So far, this hasn’t even been worth chewing through the restraints for……Hmm…So much has happened in the last few months. Where do I begin?
Here are the highlights:
*Si is planning a Daily Dose week May 4-8, featuring an entire Bruce show each day.
*Several new projects (a photography exhibition,a music showcase and a new Bruce cover CD) are underway, for those who want to express their creativity.
*Bruce’s music will be featured in the upcoming Robin Williams film World’s Greatest Dad. Bruce will also make a cameo appearance in the movie.
*A very funny April Fool’s joke involving the song Shadow Hand.
*A film score written by Bruce for the film Kobe Doin’ Work. The film will be shown on ESPN soon.
*Our friend Aaron shared a beautiful video he produced featuring Song H.
*Lively and interesting discussions about The Grateful Dead, new and old Munck Music live releases (Buffalo 2008 is the latest one) and Bruce’s most recent Grammy nomination.
*Bruce hosted/narrated a BBC Radio documentary about Fats Domino.
And the best highlight of all:
*The return of The Bruuuce.com website!Hope this “catches you up” on some of the events you missed. Welcome back!

ParticipantHi Mary!
I need my beauty sleep, too-considering I look like this: 😯 on many mornings! 😆
But you are right; missing a little sleep is a small price to pay. Getting tickets for a Bruce show is definitely worth it.Jackie

This was my first Bruuuce show and I’d really enjoy the trip down memory lane. Hard to believe it was 10 years ago! Thanks for your hard work on this, Si. If you can’t get that one posted up, I’ll understand. As a substitute (that Who song has been in my head all week!) I would gladly accept any show Bruuuce has done in my hometown, Louisville, KY. No pressure!molo3
I haven’t heard this entire show, but listening to selections Si has shared with us over the years,it sounds like a great one!
My favorite moment from the “doses” I have is Bruce’s banter/admonition to the audience member who wants the band to pick up the tempo during Sugaree. That exchange is pure Bruce-“up one side and down the other”-to borrow a phrase my grandmother often used!

ParticipantA very interesting interpretation….
The explanation of which Monica is speaking can be found in the Sept. 13,2004, London solo show.
Bruce says:
“It’s about one of my sons-or actually both my sons- who had these imaginary friends. They had names for them and all. And I always thought it was a very interesting thing, they would talk about these imaginary friends of theirs to us and tell us what they were doing. And I sort of thought to myself, ‘You know, there was a time in my school years/college years where I was living alone for so long and I probably was talking to the wall myself and had my own imaginary friend.’ So this is sort of based on that.”Jackie

ParticipantGuinnessGoon, please forgive me for misinterpreting your post; what you were trying to say apparently went over my head. 😳 As you can tell, I like everyone in our “Board family” to get along, but if we all agreed with each other or looked at topics the same way, we never would have lively discussions like this.
I’d like to borrow Trey’s format now, with his kind permission:
Re: Bruce’s regard for his audience: I think Bruce acknowledges the “nostalgia-ridden” (his words) people in the audience because he realizes there are a few people who do go to the show just to hear the hits. I don’t believe he is addressing the majority of most crowds. I’ve heard Bruce say he “flipped” his audience from one that wanted the “museum approach” to his music to a group that had an appreciation for creativity in music. I’m not sure when this transformation took place, but I would guess it was soon after his time playing with the Dead.
Re:Talking about the Dead: Since I’m relative “newbie” to the Dead’s music, I would like to read what others here have to say about the band. I’ve listened to some Grateful Dead discussion shows on the radio and this is the impression I get concerning Bruce: He is a great musician and was a welcome addition during his time in the band, but he will never be held in the same regard as “Pigpen,”Keith, Brent or Vince-maybe because his time in the group was short or for some other reasons. If this is incorrect, I’d be more than happy to be “set straight” on the subject.
I don’t drink wine while listening to Bruce (or other good music) either. It makes me sleepy and that’s the last thing I want to be when listening to good music!

ParticipantDavid, now you’ve gone and done it, given away the secret ingredient in bbq!
Mary, the best way I can describe peach cobbler is: a dessert similar to a fruit pie, but with only a top crust. The best example of this delicacy can most likely be found in Georgia, USA, but my recipe is also pretty good!
I’ll make a good effort to bring some to Asheville.
I’m already looking forward to seeing you all there!
Jackie

ParticipantThanks for the great news, mary and bryan!
To borrow a phrase from David, I’m “fired up” already!
But mary, better keep that bbq opinion quiet-at least while you’re in Asheville, NC. North Carolina devotes entire weeks to the celebration of barbeque! 😆 😆 -strange but true… Since tobacco has fallen out of favor(for good reasons), it’s almost all we have left.

ParticipantI believe there are many people who get Bruce’s music, but don’t get The Grateful Dead’s music. I admit I was one of them until I began listening to their music about three years ago.
Other Bruce fans could thoroughly enjoy The Tango King or Sunflower Cat with no knowledge of the musical references to the Dead in those songs. They could also find pleasure in Bruce’s “stretched out jazzy jams” because they love jazz.
If some of Bruce’s fans gain a better appreciation of the Dead’s music because they listen to him, cool. If this doesn’t happen, is that so bad? Isn’t there room in the Hornsby musical universe for all types of fans?

ParticipantI had to think about this one a while. I love the 2002 shows because they were the first Munck releases and they featured songs from Big Swing Face. The live versions of those songs made me appreciate them.
Here is my list:
-Jacksonville ’02 (the smooth jazz version of The Way It Is and Bruce singing Grandma’s Hands)Salt Lake City ’02 (Wharf Rat>Look Out Any Window and I Will Walk With You and the tributes to “Cornelius Bum’ bee Read” and Sonny Emory)
Copenhagen ’04 (Look Out Any Window)
Portland ‘04
Chicago ’04 (End Of The Innocence>Little Drummer Boy)
Montgomery ’05 (The Way It Is)
Asheville ’05 (Jacob’s Ladder>Stranger In A Strange Land)

ParticipantThanks for the report, Jim. Sounds like I have a lot of great musical adventures ahead!
That pesky four letter word beginning with “w” does cut in to music appreciation time, doesn’t it?
Actually, I retract that comment. Those of us who have a paying job and/or the physical ability to do the mundane household chores are very fortunate.
Happy listening!

ParticipantI ordered my “old school” CD version of the show this past Friday & I’m drooling in anticipation! (That’s getting to be a habit on this thread 😆 )
Speaking of drooling, isn’t Gonna Be Some Changes Made on the setlist? I love the live version of this song; what do you guys who have heard it think of this version?

Participant’04…’06…I understood which show you were talking about.
What difference does two years make, anyway? (Except to a teenager in the US who is 2 years away from getting his/her driver’s license. 😆
Have fun (or should I say, have a successful post-nuclear survival?) playing Fallout 3.

ParticipantTrey,
Video games can eat up lots of time. My current addiction is Wii Music-located at the other end of the game spectrum from Fallout 3,but still fun.
You’re right about the “Circus On The Moon” bit from that show-great memory! Look under the topic Help! in the General Chat section to re-read that interesting request.
I’ve got the Saratoga ’04 show, but have been “saving” it ’til I can really listen with undivided attention;it sounds like a good one.
A hint for the trivia question: The snippet Bruce plays during The Way It Is is from a song some people believe sounds similar to The Way It Is.

ParticipantFor those interested in this topic, Sirius/XM Satellite Radio is celebrating “90s Week” beginning Monday Feb. 16, on The Grateful Dead Channel. (Sirius channel 32, XM channel 57)
I believe they will be featuring various concerts and interviews from that era.

ParticipantRich,
Great news for the cello players!
“Trombone valve beard?” Luckily,I never suffered from that affliction. Thank goodness, because I was goofy-looking enough during my trombone playing years;that condition added to it would have “done me in.”

ParticipantThanks for solving the mystery,Dave.
The intuition/telepathy phenomenon sounds pretty cool, wish I could hear your band do it live someday…
And yeah,I forgot about Bruce’s nods & hand signals, that could be the way they did it.

ParticipantThanks for the news,Trey. And you delivered it with a cool new turn of phrase… Hooray, another live Bruce release! The setlist looks incredible.
I can’t help you with the download problem, sorry. But I’m sure some of our computer savvy friends will assist you.

ParticipantThis is truly sad news. The loss of a family member is terrible no matter when it happens, but because R.S. was so young and muically talented,it is even more devastating. My thoughts and prayers are with the Hornsby family.

ParticipantAndy,
I agree;those are two great versions of Bruce’s songs. Speaking of the Copenhagen show, isn’t the version of Look Out Any Window from that concert cool? There must be something about that song that lends itself to Bruce’s “reworking.”Takavl,
Thanks for the answer to my question. The liner notes in my copy of the box set began coming apart soon after I opened them and I’ve been reluctant to pick them up again. Guess I’d better “get over it”-sounds like there is a lot of good information there! You’re probably right about the Wharf Rat >Valley Road because Bruce also played Wharf Rat before Look Out Any Window during the 2002 Salt lake City show.
I’d love to hear that Defenders>King Of The Hill, etc. Maybe it will be released someday…

ParticipantCan we re-open this thread for 2009?
What new music did everyone get for Christmas?
Here’s my list:
1.B.B. King One Kind Favor
2.Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan Ballad Of The Broken Seas
3.Charlie Haden Family & Friends Rambling BoyBruce plays some beautiful, heartfelt piano on the Charlie Haden album (He’s Gone Away,Is This America?),but the one song I can’t stop playing is 20/20 Vision. It made me remember that although Bruce is a tremendous when playing piano, his singing shouldn’t be taken for granted.
