ParticipantDon J wrote:I heard Bruce in 2004 in Cary, NC with Branford M. I could not hear Branford then. I thought the sound was much better in Chattanooga, still the bass and drums were to loud. Same for Knoxville, except the organ could not be heard. I state again, the sound needs to be improved for me to attend again. I have heard him outside twice and inside twice, and sound was subpar 3 of the 4 times. I compare that to concerts of Pat Metheny, Sting, Steely Dan, among others where it was excellent. It’s not my intention to argue about what you did or didn’t hear, or whether you should be happy with it, but rather to suggest that you may be able to attain a more pleasing balance in the sound through careful selection of your seats. If you do not like a mix that is heavy on the bass and drums, I would recommend against sitting very close to the stage and suggest that you will find the mix more pleasing sitting further back.
Now, I don’t know where you sat at these shows nor do I know what you heard. However, I do know that I have a tape of the Cary show with Branford Marsalis and on the tape his sax comes through at an entirely appropriate volume relative to the other instruments. So in at least part of the venue, he should have been plenty audible. I’m sorry to hear that wasn’t the case where you were sitting.

ParticipantHmm, the “too loud” complaint seems atypical for a Bruce show, most I have seen have been at a pretty moderate volume, all things considered. Might be a venue-specific thing.
Also, where were you sitting? Were you by any chance up really close to the stage, on the right side?
Keep in mind that the instruments vary in their “stage volume”. Drums and bass (since the bass amp is on stage next to JV) will of course be the loudest. JT you can pretty much only hear through the PA, since an electronic keyboard really doesn’t make any sound of its own. So if you sit very close to the stage, you have to be aware that you are sacrificing the proper mix between PA and stage volume, and the mix you hear will suffer as a result. It’s the price you pay for a great view. I suspect you may have been happier with the sound further from the stage.
Of course, if you were seated reasonably far back, I don’t know what the explanation might be other than a bad mix in that venue that night…it happens.

ParticipantI managed to record the streaming audio, PM me if you want a copy.
Seems like what actually got webcast was a mishmash of material from Kalamazoo and St Louis though.

ParticipantWow, these shows were cool enough to start with but when you add on the Box Set promo:
https://bruuuce.com/intersect-promo.htm
Some of these become just an incredible value. $35 to see Bruce solo in a small theater (Aladdin in Portland OR) AND a copy of the box set taboot? Even though I already have one, wow, what a deal.
Hoping there’s a SF date added but I may well head up to Portland…
Will_S
ParticipantI’d recommend contacting the venue directly. Oftentimes “no recording” ends up on the tickets as bolierplate but they won’t mind you taping a taping-friendly show. Sometimes not though.
Know anyone with some AT853s or DPA 4061s you can borrow?

ParticipantIt’s coming, one way or another.
That’s my recording that’s been showing up for the doses.
Unfortunately, I had some problems with my setup during most of the second set, so I don’t yet have a full recording to post to etree.
I am in touch with another person who taped the show, waiting to hear back from him. Hopefully I’ll be getting a copy from him and then will be able to post either his entire recording or a mix of mine and his, depending…
Could take a while though. I’ve got two more shows to hit next week.

ParticipantInteresting read.
Funny coincidence that he mentions wanting to do a collaboration with Mark Knopfler, and on the same day you posted this, I saw Knopfler in concert with Emmylou Harris (http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-deta … ?id=102039 for any DIME users who are interested).
It was a good show, but it’s hard to imagine the two collaborating live (in the studio, though, it could make something great). Knopfler is amazingly talented but is a stickler for tightly rehearsed shows – he plays more or less the exact same setlist (give or take a couple fixed songs depending on the total time available) for every show on a tour. Given how Bruce chafed at the Dead shows for being too strucutred, it’s pretty much impossible for me to envision them touring together. And it’s hard to imagine Mark opening up a show enough to have Bruce sit in for a song or two, or feeling comfortable just dropping in for a song or two with Bruce without rehearsing first.
Of course, I’d love to be proven wrong.

Hey Will, any word on the torrent? I haven’t seen it on etree… or is a copy of the show somewhere else like Rick’s server?
I’m not aware of him posting it anywhere yet. He mentioned planning to tape it on a tapers’ board I frequent, and I asked him later and he confirmed that he had taped it and planned to torrent it. Usually, folks on that board announce their torrents there when they’re up, so I doubt it’s up yet.
Especially because shortly before the show, his house got broken into. He didn’t lose much, but I’m sure he’s a little busy dealing with the followup to that. And with that background I don’t intend to pester him.

ParticipantThat’s funny because out of all the Hornsby and Kimock shows EVER, 10/4/02 is the only one I haven’t been able to find on tape. That might be all the more reason to convince Bruce to release it.

9/2/05 – Gilford, NHNow available at http://www.brucehornsbylive.com.
I can’t speak for the other two dates, but Chattanooga is a great mix of solo and band, classic Bruce and new Bruce.
Unfortunately, the “Musings on a Ricky+Bruce number” with R.S. Hornsby seems to be missing — I guess they’re keeping it under wraps for now.
Actually, since they list Night on the Town as 14:30 it does include “Musings”, they just decided not to mark it as a distinct track.
9/13/04 is also a new release. 9/2/05 has been out for a while, but 7/29/05 Portland is another new one.
All 4 are complete to the best of my knowledge. 7/31/05 is nice too, a fairly uncommon Every Little Kiss and an interesting alternate take on Valley Road.

I have some pics and VERY short videos from the show but I don’t know how to put them on here and they looked horrible on youtube. Any suggestions? Also, anyone know for sure whether that show was or wasn’t taped? By the way, Bruce incorporated my friend into the encore!!! Can’t wait for ChastainIf they are no bigger than a couple hundred megabytes, I can host them for you for a while. PM me to work out details.
Did you see any mic stands (in the audience) at the show? That’s one way to know for sure there’s a tape out there, although just because you didn’t see anyone taping doesn’t mean no one taped.
I know of one person planning to tape the Atlanta show but I don’t yet know if he actually did or how he’ll be circulating it.
Will_S
ParticipantThere are no circulating audience recordings that I know of.
But keep an eye on http://www.brucehornsbylive.com – I don’t know the specifics of the release date but a little birdie told me it’s coming.
Well worth buying when it comes out.

The comments come after Fortunate Son and before King of the Hill. If you have the version I treed on r.m.a.b-h / etree, it’s at the start of the King of the Hill track.

I mentioned it to him in jest last summer and he was surprisingly receptive!Well, he did actually play the full version in Redding last year. And he did have to look up the lyrics in a book he just happened to have with him. 😆

The Old Playground
Every Little Kiss(only a couple times in the past 4 years)I heard/read an interview somewhere in which Bruce said he doesn’t really feel like playing Every Little Kiss any more. Old Playground did get a tease last year, I think 8/21/05. I’d love to hear any of those three this summer though. Also Passing Through, which got played 7/24/05 but otherwise has been pretty much out of the rotation.

ParticipantFor studio albums and soundboards I generally prefer no EQ at all, sometimes bass boost if it’s a bass-shy soundboard. Well recorded audience tapes I also usually prefer no EQ, but I find bass reducer good for boomy audience tapes, bass booster good for tinny sounding tapes, and spoken word good for boosting the clarity of muddy sounding tapes.
Most of the other presets seem to have no rhyme or reason in the frequencies they boost or cut, just a haphazard mess of settings picked because someone thought they might look good on the display. Useless IMO.
