ParticipantI think most people like me who have no musical talent and don’t speak the language usually overlook the contributions of the bass player. But J.V.’s so good and so genuinely personable that everyone has to take notice. How many other bass players can pull off solos the way he does???
After meeting him briefly in Chattanooga a couple of years ago, I told him on his Web site’s guest book that I think he must have the best karma possible, and I think that still holds true. Plus, I understand he has family ties to Tennessee… that can only be a plus!
By the way, the upright bass player for Ricky Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder, Mark Fain, is no slouch himself. And he’s from my hometown!

ParticipantNice to be a member of The Team. Such a sense of belonging!
And it’s a wonderful feeling knowing I have the power to muzzle David Day at any time of my choosing.
As I told Si, I barely know how to turn on my computer, but I’m happy to help out while Si attends to his health.

We could get 5 people to spell B-R-U-C-E on their T-shirts!
(Or 8 people to spell B-R-U-U-U-C-E-!) But I get to be the Exclamation Mark if we do that!
(Or, 10 people to spell B-R-U-U-U-C-E-.C-O-M)
You get the idea…
Friday the 13th in Raleigh!

I like MVF’s interpretation. It fits neatly with “Backdraft,” but I was under the impression that the song pre-dates the film and was just added to the soundtrack after it appeared on “Scenes from the Southside.”
I always had the impression, like Rich, that those “sad-eyed sisters” were among those “standing in judgement.” Have I been wrong all these years?

Why all the hatin’ on the lovely Skaggs family and a nice Southern gospel tune or two?
I’d say I’m more spiritual than religious, but I enjoy a nice hymn now and then…

For someone on “hiatus,” you certainly get a lot of work done on the site, Si!
Good luck on your operation. We’ll be keeping you in mind…

My Gawd, Aaron! Very jealous down here in North Georgia! Love the Leftwichian additions!
Anybody tape this? Just joking. Hope it is released in some form at some point!

Hey David,
Holland as in Amsterdam? Or as in Holland, MI? If the latter, I wish I could have gone, based on that set list Si posted. Bruce is rolling out the new stuff for the summer!

Carey, you went to New York and didn’t even have a ticket in hand?!? Your resourcefulness never ceases to amaze! Wish I could have been there to claim ticket #29 — did anybody use it?
I had planned to stay up and watch this, but … wouldn’t you know … I fell asleep! Boy, I AM getting old! 😳 Hopefully, it will be posted to YouTube or something…

Participantthinking…
I might be wrong, but didn’t taping Bruce first come into play during his time with The Dead? Isn’t that kind of specific to a Deadhead/jam band audience? I just ask because I’ve never been a big Dead fan or a taper, and the two seem to go hand-in-hand.
If so, could this policy be Bruce’s attempt to step away from that influence a bit? It’s been a while since “The Other Ones” now, and though Bruce obviously still has affectionate feelings for those days and that music, I wonder if he isn’t trying to “flip” his audience similar to the way he did a few years ago with the “top 40” crowd.
Do any Dead/Bruce fans believe this to be the case? If so, are you offended? I personally would like to hear Bruce do an all-Dead cover album, since I enjoy his take on their stuff. He often praises Garcia and the Dead catalog of music, but he doesn’t seem so impressed with Dead fans:
“‘Jack Straw,’ that’s been sort of this thorn in our side for years, having done that, because so many Deadheads are just so sort of tunnel-visioned, so myopic, they’re just so into that one thing.” — Bruce, from a recent interview (one of the ones Dana Nejedlova posted here; I forget which).
Thoughts, feelings?

What?!?!? You didn’t have an extra ticket for me???
Did they introduce or explain the song at all? A song about a dessert thief almost begs for an explanation. Too bad they didn’t have time to chat afterward. Most importantly, was there a sighting of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog?
I wish they’d get time on SNL…

ParticipantTouching all the bases
Bruce may not have intended the pedophilia interpretation, but I’ll bet it at least crossed the mind of 75 percent of his listeners. And Bruce has that darker side, so I wouldn’t put it past him…
Does anybody remember Adam Sandler’s “Canteen Boy” skits with Alec Baldwin on “Saturday Night Live”? Pretty funny stuff. 😆

I also pretty much did the minimum requested. But I had fun finding these. Those eight “Dreams” were surprisingly difficult for me, so I included a couple of obscure references to what could be considered “dreams.”
I didn’t include the specific lyrics from each song, but trust me, they ARE there — except for maybe the last two; I kind of guessed on 9 & 10 (and probably 5, too) …
1. Eight “DREAMS”
– Til the Dreamings Done
– Shadow Hands
– Across the River
– Fields of Gray
– Dreamland
– Nobody There But Me
– Halcyon Days
– Mirror on the Wall
– Lost Soul “Somewhere between two worlds”
– Another Day “As I closed my eyes I saw in my mind”2. Seven “ROADs”
– The Valley Road
– The Road Not Taken
– Down the Road Tonight
– I Will Walk with You
– The Old Playground
– A Night on the Town
– Lost Soul3. Four “BOATs”
– Gulf of Mexico Fishing Boat Blues
– Mandolin Rain
– Look Out Any Window
– Lost Soul4. Three “CANDYs”
– Candy Mountain Run
– Cartoons and Candy
– King of the Hill5. Three “CLOWNs”
– Pete & Manny
– Circus on the Moon
– Gonna Be Some Changes Made6. Two “KINGs OF THE HILL”
– King of the Hill
– Stander on the Mountain7. Two “SUNs”
– Walk in the Sun
– Place Under the Sun
– Carry the Water
– Nobody There But Me8. Two “ACROSS THE RIVERs”
– Across the River
– Lost Soul9. Two “ELEPHANTs”
– Circus on the Moon
– Candy Mountain Run10. One “UNDERWEAR”
– Sticks & StonesVictor
ParticipantNight on the Town
Other than Big Swing Face, Night on the Town is Bruce’s most underrated album in my opinion. Jackie mentions some good ones I’d like to hear live. I think it does hurt that Bruce doesn’t have a female backup singer at his disposal these days.
Victor
ParticipantThanks David
I’m glad to get the “Mormon Underwear” explanation. However, Heir Gordon was, and always will be, a pedophile to me.
Si, do you have a section for lyric analysis of “Halcyon Days”?
If not, maybe this can be the start of that. I’d love to hear more interpretations of this song and the rest of the album.

Am I the last person to discover Regina Spektor and “Begin to Hope”? Like Bruce, classically trained, a myriad of influences, and oh-so-clever!

I’ve been a fan since I read “Player Piano” in another life. It’s still one of my favorite books. He was an interesting, unique man and will be missed.

As you probably know now, there were at least five professors killed in the tragedy. I don’t know which is more sad — to see these talented individuals struck down, or their students, who were only just discovering their potential.
