Anyone else have moments like that? I know none of you probably have had a moment like that with a Bruce songs, since we are all very careful about lyrical analysis with his canon

Actually, I had moments like that with two Bruce songs 😳 😳 :

1.Rainbow’s Cadillac-when I first heard it,I thought it was about a boxer. (“shorts of plaid…coat of more colors than Joseph had”). In my mind,I thought this was a description of the clothes a boxer might wear during a match-the “coat” being the boxer’s robe. I also thought the line “throw it down at the proper time” referred to “throwing” a fight.

    2. Walk In The Sun-it took me months to fianally realize this song was about two people who work in a “gentleman’s club.” I liked the chorus so much,it took me a while to really listen to the verses!

I was just listening to Circus on the Moon and realized something. I keep waiting for Bruce to hit his piano solo, but for some reason he never does. On the other hand, Bruce does something I’ve never heard him do before. At the end of the song, he does an “around the horn” thing with the Noisemakers.

Give a listen to the version of Circus On The Moon during the December 3,’05, Williamsburg, VA show. Don’t Bruce and the Noisemakers go “around the horn” here also?

Now, I think it might be another of Bruce’s “hometown story” tunes

Bruce tells a great version of this “hometown story” about The Chill during the September 22.’04 show in Copenhagen. It seems there was a mysterious house in Bruce’s neighborhood that aroused the curiosity of the children who lived there. It was rumored the house was inhabited by Russian spies.

An interesting footnote: I think I read an interview in which Bruce referred to this story. Several years after the events in the story occurred, Bruce and his mother began talking about that strange house and the rumors surrounding it. Bruce’s mother said something like,-The adults back then heard those rumors too and perhaps some of them were true-. 😯

Jackie, as the Queen Bee and the King of the Hill of “name that tune”, you have disqualified yourself from that question. (I already know you know what it is.) 😉

Yes,Bruce did play Charlie Woody and you at Guilford-great memory David!

Queen Bee?…oooh I like that! It made my day when I read it. :)

Visit the southeastern US and sample some fried squash-it’s the only recipe that makes the vegetable edible. 😆

Seriously,my family was naming things they were thankful for today and one of the things I listed was “music.” I’m also very appreciative of the bruuuce.com website.

Yeah, it would be cool if Bruce sang these songs . . .
    Yesterday’s Wine” (willie) Why not?
“And So It Goes” (billy) Joel’s got Soul.
“When She Loved Me” (randy) I don’t think Bruce should sing about short people.

All your choices are really interesting. The ones that really intrigued me:
“Yesterday’s Wine”-what would be your opinion of Bruce doing a duet on this song with say, Mark Knopfler or Ricky Skaggs? Wouldn’t it almost rival the Haggard/Jones version?

“And So It Goes”-Bruce singing this would have me in tears for days…

“When She Loved Me”-yes! I’ve been thinking Bruce could really sing a great version of “Baltimore,” but this is an even better idea.

    Thanks for the refreshing observations.

I finally heard Bruce’s contribution to this album on a “new music” program on satellite radio. The song was great, but what I found most interesting was the comment the radio host made. He said “Don’t Blame It On Me” was one of the best songs on the compilation.

I had the feeling the radio host hadn’t heard much BH music, with the exception of the hits from the 80s. Perhaps this track has helped to add a new fan.

Jackie: I’m surprised you’re the first to put “The Way It Is” at the top of your list! “So Out” is a nice addition, and “Carry the Water” is unique. Thanks for playing!

Victor, I should have made it clear,my list isn’t from most favorite to lesser favorites. I really can’t name an all-time favorite song-there are just too many to choose. I put my “top 10” list in the order the songs were released. “The Way It Is” would probably still be near the beginning of a true top 10. simply because it was the song that introduced me to Bruce’s music. Or perhaps I’m secretly one of those “nostalgia buffs” Bruce teases sometimes. 😆

My thoughts exactly! I asked myself: “Which songs make me absolutely stop what I’m doing because I don’t want to miss one note?”(And even then, it was still difficult to narrow it down.) Here they are:

    1. The Way It Is
    2. Down the Road Tonight
    3. Defenders of the Flag
    4. Till The Dreamings Done
    5. Carry the Water
    6. Fields of Gray
    7. The Tango King
    8. Song C
    9. So Out
    10. Un Poco Loco/Chant Song

Victor’s “Redux” thread got me thinking about this topic and I thought it might be interesting to revisit it. Does anyone have a particular live version of one of Bruce’s songs they really love?

My pick would be Candy Mountain Run. When Bruce starts playing that introduction with the sixteenth notes (you all know the one) and begins Big Rock Candy Mountain, it spreads a feeling of joy and happiness through the whole audience! If he includes Children Of Zion sometime during the song-wow!

Anyone else feel strongly about a live version of a Bruce song?

Any songs you’d like to hear played in the “old” style now and again?

I really like it when Bruce reworks his classic songs. If someone twisted my arm, however…I wouldn’t mind hearing The Road Not Taken or Till The Dreaming’s Done in the “retro” style.

The themes of lost/unrequited love just tug at my heartstrings. Another reason for my attachment to these songs may be that each one is the final song on the side of the cassette on which they appear. Guess they made a lasting impression.

If you ever need a great “Bruce busts out Leon” moment, just listen to the daily dose from 10/15/90,Amsterdam,Netherlands, entitled “medley.” If this music doesn’t put a smile on your face, better check your pulse! 😆

A very cool mention found on glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack. The article is by Scott Bernstein:

MP3 Boot Camp: The Other (Better) Bruce
Bruce “I was the best keyboard player the Grateful Dead ever had” Hornsby counts many amateur and professional musicians among his myriad fans. And some of these musicians have collaborated on Caesar Salad — a freely downloadable album worth of Hornsby cover tunes. The tracks are well worth your listen, and we especially dig the Danish cover band Way It Is’ take on Fields of Grey.

I really like the live,”get-up-and-dance” version of this song-especially 10/15/04,Portsmouth,VA.
While introducing the song, Bruce tells a story about the one-on-one game he and Allen Iverson played that is priceless!

Now we just need to convince Bruce that it really was a very cool album that wears quite well over the years. “So Out”, which we seem to agree on being a very cool song, has only been played ONCE ever, and that was last August, in Charlotte. Maybe we need to request more BSF songs so he can see how much it is liked (at least among us).

I’ve tried to do my part in requesting songs from Big Swing Face. I requested “So Out” in Charlotte & “Sticks and Stones” this year in Greensboro. I think including a copy of the words to the song attached to the request shows that the request is a serious one,not just a last-minute idea. (Thanks for this tip,Si!).

Persistence is also a factor. I tried the “So Out” request in Asheville last year-no dice. But I repeated my request 2 nights later and my appeal was answred.
