Nice work, David! Cafe Portofino looks great.
Is it just me, or are the hotels a little pricey in Boone? I guess they have the market cornered up there on the mountain! I’ll have to figure out what to do. Camping along the Parkway sounds kinds fun!
I was a bit bummed to hear the Noisemakers weren’t going to make it … maybe that’s why the tickets are cheaper? Oh well, another solo show will be great!

But will Ricky and Bruce appear on a night that also features Triumph the Insult Comic Dog or the Masturbating Bear? That is the question…

If you like to sit close, you’d better order your tickets by phone. Closest I could get online was Row N, but David said he got front row by calling the auditorium.
And yes, tickets are $21 for floor and $18 for balcony — very reasonable!
Where’s the meetup and hotel headquarters, DD? Hope to get to meet all these great new contributors to the site at Boone!

ParticipantPimpitudiness of DD
Now Lola, don’t make me announce before God and everyone that you and I shared a cozy corner booth at the Lucky Strike before the big Louisville meetup! Seems my P-‘n’-T lessons are working out quite well. 😯 ❗
Doesn’t “Pimp of Blabbery” sound like some sort of title of the English nobility? Can’t you just see Queen Liz, scepter in hand, standing before DD, his head bowed, he on one knee before her as she touches each shoulder— ?
“I hereby proclaim you ‘Pimp of Blabbery,’ Big Pimp and Chief Blabberer to all in the land of Brucedom.”
Maybe Si can arrange something… 😆

ParticipantGreat news!
I’ve been hoping for this! Wonder if they’ll play the “Freak”? You know that’s a definite. Hope they give them time to add a second number also. I’m a big “Conesy” fan.
By the way, my clock-radio woke me up Sunday to a syndicated radio show that was playing “Super Freak.” I forget the name of the show — I think it was an all-acoustic hour or something — but they were doing an “All Covers” show. The DJ gave the record a plug and seemed amused by “Freak.”

That’s GOLD, Allisa! Gold, I tells ya!
Thanks.

Per China Doll, let me revise that earlier recommendation:
Double-D is the PIMP of Blabbery.

Congrats on your milestone, Mr. David Day!!! I recommend “Czar of Blabbery” for you! 😆
It’s going to be interesting to see if Bruce can bring jazz to a wider audience. You know, John Mayer did his jazz trio thing recently — I’m not sure to how much acclaim. It will be an education for me, since I know so little about jazz. I’ll definitely do some research, thanks to Bruce making this record.
I’m interested to see what Bruce does next, after delving intensely in Bluegrass/Jazz/Broadway. What are his plans after those projects? How will he fuse together what he has learned during this process? Should be interesting. I hope it’s a pop-influenced melding of all those influences — taking him to a new, all-time-high peak!
I’d like to see him produce a fluid, traditional “Bruce”-sounding album of all-new material with a united theme using all these influences he’s mined in the past few years.

ParticipantRicky and Bruce
Got mine last weekend after ordering through Amazon via this site. I thoroughly enjoyed it from first listen. It seems to be a nice, impartial collaboration — equal parts Ricky and Bruce — though, of course, I prefer the Bruce bits, like Gulf of Mexico Fishing Boat Blues.
Ricky’s voice is soooo countryfied, it took some time for me to get used to his style. I also prefer a more modern Bluegrass sound in general… Nickel Creek, say. The instrumental, “Stubb,” was my favorite of Ricky’s material. I enjoyed the Irish influence of some of the sounds.
As people have said and the votes have indicated on Si’s poll, Mandolin Rain is the standout here — and I’m glad Crown of Jewels seems to be getting its due. I wasn’t as crazy about Night on the Town in this context as I thought I’d be, however. Obviously, Dreaded Spoon and Super Freak bookend the album with great fun and energy.
If anybody wants to send me an mp3 of The End of the Innocence and The Way It Is from Crossroads, that’d be great. I miss them on the album! They were such wonderful renditions — I hope Bruce will bring in a fiddle/violin sound more often in the future!!!

ParticipantAlways rises
I think the cream has risen to the top, David!
Ellen, that was a great game… though Tennessee’s first-round, 121-point performance against Long Beach State was less nerve-wracking! 😆
I’m not so sure the Vols can get past Ohio State, but they just might! 😮

ParticipantFinal Four
Gonzaga done GONE, Allisa!
Tennessee could go far … I could actually see two SEC teams in the Final Four, just like last year, but I picked a Kansas-Carolina final. We’ll see! Who knows?

Hey Allisa, where’s your contribution this time around?
Victor
ParticipantHahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Quote:For instance, he chided the audience for requesting him to play more Grateful Dead songs and his “hit songs,” advising them to “buy the album” or “go see a cover band.” Later, he ranted about the Grammy Awards.I love it! I ranted about the Grammy Awards right here on these boards myself. You’ve got to love Bruce’s cantankerousness…
These stuffed-shirt types at these industry shows are like frat boys on spring break. They think they own everybody on the beach — “EHX – The Electronic House Expo” — Too Cool for School! You almost have to use your “Movie Trailer Guy” voice when you say it. A bunch of door-to-door salesmen. Talk about pompous.
I don’t blame Bruce a bit for getting fed-up with these types now and again. At least they acknowledged he’s “very, very talented.”

Please ignore Mr. David Day. He is obviously off his meds again and having another senior moment!
Carry on. Nothing to see here. Move along.

ParticipantI don’t think LC was ever tied to the R&B album, Scott. It — along with The Trump Song and others — is a part of Bruce’s potential Broadway show, tentatively titled “Rich Bastid.”

bryandunn wrote:Hi all – the BruceHornsby.com site just got updated with the yet-to-be-released CD.That sounds great, Bryan, thanks! I do prefer Bruce’s voice stylings to Ricky’s, but it’s all good.
Ever since Bruce played Chattanooga in August 2005 and he and R.S. opened with a duet he called “musings on a Ricky & Bruce number,” I’ve wondered what piece that was. I think it might have been “Gulf of Mexico Fishing Boat Blues,” but I’m going to have to go back and give it another listen.
Personally, Bruce has hit a note that coincides with my own recent interest in bluegrass. It’s weird how Bruce has managed to do that for me over the years.

si_twining wrote:I think we’re approaching saturation level here, with what I call “palatable music” being swallowed whole by manufactured nonsense.I don’t know, Si. I’ve been finding some stuff I like in the alt/ indy / self-publishing realm. Of course almost none of this is getting any radio play, except on maybe NPR.
I’ve seen several people here are into acts like Lucinda Williams and Mary Gauthier, whose “Mercy Now” is great. I’ve mentioned Christine Kane — http://www.ChristineKane.com — on here before; she’s a great singer/songwriter/musician in Asheville.
And there’s a group of three sisters — ages something like 15, 18, and 21 — near where I work who were classically trained musicians who now have their own bluegrass band that just signed with Lyric Street, a Disney label in Nashville. Check the Lovell Sisters out at http://www.lovellsistersband.com. So, so talented. Could be the next Dixie Chicks/ Alison Kraus.

Participantcountrydoctor wrote:I was at the tv taping as well and I believe the song you’re thinking of was Mandolin Rain. I too was waiting on the applause at the end of the tv broadcast but instead it was just Skaggs saying “that’s beautiful, just beautiful”. I’m getting chills just thinking about it. Thank God for DVR.Yeah, I guess they did that for effect as much as anything.
