I’ll never be able to listen to this song the same way again!

Didn’t I hear Bruce say in an interview somewhere that he was “turning into Frank Zappa”?

I was somewhat drawn out of several songs because of some of the word choice. Some of the vocabulary just seemed … how should I put it? … inconsequential. Songs about “drooling,” “crochet” and the like just seemed so unlike what Bruce had written about in the past.I still sometimes wonder if the lyrics hold up to the music on that record. Such word choice seemed more appropriate and to fit better on “Big Swing Face.” Was anyone else somewhat taken aback by the lyrical choices?
I admit I was surprised by some of the songs on “Halcyon Days” when I first heard them. But after the release of “Big Swing Face”, I’ve learned to expect the unexpected when I hear Bruce’s music.
Sure, some of the words used in the songs on “Halcyon Days” are unusual, but there are still many thought-provoking ideas. Granted, Gonna Be Some Changes Made appears to be light-hearted, but wait! Near the end of the song we hear, “A buffoon fumbling without a clue likes to shift the blame/And often feels betrayed, gonna be some changes made.” Serious moments can also be found in Dreamland, Circus On The Moon, Halcyon Days and Hooray For Tom.
I think I recall Bruce mentioning in some past interviews that he wants to make another album like “Big Swing Face” some day. Could his unique application of words be a step in that direction?

ParticipantDavid Day wrote:Also on Noisemakers is, “All I want from tomorrow is to play with JV everyday”.
What song is that from?]
That is from Jacob’s Ladder. I smile every time I hear that line!
But what’s the answer to your first JV trivia question? The only song I could think of was Michael Row The Boat Ashore, but I know that’s not it.

ParticipantI love the Noisemakers too. They constantly amaze me with their musical skill…BUT today I’ve been listening to some great doses from 8/26/04 Nashville,TN. Ricky Skaggs plays during Mandolin Rain and The Way It Is. Ricky and Bruce take both those songs to some amazing jazzy/bluesy places! Maybe they’ll wander off the bluegrass path again during some of their upcoming shows. I know it wouldn’t be the same as a Noisemakers show, but it would be very interesting….

ParticipantI love J.V.’s playing on any bluegrass version of Jacob’s Ladder! Rainbow’s Cadillac (8/15/06-Knoxville,TN) and Talk Of The Town (8/24/06-Wolf Trap) are two other unforgettable J. V. moments in my book. J.V.’s contagious enthusiasm and joy of playing his instrument constantly shine through; I think I enjoy those things most of all. Thanks J.V.!

That is a fantastic example of Bobby Read’s talent! When you listen to it, you might think, “Oh, that’s just another one of Bobby’s great solos.” This is like saying, “Oh, that’s just another one of Michelangelo’s great works of art.” He plays so consistently well, we may tend to take his talent for granted. (At least, this is my reaction sometimes…).
Some of my favorite Bobby Read moments:
*The Valley Road –Here Come The Noise Makers
*End Of The Innocence-December 2, 2004-Chicago, IL-Bruce Hornsby Live release
*any time he plays during The Tide Will Rise or The Show Goes OnJackie

ya know I’m not sure i like this idea of people going to school to learn music. I learn 100x more jamming with people.but yeah, sonny would’ve been a perfect choice. ah well – it’ll be interesting nonetheless.
I’m not going to comment about music school vs. jamming-except to say that I think Bruce’s music school background has contributed a lot to the way he makes music today.
I agree with “the two Davids” about Sonny;I’d love to hear/see him play an all jazz album & show.
I listened to the interview of Jack DeJohnette (Jazz Trio album drummer) Dana posted on another thread. He sounds like a cool gentleman & a fantastic musician.
I think we really need to hear from DavidR on this topic; he seems know lots of great information about the various musicians on this album.

What a great story! It’s a testament to the wonderful things that can happen when someone has a tenacious spirit. It also shows what a nice guy Bruce can be-how he enjoys the shows as much as we do!

ParticipantHmmm…So far, I would have to cast my vote for carey. Or should we wait until the 2007 tour is over before the votes are tallied?
On a somewhat different note, I nominate gdwoman for a Road Scholar (More Than) Honorable Mention just for using the following:

ParticipantThe song is on the 1998 Randy Scruggs CD entitled Crown Of Jewels. The album features Randy playing & singing with other artists (Joan Osborne,Travis Tritt,Bruce,of course and lots of others).
The information underneath the lyrics to “Crown Of Jewels” in the CD booklet reads “1998 Warner-Chappell Music ASCAP”, so I guess that’s the answer.
Hope this is helpful to you.

ParticipantSi was right. This contest was harder than it sounded! It was fun trying to find all the references.
I psyched myself out while looking for answers though. If the question stated: “name three songs…” I thought there were only three correct answers. I’ve got to loosen up!

ParticipantI would love to hear Carry The Water live. It’s one of my 3 favorite songs from that album. (Barren Ground and These Arms of Mine are the other two).
When I’m listening to that song and feeling really brave,I try singing along with the background vocals… 😆

Scott,
Google the phrase “magic underwear mormon” and peruse the articles. I’m not sure if any of the statements in them are reliable, but they make interesting reading.
I think this is what Bruce is referring to in that particular line.
