ParticipantALLISA!!! I knew I could coax you out of hibernation! Hope all is going well in Cd’A! Times are tough out there … except for those of us who were fabulously wealthy and good-looking before the recession!

ParticipantHaven’t gotten the soundtrack yet, but I did go ahead and download the movie. It was quite good. I do wish they’d handled Bruce’s cameo a little differently. I think it could have had more comedic impact. But I think the tone (SPOILER!) was turning more dramatic at that point, so they couldn’t play it for all it was worth.
Another SPOILER: I was glad to see my two favorite records get nice placement.

ParticipantI noticed the playlist is down to 2 songs. It must be a new technique to sell records: give them all the goodies, then take them away just before the album is released! Works for me. I’m having withdrawal already!

ParticipantGood-looking video!
Did they really ask JV if he plays anything besides bass??? As if that weren’t enough in itself! I liked the explanation as to how Bruce collaborated on “Cyclone.”
Two thumbs up!

ParticipantDavid, thanks again for your appreciation of my Pen Pic — my most popular piece of fiction yet!
How many people actually remember it was inspired by Global-Moderator-at-large Allisa-? I think poor little Allisa must be lost in the wilds of Coeur d’Alene.
And yes, my avatar — blond hair, blue eyes — is much closer to my true appearance than my Pen Pic. Here’s the first actual picture of me to ever appear on Bruuuce.com …
Are you ready for this??? …..

ParticipantRe: Boulder, CO etown taping
Dangit, Mary, you beat me to this posting by 30 minutes. Here’s my rememories:
Hey gang, I ran into Mary on the second row at the Boulder Theater last night, and she wrote down the set list; however, I think she’s in transit to Wisconsin (NOT Minnesota … ha! [inside joke]), so I’ll try to give a not-so-brief rundown.
Bruce opened the show with a solo “Black Rats” performance, followed by “Paperboy.” It’s always interesting to hear songs stripped-down for a solo (especially these new songs). Bruce then talked with E-Town host Nick Forster during the interview segment. At one point, Forster noted that the new record includes a “solo by a really great guitarist.” The way he worded it, I heard a couple people kinda gasp, thinking he was talking about R.S., … but he was referring to Clapton on “Space is the Place.”
Bruce noted that “Space” also includes (as a little birdie had told me earlier) a recording of Bruce’s (now 17-year-old sons) rapping when they were 11. Bruce said his son(s) are fans of 80s big-hair bands, which I thought was ironic because I was escaping those bands when I first became a Hornsby fan. Bruce said he does have a newfound respect for those bands, which he’d previously written off as “a music snob.”
They taked a bit about the program Bruce has endowed at the University of Miami; scoring the Kobe Bryant documentary; the musical, SCKBSTD, which still “doesn’t have an ending;” and the movie, “World’s Greatest Dad,” before Bruce and Forster, on mandolin, dueted on “Shadow Hand.” I always likes me some mandolin, and Forster did a super job, I thought.
Bruce teased “Low Country” after Forster talked about all the natural or scientific references on the new album. Bruce attributed that to reading the Science section in the Tuesday New York Times.
After several numbers by Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women (“Que Sera Sera,” several original songs, fun!) and an interesting interview with director Louie Psihoyos about his documentary of dolphin abuse off the coast of Taijii, Japan, in “The Cove,” (http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/thecove/) Bruce came back out for a dulcimer solo on “Prarie Dog Town” and “I Truly Understand,” which transitioned to the piano, followed by “A Night on the Town.”
So we got about six Bruce numbers over two or so hours … not bad! The finale was a “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”-style number with all the musicians playing and singing together. The name of the classic song is escaping me … anybody?
It was great to meet Mary on a really fun night. My only disappointment was not hearing “Cyclone,” “Continents,” or “Invisible,” but oh well. Next time. The show should air on your local NPR-ish radio station within 4 to 6 weeks. Check etown.org for specific times and dates or for the podcast.

ParticipantDavid, I am a member of the Branch “Davidians,” for sure!
I don’t know what your favorites may be, but in Boulder last night, Mary asked Bruce his favorite. He said he doesn’t have one yet, but the band’s favorite so far is “Here We Are Again.”
That’s one that’s still growing on me personally.

ParticipantHey Jeff,
I didn’t even know Amazon had movies available for download (I’m so old school)! I don’t have a problem with trying both the download and the theater preview in Denver–especially since your positive review supports others I’ve seen so far.
You’re right, movie downloads seem to be the wave of the future, but I will kinda miss that communal aspect of going to see a movie with a huge crowd of people, if it comes to that. 😥
And if Si makes a link to the Amazon download, I’ll see it that way if it helps the site.

Victor
ParticipantGood info, mmm. All the more reason to see the movie in the theater if you’re near one of those select locations! I guess I’ll be at the Chez Artiste on Sept. 4 …
How do they determine where they open these movies anyway??? It seems so random.
Vic
Victor
ParticipantOh … nice detective work, Highway! I bet you’re on the money.

ParticipantRe: VIDEO CLIPS FROM WORLDS GREATEST DAD
Guys, all this new dissemination of movies is great and all, but I think we all ought to head out to the theaters as well to show our support in the traditional way. Assuming it IS being released in the traditional sense … I would think filling the seats could help it get wider release-?

ParticipantAmazon is now showing the “World’s Greatest Dad” soundtrack available for preorder for $18.98, with a Sept. 1 ship date. It’s on Lakeshore Records, and an expanded track listing can be found here:

Looks like “Boo Radley” and “Song C” didn’t make it, but we get both live and studio versions of “Shadow Hand”–?
ALSO: Note the audio clip from Principal Anderson: “Thank you, Bruce Hornsby” — ??? 😮

ParticipantRe: VIDEO CLIPS FROM WORLDS GREATEST DAD
“Lance and Kyle Argue Over Music” is still my favorite clip from the movie, especially now that I know the song playing on the radio is “Invisible.” I can’t wait to see the movie in a few weeks. Kudos to Magnolia Pictures for picking it up.
I find it neat that the production company is Darko Entertainment. “Donnie Darko” is one mind-trip of a movie. The director (and “World’s Greatest Dad” producer) Richard Kelly, has also remade “The Box,” an old Twilight Zone episode and Richard Matheson short story, “Button, Button,” which Kelly has greatly expanded for the silver screen.
Should be interesting.

ParticipantSi, did Sonny and JV co-write Prarie Dog Town?
Victor
ParticipantI voted for “Great Work.” It’s an overall awesome sound, but I don’t know if Bruce will ever out-do his two-CD magnum opus, Spirit Trail. The work’s just so consistent throughout that double CD.
That said, there are some great individual songs on this record. I agree with the guy who told me it’s 75 percent WOW! and 25 percent WTF!??! I mean, who IS that rapping kid on Space Is the Place? But I’m sure those 3 or 4 songs that give me pause will grow on me. It will just take a little time to appreciate them.
Cyclone and Continents Drift are my two favorites so far. Continents is stuck in my head already. Low Country has been addictive since he started playing it live. Black Rats is joyous; heard it in Boulder a year ago and have missed it.
Did I hear a touch of Shawn Colvin or somebody in Invisible?

Participantmmm–Wish I could make Bay Days. It’s the weekend before my 20th high school reunion, but I probably won’t make that, either! 😡
Mary–I hope we get a chance to meet in Boulder! Unfortunately, we won’t have time to meet-up beforehand, since we’ll be rushing up and back for the Wednesday show. 😥
But the format should make for an interesting night — and, one or two Road Scholars could probably fit in our humble abode!
Who’s making the trip out West?
Vic
Victor
ParticipantWell said, mmm! I hate I missed Asheville. I’ve been to the Biltmore a few times, but I have yet to make it to a Bruce show there. Sounds like a fine time was had by all as usual at the Biltmo’. I’ll make it back there eventually…
I will try to get the scoop as to when this E-Town show will air/be available. We got tickets today, by the way, even though the Boulder Theatre web site says they won’t go on sale until tomorrow.
So anybody over there who wants to get a cheap Frontier Airlines flight out West for the show (which Road Scholars will it be-?!?
can order show tickets as of now!

ParticipantPretty jealous out here and beginning to wonder why I moved to Colorado … until I noticed Mr. Dunn’s latest post in the Tour Dates thread: “Wednesday, August 12, 2009 @ 7:00p.m. — E-Town w/ Bruce Hornsby in Boulder, Colorado.”
E-Town is a great show broadcast on NPR since 1991 and presented locally by 97.3 KBCO — one of the best radio stations out there. Their Web site details the event as a “live radio show taping hosted by Nick and Helen Forster featuring music and conversation with Bruce Hornsby and another musical guest to be announced.”
Too bad it’s a solo show, but general admission is only $20 bucks or so — good news to me!

ParticipantSweet. Nice cover art! Pencil drawing … that’s different.

ParticipantThat is interesting. I guess Sony didn’t last too long.
I checked out Verve’s web site, and it looks like it could be a good home for Bruce. It should definitely be able to give him more personal attention just because of the sheer number of talent at Sony versus this new label.
Here’s hoping it works out great!
