crazy wit’ that.

But hey…seeing as how “Black Rats” is new and unreleased, you’ll probably get it. :) I was gonna ask him to segue from “Rats” to some Thin Lizzy — like their version of “Whiskey In The Jar” or “Roisin Dubh(The Black Rose)” but figured that out of what I was asking for, I’d be pushing my luck. (As it was, he played some Ravel, some Ornette, and “King of The Hill” so I was more than pleased….)

    Mine is in #10…

Didn’t have too much of a problem getting it to BH — after the Brew finished clearing their gear off the stage, I noticed a middle-aged tall gentleman (who looked like he was waiting for something) standing on the steps directly in front of BH’s piano, so I stood next to him! That’s real “Hey, I’ll do that TOO” attitude! :D
Not two minutes later some dude with a pass came out and took our requests — I said “Hey, thanks a lot,” and he replied “No, thank YOU.” Heh.

I must say that BH’s policy of ‘no setlists/bring your requests’ really got my appreciative goat — not only does the policy have the potential to satisfy most fans, it also enables the band to pursue ‘new musical adventures’ every night they play…that’s very cool. 8)

Oh…you were the “guy that asked for the piano intro played before the ‘Circus’ from the Aladdin ” as BH said, huh? You must really dig that bit :)

I’ll listen to that show today, see I I have any clue…I never recognized it as anything, but it’s very likely I just wasn’t paying attention… 😆

I kid with ya because I believe that he checked me as either being ‘deep’ or a ‘dweeb’ for requesting Coleman’s “Q&A.” Ha.

After attending 2 Bruce shows this year and many in the past I’ve discovered there are various types of fans at these things:

    1. The yuppies who either don’t know who Bruce is and it’s a “night out” or they only know Bruce as the guy who is known for “The Way It Is”

    2. The deadheads who get disappointed if they don’t hear a dead tune throughout the night

    3. Radio hits fans that are looking for the songs to be played exactly like the albums and are looking for many of the hits to be played that night.

    4. The Die hards who really appreciate Bruce’s music and his off the beaten path jam and segways. The ones that request the obscurities and know what Bruce would want to play.

It’s funny to watch the top 3 of these in a show. Many of them get “bored” or shout dead tunes/other artist’s music, ie Elton,

Depending on the venue/night things can often get awkward if the die hards aren’t in the majority and Bruce has to take the bantar and the shouting of songs that he really doesnt’ feel like playing. The silence. It’s hard to explain but something that can be sensed if the crowd isnt’ on.

    Anyone else notice these things?

    Am I way off?

    AJ —

No, I don’t think that you’re off at all in your categorization. That was the short answer, at least from me :)

Longer part: I’ve seen BH and the NM JUST once — Lowell 8/14 — but in perusing this board, reading other sources of info online, listening to the Munck releases, etc I figure that I can make somewhat of a hasty generalization regarding the differing types o’ fans — but you’ve done it for me.

What seemed to be the case at Lowell in my experience (the crowd, the crowd reaction, the different fans) —

    1) I felt that the crowd, overall, reacted generally well to improv and the more “out” piano noodlings…however —

    2) I DID notice SOME (a very select few) who became restless during reinterpreted parts of the ‘hits’ which led to —

    3) these same listeners departing near the end of “Way” and missing the end of the show. They might’ve been Lowell townies out for the night (isn’t it the case that there are some of those, fellow more experienced Lowell people?) or fair-weather hits peeps who got their fix, albeit a little altered.

    4) Lastly, yes, the ol skool Deadheads (like the very very nice ones in front of me) who persisted in screaming out “Black Muddy RIVAH!” or “Eyes Ah Dah WAHLD!” or some such…I must also say that these same semi-irritating but very gracious old-timers would also shout “YEAH!” when Bruce or one of the guys rocked a solo…so ya take the good with the bad, I s’pose. Ha.

That fact that Mass. is a ‘blue’ state, with p’raps a higher percentage of peeps willing to endulge the restless and creative artiste 8) is a contributing factor…I dunno how the audiences are in other states, or even how the previous ’06 Lowell audience was…

Makes one a bit more appreciative of the numbers of people that the Dead could draw ( knowing full well that up to about 1/3 of each Dead show would be jamming, improv, and/or space with drum solos)….I s’pose they would still have their shouts of “Touch of Grey!”

    Wow…my mind is blown.

Ain’t nothin’ like being there in person…

I was the dweeb that requested both the Ornette tune (which BH riffed twice: once in WWL and once in VR, I believe) and the Mo Ravel which he played before the Defenders>King O’ The Hill awesomeness (which featured BH gettin’ all musique concrete with a squeaky mic stand). I also asked for some Ives but I don’t think that he quoted that…can’t really remember, I think that I was getting a vicinity buzz from the ol’ skool Deadheads in front of me…

I have the whole setlist, I just can’t remember the order, other than opening with Sticks solo, closing with Rainbow’s Cad. (riffing on Monk’s Straight No Chaser), encoring with Fortunate>Numb. Surprised to hear Crown of Jewels and Swan Song… 😮 Lots of BH piano dissonance as well, pretty much wherever he could throw some in…also played Black Rats, which definitely has a Whiskey in The Jar/Thin Lizzy flavor.

By my watch, the show started around 8:40pm and ended at about 10:55, +/- 5mins or so…

I’m sure that someone who was more on the ball than I will post the complete setlist, with all the songs in proper order as played….

First time seeing BH, first time seeing a show at Lowell (but will be catching Taj Mahal there in Sept.) so to say that I’m looking forward to it would be a definite understatement. I’ve got my request list ready and rarin’ to go…

I understand that if it rains, the show goes on (first BH forum pun hee hee) at the Cyrus Irish Auditorium, which according to the Lowell Park site, holds around 1300 people. Such a venue could lend an interesting ‘sock hop/high school talent show’ vibe to the musical goings-on 😆
