ParticipantWe appreciate the thought, Allisa! You’re not moving out of beautiful Cd’A, are you?
David: I thought Bruce playing with his legs crossed in Boone was pretty funny considering your recent “Schroeder from Peanuts” dream sequence.
He looked a lot like Schroeder when he did that!
Victor
ParticipantCan David or Jackie or hamsalad give us a run down?
Victor
ParticipantWow! A 5-Smiley review from David Day. Impressive!
One question: Just how many solo shows have you seen?
Victor
ParticipantGood points, boss:
Bruce’s workload increases at least fivefold during these solo piano shows. But he pulls it off fantastically. I’m just glad to be alive to see him perform; no one else can do these things. Has anyone EVER done what he’s doing? I’m no musician and have little musical knowledge, but when he played those “Camp Meeting” pieces, it was obvious even to me how difficult the jazz material is … his hands were ALL OVER those keys. Absolutely amazing to witness. And on band songs like Big Stick, his voice led the way above the piano.
ALSO: I ordered tickets online the day they became available, and I got Row N. If I’d called the theater box office, I could have gotten front row. Lesson learned. Having big fans scattered around the hall does make it difficult to get spontaneous applause generated audience-wide. It’s not an ideal system for Bruuuuuuuuce! fans.
Overall, though, I thought the crowd was very appreciative. The one guy (was that you, boss?) shouted “You’re a genius, Bruce!” which Bruce milked. The crowd cheered enough to receive what I saw as two encores. And did I mention the wonderful weather and how BEAUTIFUL it was there in the mountains?
Ah, “Iron Man” … Thanks for the clarification.
Victor
ParticipantBoone was a blast. Lola, you missed a good one. I just posted the set list and some other observations under the “Set Lists” banner.
David: Good to see you as always. You remain a Road Scholar and a gentleman. Sorry I lost you on the cell phone in the mountains. You’ll have to fill me in on the details later. Can’t wait to hear about Greensboro.
Carey: Hope you have a safe trip back to VA. Share some good photos with us if you can! You are the Scholar of Scholars.
MVF: What the Hell Happened?!? Didn’t see you or Country Doctor, for that matter. The crowd was great, though. A sellout for Bruce’s first appearance in Boone… “It only took me 21 years,” he said.
One highlight was getting two (and probably 3) requests played. It was the first time Bruce has played “Gulf of Mexico Fishin’ Boat Blues” solo. My arts & crafts projects paid off!
Thanks to Kendall for helping me.

ParticipantQuote:Can anyone name all 7 Road Scholars?Dopey, Grumpy, Doc, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy and Sleepy!
David: I’ll demonstrate my mad triangle skills for all the Scholars one day, but I will not be wearing one of my fine three-piece suits this weekend, since I’m roughing it at the Honey Bear. 😆

ParticipantDavid comes through once again with meetup plans! Way to go, David! Lola, sounds like you’re doing good work up there, so keep it up … but come to the Boone-ies if you can!
I’ll leave it up to MVF to take over for you!
Carey, hope to catch up at intermission if not before! Whatever happened to Country Doctor? He still around?
I might be a little late arriving — my girlfriend’s flying in from Colorado Friday night, so we’ll be driving-up on Saturday with a quick stop to visit family… This will be my girlfriend’s first-ever Bruuuce! show!!! I think she’ll be blown away. See you all then!

ParticipantDagnabit, David … What time do we meet?!?
I guess I’ll be there at about 6 p.m. unless somebody tells me otherwise…
Vic
Victor
ParticipantThanks for the recap, MVF! Wish I could have made it. See you in Boone!
Vic
Victor
ParticipantI would love to be there to meet Jackie and everybody, but I won’t be able to make it to Greensboro. Which I hate, because I’m sure Bruce will do something great that night!
Victor
ParticipantDavid,
What time should Global Moderators arrive at Cafe Portofino to sign autographs?
Vic
P.S. David Day for U.N. Secretary-General!
Victor
ParticipantTell us about it, MVF. Not only was I unable to make it there in person, I overslept and missed the show entirely. NOT good! How did it go?
Vic
Victor
ParticipantI just made my reservation at the Honey Bear Campground in Boone – $30 a night! It doesn’t get any sweeter than that!
Here’s a good link for campgrounds in the area for those of you who enjoy nature and/or are poor like me: http://www.mountaintimes.com/summer/campgrounds.php3.
Better hurry, though. They’re going fast! Hope to see a bunch of you guys at Cafe Portofino before the show!

ParticipantThanks Rich, thanks Allisa … Now we’re getting somewhere! The CBS will gladly work with the CPNP to find a resolution to these issues. Cordarounds are quite possibly the best idea to come down the trail since multigrain bread. Bruce would look just right in a pair of those hippie boots, wouldn’t he? However, Bruce might be most comfortable in running shoes as he runs around the country. But which running shoes should it be? Nike, Adidas, New Balance, ASICS, Brooks? Keds, Saucony, Puma? Mizuno, Reebok, Etonic? (This is starting to sound like a rap.) Bruce should write the “Shoe Song.”
I have been advised by the American Association of Podiatrics, but I would like to hear input on this subject from longtime runner David Day…
Victor
ParticipantInteresting sound… it’s going to take a listen or three before these ears can get used to that sound. But I’m sure I’ll get into it; I enjoyed the Marilyn McPartland jazz piano CD. It will be a great learning experience. I’m sure Bruce will educate me once again as he has so many times along his musical path.
Victor
ParticipantFinally — Si — someone who understands the enormous (pun intended) implications of this enterprise. Yeah, Bruce probably has at least size 12s going on there, but that does not deter the CBS in its intended purpose! I have already performed some research at the local Jim’s Slack Shack, which has the best Big & Tall department in town. Jim suggests a nice penny loafer in black — light and comfy, but resilient enough for Bruce to feel the pedals as he works his magic in concert.
Comments or suggestions?
Happy Independence Day, Uh-mer-uh-ca!

ParticipantMVF,
Alas, I’m afraid I’m going to have to postpone our meeting until another day. Real life has reared its ugly head, and I’m not going to be able to get off work in time to be in Raleigh, which is quite a drive from here.
I’m going to have to watch the CBS Morning Show on TV like everybody else. At least we’ll have Boone in a couple weeks.
Victor
ParticipantC’mon … 50 views and no comments on this engaging subject? Not even from David Day?!?!
Who wants to play?

ParticipantSeems my interpretation has been vindicated by a story from a local entertainment magazine! Thanks for finding it, Dana. This thread does bring up an interesting question about some of the lyrics in Halcyon Days. Upon first listening, I was somewhat drawn out of several songs because of some of the word choice. Some of the vocabulary just seemed … how should I put it? … inconsequential. Songs about “drooling,” “crochet” and the like just seemed so unlike what Bruce had written about in the past.
I still sometimes wonder if the lyrics hold up to the music on that record. Such word choice seemed more appropriate and to fit better on “Big Swing Face.” Was anyone else somewhat taken aback by the lyrical choices?

ParticipantJV stole Jim Cloffington’s woman! 😮

ParticipantMVF, I think I should add a caveat to your post for the latecomers to the board:
Since I met Lola at the Lucky Strike bowling alley in Louisville last year, she has been my exclusively contracted ball handler.
You, however, are allowed to challenge our legal agreement through a tryout process in Raleigh!
David, I think you need to get your priorities straight, or I’ll have to take over as the official “decider” of what constitutes a true “Road Scholar!”

June 22, 2007 at 5:36 pm in reply to: Has anyone ever gotten to party with Bruce? Curious Question #28799Victor
ParticipantI agree with Megan. It’s been my understanding that if you e-mail Bruce’s management at the address from the official site with a worthy request, you may get some sort of official backstage pass. Obviously it’s not guaranteed, but it’s worth a shot. I met Bruce in Chattanooga by hanging out between his bus and the backstage door. It took a while for Bruce to come out (after taking a break and a shower, I presume), but that gave me time to meet the band. I also met him after the CMT Crossroads taping just by walking up to stage left afterwards.
Neither time did I get emotional, but I did kind of stammer because I’ve admired Bruce’s work and him as a person for so many years. Even though I’ve met a lot of “important” people over the years, I did get a bit tongue-tied around Bruce.
He was very nice both times.

ParticipantFriday, July 13 is less than a month away now. So who’s planning on being in Raleigh? We should do brunch after the Early Show!
Victor
ParticipantAh, yes, David Day. But Confucious say: at some point, student must surpass the mentor!
David – Are you still planning to go to Raleigh? E-mail or PM me.
Victor
ParticipantYou know, I didn’t realize this was going to be entirely instrumental. Not necessarily a good or bad thing. Just a fact I didn’t know… Dave R., interesting to get a musician’s dissenting opinion on the intricacies of jazz, especially the part about its accessibility.
