ParticipantThanks so much for keeping us up to date on the latest Bruce news. Loved hearing the stories behind the creation of some of the songs.
I’m looking forward to hearing “Valley Road” on the new record. That dulcimer version is my new favorite!

ParticipantI like Bruce’s collaboration with Paul Brady on “Lakes of Ponchatrain” during the 1989 Telluride Bluegrass Festival. It’s one of my favorite Daily Doses. Wish they would play together again.

ParticipantI would like to hear them together, too. Although the songs might have to be in lower keys…
If I remember correctly,Bruce mentioned Emmylou in a long-ago interview (or maybe it was during “The Sensitive Ones” show in Raleigh,NC…)
He said he originally wrote “Lost Soul” with the idea of Emmylou singing the female part.
When he contacted her about singing the part, she said something like,”I can’t sing that high anymore!” That’s when he asked Shawn Colvin to sing the part and the rest is history.
Does anyone else remember this story?

ParticipantAlthough I listen to Bruce’s music almost every day and enjoy going to live shows,I never actually thought I would get the chance to meet him.
I’d read about Bruce’s reputation for being friendly and accommodating to his fans, but have never been one to go backstage by myself after a show or wait by the tour bus to get an autograph or just say hello.
I’ve always admired people who did these things, but never dared to do them.
I always envisioned being in a scene from the old Saturday Night Live sketch “The Chris Farley Show.” I would meet my musical hero and say something brilliant, “Uh,you know that song ‘The Way It Is’? That’s a great song…” Then I would mentally slap myself on the forehead (“Stupid, stupid, stupid!”)
This is how I finally met Bruce:
It was July 22,2007,in Greensboro,NC. Bruce’s solo concert at Guilford College was a few a hours away. Some of the members of the Bruuuce.com Board had gathered for a meet-up at an Italian restaurant across from the venue.
Funny and interesting stories about meeting Bruce were told, but I had no story to tell. My new friends decided this would change.
After the show, one of my new friends took me backstage;the big moment had arrived!
My friend introduced me to Bruce and my “Chris Farley moment” was avoided as I thanked him for playing my request (“Sticks and Stones”). He seemed very pleased to meet the person who had made this request.
As we shook hands,a humorous thing happened. I have some orthopaedic issues that make it look as if my hands aren’t fully developed. When we shook hands,Bruce held my hand very gently and I held his hand very gently (as I had read I should). It was probably the gentlest handshake in history!
My picture was taken to commemorate the occasion, then it was time to leave.
This momentous event would never have happened without lots of help from my Bruuuce.com friends . It will always be a special memory.

ParticipantThanks for letting us “pick your brain”,Si!
I think I remember you telling us you first heard Bruce’s music during a televised soccer game. What was it about his music that peaked your interest?
Who are some of the other musicians/groups you listen to?
Thanks again,
Jackie

ParticipantI finally heard a song where Bruce “called out” for Bobby to play. If you listen very carefully to “Valley Road” during the July 5,2013,Eugene,OR,show you’ll hear a very nice (short) Bobby solo.

ParticipantI believe I can help you,GuinessGoon- send me a PM.
I really hate to hear that munckmusic has gone downhill these days. They were really helpful when I was a newbie in the world of online downloads and were also very cooperative when I had a couple of other customer service issues. What a difference a decade makes…@

Funny you should say that,MVF.
It reminds me of the first time I submitted a concert report to the Board.
It received such a nice response from the Board members,I emailed a copy to my sister. Her response was,”If they ever publish a ‘Bruce Hornsby Magazine’,you should writ for it.”. If such a periodical was ever developed,I’d be the first to apply!
Thanks for the compliment & for bringing back a happy family memory.

ParticipantBluegrassBaron, post: 9016 wrote:As Bruce himself would say, “Nine-Time Grammy Loser”But, seriously, piano rock icon doesn’t necessarily fit Bruce. I think he’s perceived in general as a top 40 hitmaker from the ’80s. Anyone that ventured into the ’90s and beyond with him obviously have a different perception. I’d offer up these three words for him: fearless pervayor of prestidigitation
I agree, that description doesn’t necessarily fit Bruce. Perhaps it would be more appropriate for people such as Elton John or Billy Joel…
I’ve sometimes wished that Bruce had the popularity of the “piano rock icons.” I think it would be great if more people got to hear this great,in-the-moment music.
This brings to mind another question. If Bruce had become as well known as the artists listed above, would his music be different today?

Participant*House, when it was on. I am so intrigued by Hugh Laurie,I bought his 2 blues/jazz piano CDs. He’s not as technically skilled a piano player as Bruce, but I love that he really has a great time playing. I also like the fact that he respects the “old time” blues & jazz forms of music, but still puts some original twists in the older songs.
*Monk-just starting to watch this series in syndication
*Breaking Bad and Mad Men are on my “shows I want to watch” list.
