Thanks for correcting my geographic igorance! 😳 That’s what I get for relying on Google and Wikipedia.
There’s this old building downtown; I think they call it a “library.” Maybe I’ll try using it the next time I have a geographical question. That’s cool about the location for the picture on the album!

ParticipantLocation of the “Roadside Shack”?
Miss Virginia Former,
I remember Bruce mentioning in an introduction to “Down The Road Tonight” (from one of the Daily Doses) that the pkace in the song was located in “James County.” The closeset place I could find with that name was James City County,VA, which Wikipedia says borders Williamsburg. I guess the guys had to cross the county line to have their fun.

ParticipantThis is a very thought-provoking topic. Many of you have already addressed views about the music industry that are similar to my own. Having said that, here is my contribution:
I think the easy availability of music (at least in the US) today has made many people take it for granted. Someone can get the latest release or order the CD online with just a click of the mouse. Don’t get me wrong, I love Amazon, but the excitement of going into a record store and perusing the displays to see what treasures you could unearth is all but lost. Gone is the time when you stood in the aisle of the store with the two albums you HAD to have, fiercely debating with yourself over which one to leave behind because of shortness of funds. This dilemma made the acquisition of the chosen record all the sweeter.
Along this same line, I think the MP3 format has also taken something away from music. Unwrapping the cellophane from the record, tape or CD still causes me to feel as if I were opening a wonderful gift. Once the music was unwrapped, you opened it up to find there were usually lyrics and liner notes to read while you were listening to your new music. A digital booklet just isn’t the same.
Variety in mainstream music is something else that has fallen by the wayside. I remember when I could hear country, R&B, rock and pop music on one radio station. Now, with a few notable exceptions, radio stations play only one type of music. To (very) loosely quote Bruce “Top 40 radio today is all about a good singer and a catchy song.”
Unfortunately, that is pretty much all you hear on the radio these days. Please don’t get me wrong, I appreciate some aspects of the modern advancement in the music industry, but at the same time, I feel these advancements has taken away the “specialness” music used to have in many people’s lives.

ParticipantMy thoughts about this album pretty much mirror Carey’s-except I bought the cassette instead of the vinyl copy… I really liked all the radio hits from the rcord, especially the title track (Wow, a cool-sounding song with a message!) I was also drawn to “Down The Road Tonight”. I loved the bluesy sound & could just see that same story taking place In my home town.

There’s a place
A local roadside shack
A poor man’s Paris with parking in the backI said-Don’t tell me she don’t love me
The money’s just a mere formalityThey said-What they’re doing
Don’t mean nothing to you now
But someday it’ll mean everythingtreah

ParticipantThe lyrics are below. I haven’t heard anything about Biltmore yet,I’m getting anxious wondering if there’s going to be a show this year…
Jackie
She came from the backwoods
Bright teeth, stylish hair
Good fortune and everyone’s smiles
Followed her everywhere
Had a taste for the good life
Had some stars in her eyes
Thought she would have it all
Once her name was in lightsCHORUS
Hey, hey little Miss Jane
Sunny day turned to hard rain
Traded in your evening gown
For a jumpsuit of pain
The beauty queen and the wallflower
Feel the same in their darkest hours
All watch as the crown of jewels
Falls from the old guard towerShe walked down the runway
A crown of jewels she wore
Applause and lights, but at the end of the night
She was the first out the door
Drove all night at high speed
Arrived in the early daylight
Flash of a knife, a nice evening dress
Couldn’t change her man’s mindCHORUS
Stage moms and hair-sprayed charms
No one there could have sounded an alarm
I don’t know why you think it’s so strange
Any kind of act is within anyone’s rangeCHORUS

ParticipantDavid,
Thanks for the valuable kudos information. I’m sending 2 kudos your way…just call it a “consulting fee”! (One for the bearish side and one for the bullish side of the kudos market.) 😆

ParticipantAllisa,
That’s a great idea! When I first saw your request, I was thinking more along the lines of putting it on a poster, t-shirt, etc. – but your concept is much cooler!Jackie

ParticipantAllisa,
I am just now getting around to letting you know that I LOVE your request. You eloquently(and creatively) put into words how I feel. I wish Bruce would get a request like this at every show.

ParticipantSi, I like the site just the way it is! Although the idea of a streaming chat feature does sound interesting… My favorite thing on this site is,of course, the daily dose. Old or new, I love them all. Thanks for taking the time to keep us akk well-informed and entertained.

ParticipantAllisa,
Thanks for the links. I always learn something new & interesting when Bruce gives an interview (like the comments he shared about Art Tatum-now THAT’S dedication!).

Tidings of comfort and joy to you! Ever since I heard about the making of the jazz record,I’ve been waiting anxiously for its release. I have a feeling we’ve only gotten just a taste of what Bruce can do with the “jazz language.”Jackie

ParticipantHi David!
I’ve watched the video of “The Mighty Quinn” at least two times, but I really never noticed the other players (shame on me!). The guitar player behind BB King is Jeff Baxter. He’s played with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. I don’t know what other instruments he plays, but I do know his nickname is “Skunk.”
You had a lesson with him? Seriously? I’m impressed! (and I’m not saying that sarcastically…). Really cool.

ParticipantDavid,
It finally hit me this week…”Look Out Any Window” DOES remind me of a sunrise! I was on my daily commute to work riding the public transit mini-bus from the city where I live to the city where I work when it happened. The sun began to rise as I was listening to the aforementioned song and voila! A beautiful sunrise began. The pinks and purples were breath-taking. I started to smile and thought to myself, “So this is what David has been writing about!”
I suppose the time change also had something to do with this unexpected event; I’m usually inside loading vending machines when the sun rises. This past week I was given the opportunity to see it. That same day I was even inspired to get out and enjoy the sun and glorious fall colors.
Thanks for planting the seed…

Wow, that is such a generous offer; I really appreciate the kind thought. Unfortunately, I must decline. My better half and I are getting together with some old friends this weekend to celebrate what we jokingly call my “birth-month” (one day just isn’t enough
Maybe next time…
Call out one good “Bruuuce!” for me!
