When the Doses appear on the site again, the first ones could be selected from David’s Top Ten favorite Bruce songs! (A topic explored “way back when, long time ago..”)
Those songs would truly be “Dayly Doses.”

ParticipantThnks for the compliment,David!
I’ll just add one caveat to your kind words;never ask me for driving directions. The results would not be pretty. 😆
Bram,
You’re joking about the meaning of MVF,aren’t you? those letters are an integral part of this forum!

ParticipantHi Bram,
Read Si’s post under Oopsies! dated July 1st. You’ll find the answer there.

You can find that on his Malibu solo show from January 30, 2007 (right before the song ‘Standing on the Moon’). Or maybe you have heard the story before. It features one of the best one-liners I have ever heard, coming from none other than Don Henley (Mr. Henly did NOT like the Dead at all).I do have that show, but I’d been “saving” it until I could really devote all of my attention to it. I finally listened to it yesterday after reading your post;I just had to hear that story!
It is a very cool anacdote. You can see the events unfold as Bruce is telling it.

ParticipantMVF wrote:There are two poems in which I can’t find the “Bruce” phrase. They are “Summer Solstice” on pg. 25, and “Starlit Darkness” on pg. 49. I don’t think copyright laws will let me print the entire poems here, or I would turn it into a contest. Does anyone have this book, and can you help me out???I think Mr. Harley’s book is very cool!
Here’s the phrase from “Starlit Darkness” on pg. 49. The phrase is taken from Defenders Of The Flag and it’s in the last verse of the poem:
“Our galaxy surely is something of splendor,
The planets, part of God’s grand design;
Tonight see how those stars just seem to flicker,
Wow,can’t you see them shine?“
–excerpted from “Starlit Darkness” by Andy HarleyI’m still puzzling out the other poem…Hope this helps.

ParticipantI forgot one item. Last Christmas,my nephew got a vintage Bruce Hornsby and the Range shirt for me from an online auctin site.
Unfortunately, when he got the shirt in the mail,he discovered it was a child’s size instead of an adult’s! He promised to have it framed and then give it to me.
I haven’t received it yet,but since he’s been busy doing an internship, job hunting AND moving,I can wait ’til things settle down for him.

Participantnicos1331 wrote:My favorite version of ‘Sugaree’ is the one Mr. Hornsby did on “The Strange Remain” live album recorded during the 1998 Furthur Tour (07/17/98 OH).“
As for ‘Wharf Rat,’ ‘Black Muddy River,’ & ‘Sugaree’, it’s apparent that you enjoy the words of Robert Hunter and the music of Jerry Garcia. They were a wonderful songwriting team.Speaking of which, the marrying of Robert Hunter words with Jerry Garcia’s music is also responsible for several more classic songs performed by Mr. Hornsby, including: Row Jimmy, Brokedown Palace, Standing on the Moon, Scarlet Begonias, Franklin’s Tower, He’s Gone, Terrapin Station incl. Lady with a Fan, and Tennessee Jed.
Thanks for prodding my memory, Nicos! I’ve been meaning to add The Strange Remain to my CD collection, but it slipped my mind. I guess this means I’m getting old and I need to start writing these things down!
Thanks also for the interesting account about the Wharf Rats and the Jerry Garcia story;I really enjoy those types of stories.
I also appreciate Row Jimmy, Brokedown Palace and Standing On The Moon. Thanks to Si and to Bruce Hornsby Live, I’ve had the pleasure of listening to some truly beautiful versions of those songs.
Changing the subject (sort of), I also enjoy listening to Bruce’s versions of Comfortably Numb and Tempus Fugit. I neglected to add these to my original favorite covers list because they appear in so many of the great recordings I have that I’ve been thinking of them as Bruce’s own songs instead of covers. 😳
And let’s not forget Bruce’s nod to Van Morrison’s Caravan often sung during The Show Goes On; it adds to that exciting, enthusiastic conclusion he and the Noisemakers frequently play.

Here is “part 2” of my list: *Will It Go Round In Circles *We’ll Sing In The Sunshine-07/28/01, sung during Funhouse
*Jack Of Diamonds-07/28/01, sung before Jacob’s Ladder
*Lady Madonna-07/23/05, sung during Go Back To Your Woods
*Slip Away-07/24/02, during I Will Walk With You
*Loser
*Dear Prudence
*Friends (originally by Elton John)
*Black Muddy River
*That Would Be Something, often sung during the “non-bluegrass” version of Mandolin Rain
*That’s Where It’s At and *Under The Boardwalk-often sung during Fields of Gray
*SugareeI admit, the list isn’t short & sweet, but each song brings out such strong emotions (happiness, sentiment, contemplation), I couldn’t eliminate even one!
On the subject of jazz “covers,” I like them all; my favorite is Celia.
Finally,I’ll add a resounding,”Yes!” to MVF’s Amen!-I couln’t agree with you more.

ParticipantI’ve fallen behind on my forum reading and see I’ve missed a lot of good topics! Here is my attempt to catch up:
1. Favorite Bruce covers: *.Wharf Rat (11/07/02,Red Butte Garden-Salt Lake City,UT-I’d never heard the song before) *King Harvest (another “new” song to my ears) *A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall (7/19/02,one of Si’s Daily Doses) *Children Of Zion *Big Rock Candy Mountain *How Far Am I From Canaan? *You Sexy Thing (always makes me smile
) *The Mighty Quinn *Stranger In A Strange Land
2. Favorite Brue era: All of them!
If I had to choose one,I’d select the Noisemakers era. This is probably because this is the time period in which I’ve seen the most live shows. I never had the pleasure of seeing Bruce live during the Range days.

ParticipantI’m not sure how odd these stories are; maybe they could be filed under the heading: Aren’t People Funny?
1. My husband John and I run a small vending business. For various boring reasons, we had to rearrange some of the products in the machines. While re-stocking one of the soda machines, a customer approached John and commented, “I really like the discount you all are having on ___”
John: “What discount?”
Customer: “Oh, nothing.”After checking the machine it was discovered that due to the re-arranging (and human error), we had inadvertently been selling one particular soda at almost a 50% “discount.” 😳 Did the customer think we wouldn’t check the item if they simply assured us nothing was amiss? We were astounded at this example of the negative side of human nature and chastened by our mistake.
2. We recently moved into a new apartment. The front door key wasn’t working properly, so we called to report the problem. When the technician came to repair the lock, we explained, “If you slide the key all the way into the lock, it doesn’t work; if you partially slide the key into the lock, it works.” The technician asked, “Why would you want to slide the key all the way into the lock?” I was so astonished, I was rendered speechless. Ever since then, I’ve been trying to remember some of Mad magazine’s “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions,” but to no avail. Does anyone have a comeback I should have used?
I repeat, aren’t people funny?

Maybe, just maybe, you need some Stacked Mary Possum!
Check it out!Listen to it!
Now…..don’t you feel a whole lot better? 😆I don’t have a problem with the Bruce 100-just making an unscientific observation.
(Taking a break to listen to Stacked Mary Possum)
Ah,that does feel much better!
Isn’t it amazing how listening to that song makes the day’s troubles melt away?

ParticipantAnother interesting fact: six out of the top ten songs could be classified as ballads. I love the slower songs, and Bruce really has a way with this style of music, but to paraphrase the man himself,if people only listen to the ballads, “They’ve missed the best part.”
