The FLAC option might be worth it as a “future-proof” option, in that in the future you may choose to do your listening on equipment with high enough fidelity to reveal the difference.

With “sport” headphones, depending on exactly what that means, I’d be surprised if you can tell much difference especially if the live downloads folks did a decent job on the encoding (MP3 has come a ways since the 128 kbps napster dreck that permanently turned off many folks). And for that matter, your iPod will not be able to play the FLAC’s directly, although it is easy to use a program like Scott Brown’s xAct to transcode them into Apple Lossless (full fidelity) or MP3/AAC (possibly better suited to portable use) to work with your iPod. Shoot me a PM if you need help with that.

Re: An Interesting Review About The Recent Salt Lake City Sh

Errr… “discomfiting” is a real word. Means something like embarrassing. Seems used properly if you accept the writer’s contention that the crowd enjoyed the covers more than the original tunes.

Last paragraph makes sense to me as well. The writer is suggesting that the highlight of the encore (likely Little Maggie, itself a cover) was including within it another cover song. He is suggesting that this is an impressive display of musicianship, but in his mind it does not reflect well on the performers that the highlight of their show is a cover tune. I may not 100% agree, but it makes sense to me.

Maybe they cleaned up the article since originally posted, but I don’t see any misspellings.

I don’t agree 100% with the review, but “Anonymous” really needs to take a deep breath and think before posting in the comments. Might not be a bad idea for some folks here either, the reaction to DMBtex’s post seemed more than a little out of line to me. Different folks have different favorite bands and different taste in music. So be it.

How much are you willing to spend and how fast do you need the gear? Are you looking for an all-in-one mics+recorder in a single unit? This may seem handy, but will offer compromised sound quality as the built in mics are usually nothing to write home about, plus it’s hard to position the recorder where the sound is best. Or are you willing to deal with separate mics + recorder? Do you want/plan to use a stand, clamp a boom arm to your armrest, or wear the mics on your body?

Best Buy is probably not the best place for what you need.

As with anything, you largely get what you pay for, although you do eventually reach a point of diminishing returns.

Don’t know if it’s directly related to this, but if I type http://bruuuce.com into my browser (ie not going directly to the board, or to the new co.uk site) it redirects me to a site that tries to fool me into installing a trojan horse.

Looks like a good time but 90 minute shows? Kind of relieved I wasn’t able to make the trip.

Most likely. The setlist doesn’t seem to vary much from night to night anyway.

But I should point out, I distinctly remember seeing preprinted setlists on stage at a couple Noisemakers shows, but they were not followed to the letter. And this *may* have only been the Villa Montalvo shows in ’02 that were being filmed, where they probably had to give the crew a heads up on what to expect.

I’m kind of thinking of a trek up to Oregon. Nice road trip if nothing else.

But, the fact that it’s sort of a one-off (ok, a “two-off”) at a casino has me a little worried. I’m still thinking about the last show the Noisemakers did at a casino, outside of a real tour:

02/01/07 Harrah’s Rincon Casino – Valley Center, CA
Carry the Water, Circus on the Moon, Mandolin Rain, Gonna Be Some Changes Made, White-Wheeled Limousine, End of the Innocence, Super Freak, Jacob’s Ladder >Pig in a Pen > Jacob’s Ladder, The Way It Is
    Encore: Valley Road
    Comments: Noisemakers show

I just can’t get that excited about the prospect of a one hour show. Anyone know for sure if the Oregon shows will be any longer?

I know we’re not supposed to post unofficial dates so I’ll just say, without naming specific sites or dates, pollstar is already showing dates in August and October – with Ricky Skaggs. Doesn’t look good for a return to full-time Noisemaking any time soon. :(

I’ve got the 9/22/02 show in my iTunes collection as 192 kbps AAC files. It would be easy enough for me to upload these to my website if you want.

That means I should have the lossless files and CDs somewhere, but I’m not sure where. I pretty much gave away my CDs of every show I didn’t actually attend and was counting on bigrr’s ftp site as my primary repository for lossless files.

“frreemind” posted the following to the norcal etree mailing list:

I went, saw Eric, Jubilee, and John Hoey there, and I enjoyed it
greatly. Bruce was so jazzed, so to speak, to be playing with such
top-flight players in the form of Christian McBride and Jack
DeJohnette. Hornsby himself is a powerful and distinctive jazz
pianist. The program consisted mostly of fractured versions of jazz
standards, such as Monk’s Straight No Chaser and Miles Davis’s Solar.
Bruce did throw in three of his “hits”, Long Tall Cool One, Talk of
the Town (with DeJohnette handling some of the vocals), and for the
final encore, Mandolin Rain, played solo. Hornsby had earlier teased
that requested song with a jazzified version of the chorus. There was
talk of something special, and that appeared as the first encore in
the form of Bonnie Raitt. She sang Hey There, a song from the musical
The Pajama Game, associated with her father, the late John Raitt.

The show was about 100-105 minutes long, and the Palace of Fine Arts
was close to full but not quite. I was able to find a ticket out front
for a little bit of a bargain.

So, somewhat encouraging post in Bruce’s guestbook posted 7/10/07:

    Bruce’s Reply:
We tape them, and if they are really strong we release them for sale through Munck Music. The ban on taping is not permanent. Ricky Skaggs & company do not allow taping, for one thing. Thanks for being interested.

At the same time, fairly heartbreaking post (at least to me) just below it:

“Date: 06-25-2007 12:21:30 PM Posted by: Carol Supan
Dear Bruce, First off, thank you so much for all the great music. We were fortunate to see you at the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts in February. We brought our daughter, Lindsey, who LOVES all kinds of music with us. She’s a BIG FAN of Bonnie Raitt, so she was thrilled looking at the book from your DVD set (AND THANK YOU FOR THAT, WHAT A BONUS!)and seeing pictures of you and Bonnie. Then when she looked up, here comes Bonnie Raitt sitting 5 rows in front of us. Honestly, I don’t know if she was watching you or Bonnie more. Please don’t take offense, Lindsey is autistic, so we are excited when she finds something she likes. Anyway, Lindsey and her dad will see you at the Mountain Winery tomorrow night. Lindsey fell in love with you in S.F. She carries around the book from your DVD set (it’s in pieces, but she keeps taping it together) and your her choice for music in the car and at home. If you get this before the concert, her favorite song is ‘Sticks & Stones’ so hopefully it’s in your set. Take care! Carol, Larry and Lindsey Supan

    Bruce’s Reply:
Make sure to write your request on paper and get it up to the stage so we can see it. Saratoga is sure to be fun!”

“sure to be fun” was likely Bruce hinting that Bonnie Raitt would in fact join them for three songs that night! Now,
I realize that having Ricky Skaggs and co. complicates things and takes some things out of Bruce’s hands, but wouldn’t it be great if someone could have taped this show and shared it with Lindsey? It’s because of possible situations like these that I hope the ban is lifted ASAP after the tour with Skaggs.

This is the kind of situation I was really trying to describe with my “show for the ages” comment earlier in this thread – a show may not rise to the artistic standards necessary for it to get out as a munckmusic release, but it still might be VERY special to some in attendance.

I also feel like I’m going through Noisemakers withdrawal. Those shows do have something that the solo shows, and the bluegrass shows, don’t. I miss the interaction between the guys who know each other so well, and everything JV does, and the free-flowing nature where pretty much any song might be next.

But the Hornsby and Skaggs show I saw was great, no question. I have to admit I was a little worried when I realized the first set was proceeding EXACTLY as reported by Allissa for a few nights before, but the playing by all involved was top notch. It was great to hear Bruce playing on songs I’d never heard live before, many of which just wouldn’t work in the Noisemakers context. And the second set seemed to be a little looser, with a few unscripted surprises thrown in.

But I hope I can see a show with JV before too long. 8)

There do seem to be MORE solo shows lately, but I first attended a solo show in 1998, have a tape of a solo show from 1994, and believe there is one from 1992 out there.

Tapes from before Bruce’s time with the Dead defintitely circulate, although I don’t know if taping was officially condoned back then. Certainly it was well established before the Other Ones.

There are certainly more tapes from 93 on, but then again Bruce had a much more varied repertoire by that point and individual shows were more different from each other, providing more incentive to keep more than just the very best recordings circulating.

I am also sorry if I came across as implying that we as fans are entitled to tape, or that it shows a lack of appreciation for that privilege to be withdrawn. It was nice while it lasted, hopefully it will be back again.

This seems to be turning into a glass half full / glass half empty discussion that may not be worth pursuing further. But:

I’m not saying that not allowing taping shows a lack of appreciation for fans, but surey allowing taping shows an extra degree of appreciation?

Bruce is not the only talented artist out there. When choosing which artists to partonize, should we not consider the entire package each has to offer? If there are two or more shows at the same time, I can only go to one…And I will consider the full package whenever deciding between confliciting shows on the same date, or when choosing how to allocate my seasonal ticket budget. That is all.

Hmmm….I’m quite sure the rumored show I now plan to skip will sell out regardless. I’ll still see a couple of his other shows. No skin off anyone’s back.

That said, while allowing taping was indeed a gift to the fans it was one that IMO enhances the band-fan relationship, take that away and maybe I’d rather see a different band of awesomely talented, original musicians who also appreciate their fans enough to allow that gift.

If band A offers me a great night of original music with the potential to be a show for the ages, and band B offers me a great night of original music with the potential to be a show for the ages and allows me to take home a permanent record of that night, I’ll go with band B.

I’m sure part of this dynamic is that small bands can really use the free exposure whereas Bruce is now at a point where he really doesn’t need it. Still, what’s the harm? If he doesn’t want to look out in the crowd and see mic stands (or have to worry about people setting up stands in the wrong places), just institute a no-stands rule but don’t make it a problem to tape unobtrusively. Works for acts as big as Mark Knopfler and Pearl Jam, among others.

Maybe I was just struck by the irony of this announcement coming hot on the heels of Daily Dose day.
