ParticipantHey M3! It was a great little show! The three openers really floored me!
Fatherhood and life in general have kept me from participating here as much as I would like, but I hope to have more free time soon! Take care!

ParticipantMIssed the Boulder show and was glad to see the Botanic Gardens show, even though we were way late and arrived just in time to see Bruce. He was only allowed to play until 9:30 and got started at about 8 p.m. He definitely kept it up-tempo to get as much in as possible…

ParticipantThis IS an interesting discussion! I think it’s another example of how Bruce’s history of generousness and musical restlessness comes back to bite him in the end.
In other words, if he’d always instituted the policy of charging for “Meet and Greets” … or a policy of not allowing fan taping … or of not giving away his songs to friends … it seems he could have made a good deal more cash up-front through the years. However, it seems to me he’d also have given up a ton of the “good will” he’s earned as a result of his excessive kindness and flexibility over the years. All that good karma seems like it’s paid off pretty well in loyalty from fans and fellow artists alike.
Another way he could have made some extra bank, if he’d wanted, would have been to play the “Standards” tour … or a Dead tribute, or the Christmas album … or to have maintained a style more in keeping with his early hits. Since he’s said that would have been a creative prison (and since most of us are thankful to have gone along on the journey), he (and we) have to expect a dropoff in gate. There’s just not a huge fanbase for jazz/bluegrass/rock/modern classical/solo piano/accordion/dulcimer-musicians/playwrights/maestros/singers/songwriters out there, even though we all love it.
In conclusion, while most of us appreciate Bruce waxing-on about the virtues of dodecaphony and improvisation, we’ll have to expect his new management to try to cash-in on these types of “VIP” events to recoup the losses that result. I can’t pay for these things — I’ll continue “loitering about” — but I’m sure several will be willing to.

ParticipantStorytime … OK. But let’s keep it out of the bathroom, OK??? 😳
That same Chattanooga show in 2005 happened to be my first! Imagine that — a fan since ’86 but never a live show in almost 20 years! Although I was late to the game, I couldn’t have picked a better one: a nearly-packed, beautifully restored Tivoli Theatre; R.S. standing in; and Bruce complimenting my lengthy list of requests before playing a spectacular and rare “River Runs Low” after the break.
I remember a couple in white dancing a wonderful birthday dance as Bruce inserted a few lines of “Happy Birthday to You” in “Big Stick.” I recall Bruce opening with a stellar duet with R.S. that he described as “musings” on a Ricky and Bruce number (a number that apparently didn’t make the cut on the “R&B” album; at least, I don’t recognize it). As Bruce opened with a solo “Night on the Town,” he remarked after a couple of notes what a “good-sounding” hall it was; I have yet to hear better accoustics and sound.
To me, that concert was the perfect mix of ballads and dance music, of slow and fast … of early material and newer songs. It was just the perfect blend of solo Bruce and Bruce with the Noisemakers. There was plenty of experimenting and improvising; lots of classical thrown in there. I’ll admit: I had kind of jumped off the bandwagon about the time of “Big Swing Face” … I had heard a couple of brief snippets of BSF material and was taken aback at the lack of piano and the direction Bruce was going. So to hear “The Chill” for the first-ever time at this concert, I realized immediately how incorrect my first assumptions were. Now, I’m the world’s biggest promoter of BSF to anyone and everyone I come across.
I ordered a CD recording of that live Chattanooga show and have literally worn-out the white “paint” covering the CD. I’ve played it so many times, I’m in danger of losing some of it to scratches and overuse. I hardly knew DD back then, but he was there; so was Jonathan, who had his camera and posted great pictures. I got to hang around and meet the whole band briefly.
I don’t know; I’m sure that first show will always hold a special place, but I keep hoping another show will surpass it in my mind. Right now, I’m holding out for hearing a couple more rarities that I haven’t come across, such as “Barren Ground,” “Another Day,” “Pastures of Plenty”, or even “Invisible.” Haven’t heard any of those live-and-in-person yet. will keep trying.
Victor
ParticipantI can see why you thought that, M3. They have that similar “Irish” pub sound to them.
Isn’t that Ben Affleck doing the voiceover, giving it his best “Bostonian” accent – ?

ParticipantRe: “Bruce Hornsby Is Back From The Dead To Make A Little No
T: I love the way Bruce is soooo aware of the camera and looks right in there and *holds* that stare! 😆 Not quite ready for prime time!
I think Bruce met JT on the night Bruce and Henley performed “Innocence” at the Grammys. JT was Henley’s keyboard “tech.”
All these trivia items would have made great questions for Si in Round 6 of “Last Fan Standing,” but I guess we’ve ruined that for him!
Sorry Si!

Yeah … “Strut” and “Sugar Walls” — how could you have missed them!?!
Victor
ParticipantDid anybody see my Facebook post? It was an obscure reference to the Will Ferrell NSL “Cowbell” sketch … Bruce didn’t comment, but I hope it made him smile a bit.
Jackie and another person noticed and “liked” it anyway!

ParticipantCome to Denver in July!

ParticipantThanks for the reports, guys — and for the link, Kat. I guess I’ve missed a lot of Facebook updates.
I’m digging the stage design and quality look of the proceedings. Wish I could be there….
And that Bob Cuccioli plays one creepy-looking BSTD!

ParticipantRe: Bruce plays the music of SCKBSTD at the VSC/Wells Theate
Sounds like it was a night to remember! One of my life’s joys is hearing a new Hornsby song for the first time. To hear a new one for the first time — live — is all the more special. Simple Prayer is one of my favorites, so I can’t wait to hear the “Reprise”!
Really looking forward to seeing the musical one day (fingers crossed!) — and purchasing the “Songs from SCKBSTD” record!
Thanks,Aaron!

Participant@ MVF! 😆 A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my BiBs and SiB’s, as MVF would say!
Be safe and here’s hoping 2011 is your best year yet!

ParticipantGreat news! Thanks for keeping us updated, Bryan. How’s this sound for a spring break trip?:
Fly from Colorado to San Francisco; rent a car and drive from San Francisco through Northern California wine country; cruise up along the Oregon coast; visit Seattle and move on to Richmond, British Columbia, Canada? Then, win enough money at the River Rock Casino to pay for the whole journey before catching Bruce and the Noisemakers and flying back?
Maybe it’ll work out!

ParticipantA quick perusal of the Bruce Base shows “At the Meeting,” “How Far Am I From Canaan?” and “The Old Rugged Cross” might fit what you’re looking for. Fan recordings probably exist for some of those.

ParticipantI’m going to stop posting now.
At least, I’ll try to put a moratorium on stupid posts.
The “20/20” lyrics just sounded like they might come from the stalker/peeping Tom/Paperboy/SCKBSTD character from the musical, I guess. A haunting song nonetheless. I guess I should look up that Charlie Haden & Friends album Jackie mentioned.
And I AM looking forward to hearing the Bat song and those others Bruce sang at the recent show…
Cheers,
Dumba$$Victor
ParticipantMary, oh wise and all-knowing one, I happily stand corrected yet again.
;p
By the way, this is my first time hearing “20/20 Vision.” I’m loving the creative places the musical is taking Bruce. This IS from the musical, right? It sounds as if it could be an old-time classic bluegrass balad.
I distinctly recall the first time I heard many of these 20-or-so songs he’s written for SCKBSTD. “Low Country” was live in Louisville, “Paperboy” on the Levitate album, and “Soon Enough” right here thanks to Si and the taping community.
It’s so fun to hear Bruce sing a new song that I’ve never heard, especially when he’s testing them out live for the first time.

ParticipantWOW! What a treat! An early Christmas present … This was the last show Bruce performed in 2009 before his voice went down and before he cancelled the 2010 dates.
I saw him in Denver the night before but was unable to go see this great performance in Boulder the next night!
Thanks so much!

ParticipantUGA loses to COLORADO (?!?!?!?) then whips the Vols??? How’s THAT happen?
UGA VIII looks pretty cool, though.
Hope you’re having a big ol’ ball, Mr. Day!

ParticipantI laugh every time I hit the “Music” button, and I get the “Music — Coming Soon!” line, as if Bruce were some freshman artist about to release his first disc of music! 😡

ParticipantThanks, Aaron! This benefit concert is the sort of selflessness that is all too rare today, but something we’ve come to expect of — and appreciate from — Bruce and his family.
JT in wedding dress with JV on his arm will be priceless! JT will make a LOVELY bride! I wonder if he wore white?!?!?! ;p

ParticipantHeeeeyyyyyy … I thought I clicked on “Community” and nothing happened. You’ve just got the magic touch, Mary! ;p
