Excuse me while I mark one more day off my calender…One day closer to the shows!

ParticipantI loved Fly On The Wall. What great imagery! It’s like you’re right there in that dingy room watching everything happen… I guess I’d describe it as the classic early Bruce sound mixed with a little Eagles harmony.

would you mind organizaing the meetup at Charlotte if that happens?I’d be glad to!
By the way, has a little bird been whispering to you about a potential Charlotte show or is this just an intuition? You know, like when someone knows it’s going to rain when their knee or elbow tingles? 😆

ParticipantI’ve been pondering this thread for a while. Guess this can be filed under: “for what it’s worth”-with apologies to Buffalo Springfield.
Last year I was given the opportunity to attend a corporate show featuring Bruce and the Noise Makers. The show was fantastic!
My observation about the corporate show I attended:
Yes, Bruce exhibited some acerbic wit by poking fun at the pretentious name of the event. However, I didn’t see this as demeaning; I just thought he was trying to grab the attention or make a connection with the audience. The majority of the crowd that evening seemed more interested in “networking” and talking on their cell phones than enjoying the music.Might Bruce’s comments about the “Go Canes” note he received at the recent corporate show have been a simple attempt to grab the audience’s attention too?
In the “reader comments” section of the corporate show article, some audience members wrote that they walked out during the show. They were surprised when Bruce commented about their behavior. Later in their remarks, they say they knew Bruce would say something if they made an exit. Why were they upset if they knew this was going to happen?
Perhaps the event was just a case of people “expecting one thing and getting another,” as some other concert-goers wrote.
A quote that keeps appearing is: “He doesn’t have to do this kind of event.” Does anyone know if this statement is actually true? Maybe there is a contractual or other obligation of which we are unaware.
Am I being over-sensitive about this topic? Perhaps, but it seems to me that the folks who attended the show and then commented about it are acting in a slightly unreasonable way. They didn’t get the “just-like-the-record” concert they expected and were deeply disappointed. I can empathize with them, but I also feel they should have been a bit more open-minded. Easier said than done.

I hope this was a compliment about their ability to hold ground; it could just as easily have been a comment about Southern stubbornness!
We should really get Miss Virginia Former’s answer to this-she’s the history authority…

Speaking of unforgettable songs-the one I can’t stop hearing in my head is Look Out Any Window (the Intersections version); it’s so amazing!

ParticipantI got the CD today and I love it! My favorite song is Gulf of Mexico Fishing Boat Blues. Just to get a slightly more objective opinion, I played it for my friend Kebe who is from Senegal. He hadn’t heard of Bruce until last year when he accompanied us to the Biltmore show. (What a great introduction to Bruce’s music that was!) He enjoyed the first three songs, but when he heard Mandolin Rain, that was it! He loves the new version of the song.
He had only heard the first 2 measures of the song when he said, “That’s the song Bruce had to stop and tell the guy to shut up, isn’t it?” I said yes it was and sat back marveling at my friend’s memory… I told him as much about Ricky Skaggs as I knew. As we kept talking and listening to the music, Kebe told me the banjo originated in Gambia, a country close to Senegal. I love learning things like that!
Anyway, the album gets two votes of “10”-one from Kebe and one from me!

ParticipantI think Bruce demonstrated different develpomental leaps on both albums. His concentration on two hand independence really stood out on Spirit Trail. Halcyon Days revealed Bruce’s humorous and tender sides to the average Top 40 listener who may have been previously unaware of them.
In a nutshell, Spirit Trail was a musical leap, Halcyon Days a lyrical one.

ParticipantDavid,
Yes two hand independence on a trombone would be quite difficult-I’m not that good
. Maybe James Pankow could pull it off…
Also, thanks for the compliment-I’m blushing and typing at the same time!

ParticipantDavid Day wrote:Why is it you like Bruce’s music so much? Does Bruce play in sharps & flats vs majors? Does Bruce change keys in the middle of a song vs 3 or 4 chord stuff? Does Bruce tend to change his tempos? Is it the two hand independence thing? Is it the difficulty of his music? Be specific! My answer is, “All of the above.” Bruce constantly amazes me with the things he does musically.
Another reason I like Bruce’s music is harder to define. Maybe it has to do with the way he voices chords or his singing style. I only know when I unexpectedly hear one of Bruce’s songs, my spirit gets lighter and the day instantly gets better. Not a very technical answer, I know, but that is as specific as I can get.

David,
Believe it or not,I play trombone. I was named “Best Girl Trombonist” four years in a row! 😆. I don’t play much these days; I prefer playing with a group of people and the old fashioned “town band” seems to be a thing of the past.Jackie

ParticipantI’ve also enjoyed reading and responding to the current topics on the forum. It’s so great to be able to interact with people who don’t say, “Bruce who?” or “He was popular a long time ago, right?”, when I mention my favorite musician.
The topics I’ve really appreciated are “Favorite Hornsby Lyric” and “Two Hand Independence.” The second thread takes me back to the days in the high school concert band and music theory class. I’ve even found myself trying to tap sixteenths with my left hand and triplets with my right hand during my “down time” at work!

ParticipantRe: My two cents
Victor wrote:But is there a meaningful, galvanizing artist out there like Lennon or Dylan, for example? To me, some of the best music ever written was during the tumultuous, war-torn years of the 60s and 70s … songs of protest and pro-humanism. We need this type of art now more than ever. We’ve sat back and allowed a Commander-in-Chief to usurp power from the American people, one who made the masses think it’s OK to allow its government to tap its phones because of a bit of propaganda known as the “Patriot” Act.
Victor and Rich have touched on some interesting points. After reading their recent posts, I began to wonder, “Did protest songs actually bring about any change?”
I used to wish I had been a young adult when songs like “The Times They Are A-Changin” and “Give Peace A Chance” were popular-when music meant something.
But decades after these songs were written, war and all kinds of prejudice still exist.
Am I being too impatient? Do the seeds this music planted need more time to grow? Music is extremely important to me; I really want to believe it can change the world. I try to put into practice the things I learn from songs like “The Way It Is” and “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” But is that enough? I know other people are also listening and acting upon the ideas music such as this creates. When will the time of peace and harmony arrive-or am I hoping for too much too soon?

ParticipantMy answer to this question is, “Definitely not!” Maybe I’m being too literal, but I don’t think Bruce is anywhere near his peak. When I hear the word peak, I think of someone who is climbing a mountain, reaching the summit and is now on the way down the mountain. As Bruce himself has said, he’s “a lifelong music student.” Who knows which path he’ll explore next or what he’ll accomplish on that journey? An example from his musical exploration so far: Did anyone expect anything like Big Swing Face before it was released?
On the subject of Halcyon Days-it’s a great album! Yes, several of the songs are contemplative, but remember the motivation behind a lot of them, parenthood and the responsibilities that go along with it. As for live versions of songs from this record, I really enjoy hearing “Candy Mountain Run” and “Gonna Be Some Changes Made” live.
I agree that Harbor Lights was a significant step in Bruce’s musical trek. The title song, “Talk Of The Town,” “Long Tall Cool One,” as well as several other songs have a great jazz feel.
I don’t think Bruce has peaked; I do think he has had various highlights or as DavidR said,” Developmental leaps” in his career.
