ParticipantI think I remember either hearing an interview or reading something about Mr. D.E. I think Bruce said Mr. D.E. was what many people might refer to as the “shop teacher” (I think we called the class Industrial Arts at my high school). For the life of me, I can’t remember what D.E. actually stands for…
Miss Virginia Former, I promise,I’m not ignoring you. When I try to remove you from the Ignore list,I can’t seem to do it. I’ll keep trying.I don’t even remeber putting you on that list, maybe it was my evil twin!

ParticipantHi David!
OK, I see your point now. The era of “Bush the Elder” had completely slipped my mind. Though there have been relatives elected as president before (* John Adams and John Quincy Adams {father and son} *William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison {grandfather and grandson-I think}). Maybe we Americans like things in succession. Could it be because we were once ruled by a king and are unconsciously partial to the idea of a royal family?
Bruce as a modern-day prophet? Hmm, I may be coming around to the notion…
Miss Virginia Former: PLEASE post those pictures if you can! We’d love to see them!

ParticipantWas the song prophetic? I don’t think that’s the case. I’ve always interpreted it as Bruce’s views about the sorry state of American politics and just plain old hypocrisy in general. But, I’ve been wrong many times before.
Lyrics that speak to me:
The congregation’s waiting at the altar
They can’t find the preacher anywhere
They found him with the new girl from the choir
Where they store the boxes of the book of prayerAround the time this record came out, I was coming to the realization (as many young adults do) that people in positions of leadership aren’t always what they seem. Defenders of the Flag expresses that perfectly. And I agree it IS an amazing song in concert. Thanks for giving me a brand new way to look at one of my favorite old songs.

ParticipantWow, this is eerie! I was listening to “Halcyon Days” a couple of days ago and thought of the same medley. I wrote the idea down for the purpose of adding it to Si’s “Unusual Requests” list next summer. Guess the ESP vibe on the east coast was working overtime this week; or maybe I was just tuning in to Top 40 radio way too much in the late 70s

ParticipantBiltmore Show
Hey David!
Unfortunately, we’re not staying at the Inn. We live about 3 hours away from Asheville, and the package price for the concert and accommodations is a little too rich for our blood. Plus, we’re self-employed,so it’s hard to get away, even for a day.(I know…excuses, excuses…) Even if we don’t run into each other on the 11th, it’s great to trade messages with someone who is as excited as I am about the show!

ParticipantVirginia,
My husband and I are also going to make Aug. 11-13 a Bruce weekend (and we’re attending a wedding in Virginia on the 12th-whew!) Your husband and mine are cut from the same cloth. The conversation went something like this:
“We’re going to see Bruce in Asheville; you’ve seen him once already this year, isn’t that enough?”
Me: “Are you kidding? You can never see Bruce and the Noisemakers too many times.”
See you there!

ParticipantWhere’s Rainbow?
Hey Si,
I’ve really been enjoying the recent doses from Bruce’s summer tour. However,I seem to be missing the July 21 dose (“Rainbow’s Cadillac”). It’s listed on the homepage, but I can’t locate it after I log in. Am I missing something obvious? Have I snoozed and lost? Or is it a symptom of heat stroke?
Thank you (and Will) for giving us access to all the great music.

ParticipantDeadEd,
I’ll be there with my husband and a friend of ours. Our friend has never been to a Bruce Hornsby show; we’ve told him he’s in for a real treat! See you there…

ParticipantHere are my forgotten gems:
“Down the Road Tonight”
“Sunlight Moon”
“So Out”
“The Tango King”
“The Road Not Taken”Last year, I brought the words to “So Out” and “Till the Dreaming’s Done” to Biltmore. Maybe I’ll try again this year.

ParticipantOK, here is my list for this year. Some may think these choices strange (i.e. weird), I prefer the word eclectic. “Built For Comfort” Howlin’ Wolf, “Cry Baby Cry” The Beatles, “Every Time I Turn Around (Back in Love Again)” LTD and “You’re Famous Baby” Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra-I love the quirkiness of this one. Add one more request for the demo tape songs to the list too!
Thanks for your kind indulgence.

ParticipantWhat other genres
David,
Thanks for the piano blues recommendations. Your suggestions of Pinetop Perkins and Professor Longhair jogged my memory-haven’t thought about them since a long-ago Jazz Appreciation class. I’ll have to get reacquainted. Regarding your ealier post about the 5/19/99 daily dose, thank you again! I’ve been listening to the official live releases and letting the doses accumulate. Since your mention of it, the Orlando dose is now tied with “How Far Am I From Canaan?’ from 3/26/99 as ny all time favorite.

droppeddminer,
“Crossroads”-YES! I hadn’t thought of that one.
Here are some blues songs I would love to hear. I know several of them are guitar driven,so if not these exact songs, something in a similar vein:
1. “Built for Comfort” Howlin’ Wolf 2. ” Coffee Blues” Mississippi John Hurt 3. “Monday Morning Blues” Mississippi John Hurt 4. ” Hoochie Coochie Man” Muddy Waters 5. “Mannish Boy” Muddy Waters 6. “Sinner’s Prayer” John Lee Hooker 7. ” County Jail Blues” Johnnie Temple 8. “Wonder Why” Lightnin’ Hopkins and (my husband’s suggestion) “Mighty Crazy” Lightnin’ Hopkins.

ParticipantWhat other genres
Si,
The gospel choir idea is great! How about the blues genre? I know I’ve heard some blues-influenced music in both the live and studio recordings, but i’d like to hear Bruce’s take on a whole straight-out blues song. I’ve heard him quote Leon Russell’s opinion that the blues is “the music of the vulgate”-I’m not sure if he agrees with the quote or simply finds it quite humorous (as I do).

ParticipantI find this topic very thought-provoking. I know many people who do indeed use MP3s as “aural wallpaper” to close themselves off from the annoyances in the outside world for awhile. Personally, I have found that the MP3 format has given me the opportunity to hear music I otherwise might never have considered listening to. As Will S. has said, most commercial radio in the US is a joke (at least it is in my neck of the woods). Satellite radio can provide some interesting choices, but I’ve found I have to scan through several channels to find something that really catches my ear-maybe that’s just adult A.D.D. kicking in.
I believe people’s passion for music can change as they age/mature. As a teenager, I listened to the same radio station all the time; I didn’t care what they played. In college, I was exposed to a variety of music and became a more discriminating listener. Today, music on the internet is allowing me to refine my musical palate even more. I think it all depends on how people use the MP3-they can download or create an unoriginal playlist or do a little searching and find music that really peaks their interest.

ParticipantWhat else is in your CD player
Here is my list, some records are new, some are old standbys: Fair and Square (John Prine), Mercy Now (Mary Gauthier), Lightnin’ Hopkins in New York, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons (Lorin Mazel, et al) American IV: The Man Comes Around (Johnny Cash) Mercury Falling (Sting). I enjoy listening to the two versions of “I Hung My Head” from the Sting and Johnny Cash CDs back to back.
I’m always looking for interesting music, I’ll try to check out some of the CDs you guys have mentioned.
Thanks!
