“So Out”. is my favorite song from Big Swing Face! “Fluorescent flaccid floppy-haired gleamers
    Saccharine silver-foil dreamers
Black light swinging five people singing
Around and around and my ears are ringing…”

I listen to XM Cafe all the time,Ican’t believe I missed it,oh well, maybe next time…

How embarassing! 😳 With all the getting on one knee, typing & begging I forgot from which state you hail-how gauche! :) I love peaches! My family had a miniscule peach orchard and one season,we even picked & sold part of our “bumper crop.” I make a mean peach cobbler & love home made peach ice cream on a hot summer’s day…

Let’s try this again. (Resuming the begging posture): Please tell us your Leon story,David. Pretty please with sugar, whipped cream and fresh, ripe Georgia peaches on top?

What do you think? What other songs sounds like Leon Russell? :D

Here’s a list of songs I think fits this description:

    Another Day
Look Out Any Window (some of the live versions)
    Country Doctor
    King Of The Hill
    Preacher In The Ring I
Candy Mountain Run (style of singing)
    King Harvest

Speaking of singing style, Bruce pays tribute to Leon Russell’s singing style throughout the A Night On The Town album. Am I correct or is this statement only wishful thinking?

    Sean,
The yearbook photo & info isn’t necessary, but a heartfelt apology from me is. 😳 I’m sincerely sorry for causing you offense. My only excuse is: I’ve been severely burned by using internet sources. I simply wanted to inform my fellow Bruce H. fans that I was unsure of the source of the article. I’m sorry.

This will teach me to look more carefully before I write. Thanks for the lesson in fact-checking.

This deserves some attention. Give me a good grade if you will! 😆

Long, long time ago. Way back when. I read several articles where Bruce said that he had been influenced by Steely Dan. Steely Dan being jazz/pop was in a class by themself. Very creative for their time.

Since Bruce majored in jazz, it was just a matter of time that he came out with a jazz record. Some of the songs on Camp Meeting definitely have a Steely Dan feel to them. Camp Meeting itself being one of them.

Did Steely Dan help influece Bruce to major in jazz that inevitably led Bruce to do Camp Meeting? 8) :D

Hmmm…Great question! (preceded by some equally great Bruce quotes!) My best guess would be,”Yes.” Bruce often shows some of his “pop” influences-Leon and Elton-when playing,so it makes sense that the Steely Dan influence would apeear on the jazz album.

Ah,another reason to listen to this wonderful CD-trying to find more effects of Steely Dan on the music!

Thanks for the article,Victor! It seems Jack DeJohnette and Christian McBride both asked Bruce to make a jazz album with them-very interesting… Will this fact give the purists who might think Bruce is just “dabbling” in jazz food for thought?

I’ve had the CD for two days now and I can’t stop listeneing to it! Here are my impressions so far:

Charlie,Woody And You-love the interaction between Bruce and Chrustian McBride here.

Camp Meeting-it REALLY grabbed my attention around the 3:40 mark.

Questions And Answers and Giant Steps-“jumpers” (to borrow a “Bruce-ism”) is the word that comes to mind.

We’ll Be Together Again-I was expecting the slow, mellow version of the song and was pleasantly surprised. The sampling of stride piano is a nice touch too.

My favorites so far are “Solar” and “Celia.” Celia reminds me of Spider Fingers (or does Spider Fingers remind me of Bud Powell tunes?)

That’s all for now. If you all will kindly excuse me,I have to go back to the Camp Meeting….

This is the biggest hint I can give you:

What do all these have in common?
Bruce, “Skunk”, Steely Dan, Bruce’s new jazz record

OK David,I give up! I’ve listened to the CD,poured over the liner notes and wracked my brain for obscure bits of Bruce trivia, but I can’t find the answer! Put me out of my misery, please! 😆

    [quote quote=”David Day”

Jackie, tell everyone about the Jack Straw story. I think they would find it interesting! :D

    [/quote]

It all began with the Deadicated tribute CD released in 1991. Two of the tracks included were “Bertha” by Los Lobos and “Jack Straw” by Bruce Hornsby & The Range.

Fast forward to the 1996 Further Festival. Bruce and his fellow musicians were backstage listening to Los Lobos play. Los Lobos was really “tearing it up.” The audience, filled with Grateful Dead fans, gave a mostly lukewarm reaction to this great performance-until they played their final song-“Bertha.” The people went nuts! From that moment on Los Lobos kept this song in their setlist in order to insure that positive crowd reaction.

Bruce watched this scenario unfold and decided he didn’t want something similar to happen to him. He did not want to feel as if he “had” to play a certain selection during every show.

Here is the colorful part of the account. While spinning this yarn, Bruce dropped the f-bomb (as the young people say :) ). A few people in the audience were shocked; this was the revered Eastern Music Festival after all. Bruce offset the minor negative response by placing his hands over his ears imitating the “Hear No Evil” pose of one of the monkeys in the well-known figurine. Everyone had a good laugh and the “Jack Straw” tale continued without incident.

You askd for it! My show report is now on the setlist page.

Now for the more personal observations:

    The Meetup
Great fun! If you ever get a chance to go to a pre-concert meetup do it! Drive, take the bus, rollerblade or ride a bicycle, just make it a point to get there. It’s a fantastic oppotunity to get to know other BIBs and SIBs (Brothers & Sisters In Bruce) as Lola calls us. People who don’t roll their eyes or give you a blank stare when you start talking about Bruce’s music. I’m usually extremely quiet around people I’ve just met,but I think I was more easily drawn out because I knew I was among friends. I know others who take the opportunity to get together before a show will also have a similaly positive experience.

    The Show
A different side of Bruce. He talked between songs more than I’ve seen him do before (but then, this was my first solo show). It seemed like more than just “stage banter;” he was so relaxed, even a disruptive audience member didn’t ruin the night.

    Meeting Bruce
Thanks to some extremely generous people,I was given the opportunity to meet Bruce after the show. He was as as open and unpretntious as everyone has described. He was talking to several people about various subjects. He encouraged one young fan (a young boy) to keep practicing the piano. Someone gave him a book about “The Andy Griffith Show” (Andy of Mayberry) and Bruce said he loved the character Ernest T. Bass. Most interesting of all, the song Gonna Be some Changes Made was mentioned. He said he really liked the version of that song on Caesar Salad! We were introduced, I thanked him
for playing my request (Sticks and Stones) and then I had my picture taken with Bruce. (Many thanks to the photographer)
I’ve told many people that meeting Bruce turned an extrordinary evening into an unforgettable one.

Just got back from doing some “advance scouting” of the Guilford College area. Here is my report:

    1. Meet-up: It seems the group of shops where Elizabeth’s Pizza is located is called Colonial Shoppes/Quaker Village. The signage one can see from the street while driving has “Colonial Shoppes” more prominently displayed. Elizabeth’s is located next to a store called BB’s Compact Discs.

    2. Walking to Guilford College: The college entrance across from Elizabeth’s is a side entrance-not the main entrance. It’s a fairly small campus;finding our way from the entrance to Dana Auditorium should be easy.

Hope this is helpful & not posted too late for the Road Scholars! See you all in Greensboro!

My top three Bruce song titles that would also be great race horse names:

    1. Talk Of The Town
    2. Cartoons and Candy
    3. King Of The Hill

The first two I chose for their use of alliteration-very poetic and easy to remember. (Sticks and Stones was disqualified because the song mentions broken bones; broken bones and horses shouldn’t be anywhere near each other).

King Of The Hill certainly sounds like the name of a Triple Crown winner.

Songs such as Lost Soul or Barren Ground didn’t make the list. They are great titles, but they don’t sound like winners to me.

    Trent,

If you happen to have the 10/26/04 (Blue Note-New York) dose of “Talk Of The Town,'” Bruce gives a very specific definition of this term. He could have been sharing a big joke with the audience, but I really think he was giving the real meaning.

Rich has the ‘rednecks” part right…the other word in the phrase is ahh, shall I say very “earthy” and I won’t write it here for fear of the banning stick & my own bashfulness. Some members of the Blue Note audience seemed a little shocked by the phrase if I remember correctly.

Maybe someone familiar with the dose could give a tactful hint for the second part of the phrase…
